I'm a new pipe smoker and very glad I found this video. So sorry to hear that Alan had passed. Thankful to have these pieces of him in his loss. Well done, sir.
When I began smoking a pipe out of nostalgia for my father and grandfathers who smoked pipes, I found Alan's videos. What a treasure his videos are. RIP, Alan.
An old but trusted and true method that just makes sense - the point being it keeps both pipe and smoke cooler, eradicates tongue bite and lengthens smoking time. RIP Alan, you were a true gent in this realm.
WOW! Thank you from my heart, this video was a revelation to me! I just requested in a forum thread thread, that since its summer my bowls always got very hot, very fast..I had just lit my Churchwarden with a sweet bowl of 221b Baker Street by Dunhill (which would turn out to be the best choice for the moment). There he was sitting..that sympathic old man I wish he was my grandpa..teaching me how to smoke a pipe! Smoking the longest session of not putting the pipe out of my mouth, but still the bowl is cool, very slightly warm at best. I used to get much flavor of tobacco, but this time I got the most pleasureable flavor out of my pipe, hearing this old, charming man say "it's like a meditation, you just smoke and relax" as I'm thinking EXACTLY that...wow, nicotine never made me so calm before. It was a divine moment, really. This opened a whole new world of pipe smoking, a totally new facette of enjoyment. Surely my technique will have flaws, its my first time using it, but I'm willing to take effort to make it a natural habit. Finally I got what "breath smoking" means. I always thought "what are they talking about?! Of course I breath while smoking when clenching" ...well I was young and dumb...I'm still young now, but a tad smarter, and thank you Sir Alan Kerslake for that. I diddn't knew he was dead, but I hope he feels how thankful I am right now, where ever he might be right now! ;-) Rest in piece you good soul!
I truly wish I could have enjoyed a bowl with you. You were the pipe smoking channel that convinced me to stop smoking cigarettes and pick up the pipe.
DUDE in an hour i will be smoking my first ever pipe and i was thinking perhaps i could actually give up cigarettes for it as a healthier option. How has it worked out for you?
vivere militare est , I have been pipe smoking as a hobby for 10+ years, but was also smoking cigarettes. I decided to do the same as you and make a full switch. Take your time. Slowly start replacing you normal cig smokes with a pipe (ie last smoke before bed, first smoke in the morning while driving to work) make the pipe be your new habbit. With that noted, cigs are quick and easy, where a pipe takes a little more time. It's ok, start off by using the pipe when you have the time. You will develop a better liking for the pipe because the taste is more robust and enjoyable. (Once you find a blend you love, have a cig directly after, you will want to put the cig out and think it tastes horrible). Use this new understanding of the pipe to realize that it's OK to not rip on a cig if you only have 2-5 min for a quick smoke. Remember that your pipe is there and is worth the wait. Another note, do not rip on a pipe like a cig, you WILL get tongue bite. Sip the pipe like taking a smooth sip of a $100 bottle of wine. Now, I know you will do it, but don't inhale. When you do, notice the difference in taste (you will loose a lot of flavor). When your craving that hit from a cig deep in your chest, do a couple of retro hales ( puff into your mouth, breathe it out through your nose) this works well for me. It will replace that well known feeling with another, new feeling. Also, if you can, don't get caught up in all the cool sounding aromatic blends. ( chocolate espresso, vanilla cream, ect) there are some tasty aeros out there but they are heavily cased which means more moisture thus more steam. Steam= tongue bite. And new pipers tend to have a fast cadance which will make it worse. Pure Virginias have sweetness. Burlys have natural coco flavor. English blends come in a variety of strength and after you find some you like, they will be some of your favorites. Mmm, what else... Ahh, you will buy a blend, try it and say "I hate this". Before you give it to a fellow piper (we never toss good baccy, give it away) smoke it in a different pipe. Flavors and smoking experience will change from pipe to pipe. Best of luck, there is an epic adventure ahead of you. I've been at it for 10+ years but only got serious about 3 years ago and I still learn new things about this hobby. Sorry for the long rant, but I remember being in your shoes and wish someone told me these things. Happy piping. PS: Penty of great videos on UA-cam if you ever need pointers. 'Stuff and Things' does fantastic blend reviews, and 'Muttin Chop Piper' has an entire series of videos that teach the ins and outs of picking up a pipe for the first time, check them out. I have learned a lot from both. Heck, I've thought about doing my own video on this exact topic. I remember searching for one and could find anything. Hope this helped.
I practiced this technique and smoked an entire bowl down to the bottom of the pipe for the first time. It burned cool, only had a few re-lites, no tongue bites, was almost euphoric. Thanks for the great vid!
Highly useful technique, Alan! I tried comparable things in the past (rather by instinct than in a premiditated way), but this is a definite step forward. It does change the experience in a remarkable way. It is very suitable way of enjoying the leaf - very respectful, so to say, and certainly thought-inducing. Thanks for making me think about this consciously! Thomas
I close my lips around the pipe bit and breathe through my nose. Using my mouth and tongue, I slowly create a vacuum which pulls air through the pipe and smoke into my mouth. I puff a little smoke back through the pipe until I see the smoke come out of the bowl and then let the smoke out of my mouth. I don't inhale. Do this slowly and evenly (that's the key) and the pipe should burn cool and slow. It took a while to master but it really enhanced the experience.
Hello Alan, yesterday I have tried the '' Breath smoking technique`` with a new Pipe , works phantastic, will use them again. Greatings from Bavaria Edward
I'm sorry that I never really got too start a friendship with him other than Commenting on some of his Videos, he was always A very sweet man who actually commented back too young lads that saw him as a mentor, like me I have recently began too Smoke a Pipe too thank you for posting wonderful content for Students of The Briar like me I wish you were still with us I really do miss you my friend. I think we would get along great too bad we never had the chance too really know each other Signed Kenneth Clements
I've used this method a while and it really reduces any tongue bite. I think slightly breathing back in helps reduce moisture and less steam for a bite.
Thanks for this. It's not easy to explain and you did it well. The finger indicating breaths out and in helps. Tamper Peterson made a video about this and Mahkmahkmark did something similar. I find it works best with a lighter weight pipe that I can 'clench' easily.
Allen nice to meet you. Just tuned in for the first time. I haven't mastered the breath method yet. I'll keep practicing. Talk to you soon God bless you
Very awesome, I really in-joyed this video. I appreciate you sharing such a great technique. I will definitely incorporate this with my smokes. take care, J
Thanks Man That Helped Me A lot Now I can smoke properly with my new pipe thanks again man good vid hey guys I learned a new pipesmoking technique today!!! ;)
If you close your mouth completely, you will still be able to breathe. That is when you are breathing through your nose. If you just close your mouth then you should be able to do it
To put it into words: Close your mouth, breath through your nose. In through the nose, out through the nose. In through the nose, out through the pipe (mouth) . In through the pipe (mouth), open mouth and blow smoke out (out through the mouth). Repeat cycle.
Heyy.. I'm a beginner in pipe smoking so I have a question.. Is it normal that my pipe's tobacco extinguish very fast ?! I have to hold my lighter all the time !
No youre not. You create a vacuum with your mouth, when he says breathe through the pipe thats when you clench out the smoke backwards through the pipe. You breathe through your nose
Many find this method effective in keeping the pipe cool, so the tobacco doesn’t burn too fast. His breath is acting as bellows for the embers, gently inhaling the flavors from the tobacco beneath. Try it, you might enjoy this too.

Rest in peace alan
yes I hear it about -+ a year ago.
***** yeah so sad but true
Thank you Alan it was nice sharing a smoke with you while you teach me the perfect way to smoke. Rest In Peace

This has helped me a lot, thank you. RIP Alan
Thank you. My last two bowls were the smoothest and coolest I have ever smoked.
When you are breathing in and out, are you 'drawing' in with your mouth or just holding the pipe there steady?
I close my lips around the pipe bit and breathe through my nose. Using my mouth and tongue, I slowly create a vacuum which pulls air through the pipe and smoke into my mouth. I puff a little smoke back through the pipe until I see the smoke come out of the bowl and then let the smoke out of my mouth. I don't inhale. Thank you sir, will give it a shot.
Very pleasant fellow. Pipes and books, how nice. My first time stopping by and very thankful we have his videos to refer back to. Peace be with all

Corey Kelly what is the idea behind it?

Frank
Love his accent. Is he Irish?
Welsh
This might be a stupid question but how do you breath through your nose without inhaling? I'm not sure I understand.
If you close your mouth completely, you will still be able to breathe. That is when you are breathing through your nose. If you just close your mouth then you should be able to do it
I truly miss Alan
I never got the chance to interact with him seeing as i found his channel after his passing, but he seemed like a wonderful man.
To put it into words:
Close your mouth, breath through your nose.
In through the nose, out through the nose.
In through the nose, out through the pipe (mouth) .
In through the pipe (mouth), open mouth and blow smoke out (out through the mouth).
Repeat cycle.
looks very relaxing...
Thanks! I was thinking that was pretty hard core.
Thank you Mr. Kerkslake
actually want to know what lighter was he using. too bad .
Nice . . . YOU ~ ROCK ! !
What are your thoughts on clay pipes?
This works great. Thanks!
Are you breathing in thru you nose and out thru the pipe? I've tried this but I end up with a hot/wet smoke.
beathing in always through the nose. .out the mouth and /or nose or both.
Heyy.. I'm a beginner in pipe smoking so I have a question.. Is it normal that my pipe's tobacco extinguish very fast ?! I have to hold my lighter all the time !
You will and don't let it discourage you. Like sokingmafia said, as you get better you'll relite less.
I dont understand. Are you inhaling the smoke?
No youre not. You create a vacuum with your mouth, when he says breathe through the pipe thats when you clench out the smoke backwards through the pipe. You breathe through your nose
I will try that.
Miss you my friend
Why complicate the whole affair...? I don't get it.
Many find this method effective in keeping the pipe cool, so the tobacco doesn’t burn too fast. His breath is acting as bellows for the embers, gently inhaling the flavors from the tobacco beneath. Try it, you might enjoy this too.
can you sell me some ?
Some WHAT?
I though this way the way everyone did it haha.
