Nah, Goku was already a prodigy in everything, not to mention he had a monkey tail, super force, near immunity to bullets and could transform in a giant monkey. Also, it was more and adventure manga with comical and martial arts elements than a battle one. But if your point it that it was far more (literally)down to earth, yeah, youre right in that part.

I’m watching it for the first time in preparation to re-watching DBZ (as DBZ Kai) and then DBS (haven’t seen it yet, but I like what I’ve seen on YT). I’m sorry, but I don’t see the appeal. It’s so simple and drawn out. I’m at the Baba / Gohan part, and it’s been a struggle since Mercenary Tao. He was an interesting threat, at least until it fell into the recurring trope: 1. Goku meets new enemy, is innocently confused 2. New enemy arrogantly faces Goku 3. Goku goofs off and hands the enemy their butt 4. Enemy stares in stunned bafflement, says “no… it’s not possible!” Five times 5. Enemy dies by their own doing because they didn’t walk away when beaten

Yeah a lot of us in the west grew up on Dragon Ball Z and saw Roshi as this old hermit on the beach, so we never thought he did much, and couldn't understand why he was called "Master"... then the original Dragon ball set us straight (and Super reminded us why he's still MASTER Roshi)
In Dragon Ball this was the first time he had ever taken off his shell so this was the first time if you were paying closely that the shell made a large crashing sound on the ground. This was the hint that he was hiding something. And then when he did the time nobody expected it. But then they just told you how a lot of people didn't really put that 2 and 2 together until much later. Of course if you watch Dragon Ball after Dragon Ball Z you catch this right away. I'm actually watching the original Dragon Ball and right now so these things are fresh in my mind

I like how unimpressed Roshi is with his time. He just remarks that it's not too bad, almost implying that he has done better before and/or has seen better while not elaborating on such. The humility of that legend is one of the reasons Goku grew up to be a kind person at heart

The interesting thing about DB was it was simple and about story and progression by real training. It seems that it wasn't about the weights but the resistance it provides. Making you feel restrained until you no longer feel it.
