What are the wood slats sitting on? Looks like grey dowels of some kind?

What kind of woods are those slats?
Those wood slats are made of purple heart, a hard wood often used to make furniture. It is available from speciality hard wood stores. These stores very often can cut the wood for you, which is important because typical saws aren't always strong enough to cut this type of wood.
I love how they are tuned! Very chordal.
