    He is too cute. He wanted to run on the beach. Perhaps you should find a space where he can run freely more often.

      Marie Slabbert yeah we really wanted to let him off but decided it wasn’t a sensible idea as there was a lot of people and other dogs around. We sometimes take him to a training field to run around which I’ll be posting a video of soon.

    You can always use a long line whilst still working on recall we do this with our 6 months old GSD. When he was much younger we had him fully off lead as he was clingy but now he feels more independent so we'd rather be safe especially as we have a big breed. The long line can just trail on the floor you don't need to hold it and it means you can get control back in the case of an emergency until they're past adolescence and have iron glad recall. Ignore any Internet experts and do things at the pace that best suits your pup you know him best. Also ours use to have awful car sickness and now he only does on really windy roads thankfully!

      Thank you for the kind comment. As it happens we have currently resorted to long lead training now and as you've already mentioned the freedom makes him more well behaved. It also helps the recall as the way we do it is to let him have his distance (the max length of the lead) and try to encourage him to come to us without having to give him an encouraging tug. he sometimes runs circles around me which gives him a chance to burn some energy almost naturally.

    You are doing a great job with your whippet. It's not easy with a sighthound to let them run free but you have a great balance there. I get really uptight about letting mine off the lead because there is so much wildlife around where I live. Luckily I have a field which is totally fenced off.
    With the car and travelling, I had my whippet on the front passenger seat for while in a mini dog seat until he got used to the movement. Once he had, we put him in the back of the car and all is well.

    Whippies are not that good at recall, being sight hounds, noticing everything. Not good dogs off lead, unless they have some recall and it's not busy and is safe. Run or walk in the opposite direction telling them to "come this way" if he won't come back, which usually causes whippies to run to you. They get over excited and just run like nuts. They decide what's in it for them, haha. They spin, bottom down when they want to pay or run in excitement. Very loving, dignified dogs that love beds. We love Whippies, He's a lovely boy!

    Jasper is gorgeous, the way he was on the lead as you entered the beach (all skippy and doing 360's) is exactly how my whippet was. she is 11 months now and has been off the lead since she was 5 months, i was so nervous letting her off for the first time but took a squeaky toy and treats with me, the squeaky toy worked wonders. you can buy the squeakers on there own so i leave them in all my dog walking jackets now. that would be my biggest advice when letting Jasper of the lead, a squeaker toy,

    • @skatepark02
      @skatepark02  5 років тому

      Colin Morgan MTB sorry for the late reply. It’s been very tricky to get him used to being off the lead as we don’t have a garden and there aren’t any enclosed spaces very close by. He has been let off a few times on our country walk and he has been great! However lately he’s started to lose his recall training for some reason. I never seems to be interested in treats or anything else when he’s outside but I really like your squeaker idea. He’s destroyed so many toys (as I’m sure yours have) and I’ve kept some of the squeakers so I will have a go at using them. Thanks for the advice :)

      @@skatepark02Yep must be hard not having a garden, i'm no expert but try a chopped up sausage as a treats, smelliest you can find. you know the type? Northern already cooked from the supermarket that make your fingers smell :) they love it. They make great pets and i'm sure he will crack it. if you ever need advise whippets UK Facebook is a good place to start. good luck look forward to a video of Jasper on a good run off the lead.

    Our whippet loves to run! We've treat trained him to respond to the word "come" plus a hand signal, and a whistle that all mean the same thing..."come on back". I can call him out of a group of dogs or from the far side of a foot ball field. He's only on leash in high traffic areas. I hope Jasper gets the freedom to run sometime...it's what they're built for and it's a joy to watch.😄 Finnigan comes to work with me 3 days a week...basically he goes every where with us. He's an "adventure dog"...you should check out Stormi Dennis's training video's. Cheers from one Canadian whippet!

    • @skatepark02
      @skatepark02  5 років тому

      Susan Welden I wish ours was like that. Believe me we have put soooo much time and effort into training him but when he’s outside he has no interest at all in treats. He’s very ignorant at times and not having a garden means Being out in general is still a novelty to him. It’s tough.

    Have you tried natural car sickness tablets for him? another thing I would try is not letting him move around or look out the window when he is in the car, if he fits put him in the footwell and keep him there. looking out the window normally makes sickness worse

      @@skatepark02 Lee, I am sorry I forgot to mention this. As a long time dog owner (including greyhounds!) - some dogs just never do well in the car. Two things help: first, get one of the high seats for dogs, and you put him in that so he is high enough to look out. Keeps them from getting ill. Keep fresh air coming in the window. PLUS (I'm a licensed veterinary nurse btw) give him a little Benadry (Diphenhydramine) about 20-30 minutes before you leave in the car. The canine dose is 2-4 milligrams per kilo of the dog's body weight, up to 3 x daily. If he is about 12 kg, you would be looking at a dose of between 25-45 mg at a time. (Note: this IS indeed higher than a human dose; barring other health issues, dogs do quite well with it. They don't even get drowsy.) Benadry helps with motion sickness / allegies like to grass or insect bites / and mild sedation for a stress situation. I just wrap it up in a little bread and pop it right in their mouths.

      He hasn’t had a hearing test but he does respond to things very well most of the time. It seems to be more of a case of selective hearing and general ignorance at times. We’ll get the vet have a look on his next check up though, thanks for the tip.

    Having that chicken in front of him is not a great idea, Whippets are great with other pets other than smaller things like bunnies/rabbits/mice and I can only imagine chickens as well. They’re bred to chase and kill small animals, him seeing that chicken probably was invoking his primal respond to chase and/or kill.

    • @skatepark02
      @skatepark02  3 роки тому

      Yeah that was the resident campsite chicken. Which is strange because it was a dog friendly site. Jasper was kept on a tether whilst in the camp grounds. Luckily he’s quite a docile whippet and never seems to be interested in other animals

    Why is he on the lead not to let him run is cruel.

    • @skatepark02
      @skatepark02  5 років тому +2

      J. Mahoney because it was his first time at the beach and there are a lot of other dogs and kids around. He’s currently not trained well enough to be off the lead in public and it would have been irresponsible and potentially dangerous for him if we had done.
      However, in part two of this Vlog (as yet to be finished) he does get let off the lead for the very first time and he absolutely loves it!

    • @bartwilson2513
      @bartwilson2513 5 років тому +2

      J. Mahoney It is very dangerous for a Sighthound to be off lead when not trained well. They have an extremely, extremely high prey drive and can be off in a flash with no hope of you catching them. They also pay no attention to danger when chasing. They are not like other breeds of dogs. I know more than a few sighthounds lost and hit by cars from being off lead. It takes time to train a Sighthound as they tend to be extremely independent minded and full of conditional love. It’s smart to play it safe. In the meantime, off lead in enclosed fields/parks to help with training.

      @@j.mahoney1178 . I agree completely, I have a Beddie and they're very much like whippets in that they can be hard to train. However the longer this poor dog goes from lead to lead, the harder they are making it for themselves. If he's allowed to run free every day then it won't be such a "novelty" as they called it. It will be a dog enjoying what it is meant to do naturally. This dog is going to explode with frustration soon. The only way you can train a dog to be off lead, is to LET IT OFF THE LEAD!
