    I was 16 years old and it was the best gig of my life. What a spectacle the bottle throwing was, best of times.

      @Rene Otten In those days we were allowed to take our own alcohol into the arena as long as they were in plastic bottles. Later on in the day when everyone was pissed drunk we started to throw the discarded bottles that were lying around on the floor. Some still had beer left in them and some had urine in them. We were so pissed drunk we didn't care. I've never seen so many bottle being launched into the air at the same time. It was just hilarious trying to dodge them on the way back down so that we didn't get soaked in piss. You had to be there to witness it.

      Why did people throw bottles?

    I fought, pushed and persevered my way to the very front of that gig. I left after Van Halen because there was only one band for me (nothing has changed after all these years!). I turned my back on the stage and pushed my way back out before Angus even took the stage. At the time, I just wasn’t interested. Looking back now, sure, I regret not sticking around. I had many AC/DC albums. Oh well. I still have and regularly wear my Van Halen 1984 t-shirt. I saw VH 4 times. The other 3 were in LA when I lived out there for 10 years. I even got to meet Eddie :)

      They were throwing plastic 2Liter bottles with about 1/4 cider inside nailing people. It was ok until bottles were flying everywhere. They warned the crowd and they calmed down. I was in USAF at RAF Lakenheath working my ass off. Was a great concert.

    I was there but cant remember much about Accept, Motley Crue or Y&T, however Gary Moore was legendary. Van Halen were too much for me, too long guitar solos and Dave Lee Roths jokes!? I was there for Ozzy & AC/DC who were amazing, I'd seen them both previously at the Apollo in Glasgow. It was the year before I joined the RAF and I was only 16 still at school and travelled down on a bus with my mate big Jim Harvey from Auchinleck in Ayrshire Scotland I remember it took ages. I can still see the flying bottles of piss and the shit Tommy Vance got was hilarious. Still cat see myself in the crowd though!

      I remember the 2liter bottles partially full of cider nailing people. I was in USAF and at RAF Lakenheath. Great show.

    I was 17 and my mate and I got the boat over from Dublin and hitched to Donnington. The best festival I've ever been at. I watch some of the video of that day that appears on yootoobs now and I dont remember the bands sounding that rough lol. On the day I was just blown away by the level of huge bands on display. I remember the sky being literally filled with bottles at one point! Guy beside us got one right in the head and it had the cap off and was full of p*ss. He went berserk and pushed off through the crowd looking for the culprit, a proverbial needle in a haystack... man, on a day of guitar legends (Gary Moore, Jake E Lee and Angus Young) Eddie Van Halen showed why he was and is the GOAT. On the day Jake for me was a close second.

    This is special. I remember sitting on that lawn most of the day, as the crowd eventually necessitated standing up, by late afternoon most of us were pissing straight down.

    First saw them at the NEC in Birmingham in '82 and was at this gig. Possibly the only gig Johno has done without his hat? Never seen him without one in any point in time since he joined them.

    Remember this well on Whistle Test. Recorded it on VHS and watched it over and over. I never saw Van Halen, In ‘84 were just something else, just out there- Coolest Rock t-shirts for the time too.
    I got into a lot of different types of music (it was the eighties- loved the ‘anti rock’ Johnny Marr, just like Andy K who’s taking the Mick here - turns out JM is a huge Rory Gallagher fan)... but playing 1984 in the gym last month- reminded me of this again- Hot For Teacher on the Friday Rock Show! WT! Tommy V sayin it was VH after the ‘Oh My God’ by DLR. straight down to John Menzies to purchase in the morning. Thanks Tommy. Thanks Eddie. Yours Aye.

      @Murph Murphy
      Glad to know I’m not alone haha! The promos of Frankie etc and This Charming Man getting played by a real good shop owner at the time. I was in there alone snd was taken with that guitar intro, the name and the style of the sleeves. Tribalism and loyalty perhaps made it a guilty pleasure and I never went to see them because they became popular and quite a few Neds went, wearing Paisley shirts! Doh!

    • Murph Murphy
      Murph Murphy Рік тому +2

      In the 80s in my estate in Dublin the Metalheads would listen to the Smiths and other stuff too, anything which wasn't mainstream....although things seemed quite tribal for the times I remember many young people being open minded. I still love my Metal but I listen to lots of different music, and I still love The Smiths too.

      It's been worse luckily the weather was perfect on that day and the sound system up to a good standard. Also the stage is positioned in a natural 'dip' so good view for most people.
