Brad hugging your Canna is just too cute 😍🤗Garden is looking great! cant wait to get started on my gardens this year (UK tho, so will look very different lol)
2 videos in one week, Thank You! And yes, what an amazing watercolour. Loving your new space and as always, excellent, interesting, informative content. Brads ear wiggle 💙🌟💙
I really love it what you say about the caterpillars eating one of your plants. It's amazing to realize how the cycle works, and technically, you're feeding caterpillars that will soon become pretty butterflies. You're amazing, Jan! 👏💕
Your outdoor garden is wonderful. The variegated Canna is beautiful. What a great way to use all your propagations. I may move some of my props out to my garden. You would enjoy playing with some outdoor solar lights that are on stakes & fairy lights. Will make the garden magical at night. Thanks for the tour Jan. Have a great day.

Thanks for sharing your garden update. Yeah, just gotta get through autumn and winter and then the real magic happens....can't wait for that video update!! We've been getting some pretty chilly mornings but the sun has been loyal so far. Happy acclimatising 😆
That looks amazing. You were brave to put your indoor plants outside. Sometimes I have trouble with bugs eating some of my outdoor plants leaves, I actually spray neem oil on my outdoor plants, and it worked really well this year to keep the bugs from eating them. I only did it like twice this spring.
Absolutely beautiful!. You got lemons and turned it into a beautiful peaceful environment and a new adventure! Not only are you learning and growing...but teaching us as well. Exciting to go along and learn on your journey! You two look so happy in your new space!❤🙌🌿
Thank you, you have given me ideas of what to do with my plant propagations, I can try the extra plants outside and see who makes it. I have already split my philodendron Sellum ( I know it was reclassified but it’s hard enough to say let alone spell) so I will keep one chunk outside and a chunk inside. I just chopped my Billie so I can start it up a pole so the extra can go outside and climb a tree. Again thank you
Jan your channel is so refreshing! I'm so glad I found it. I got into aroids growing them outdoors in south Florida where they would climb up trees and mature naturally and easily and then I had to move my whole collection to indoor growing when I moved to the Northern US. You are the only plant person out there (or at least one of very few) who seems to really "get it" and give useful information about growing indoors! I thought moss poles were ugly until I found your reels :) Now I'm having so much fun watching my plants grow nearly as big an impressive as they did outdoors. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, successes and failures. Enjoy your ourdoor growing adventures!
Good job!! I am really happy for you because there is nothing like outdoor gardening! And on top of that, you are lucky to have soil and don't have to deal with pots only! Inspo will keep coming! There is always something to do/tweak with outdoor gardening. Have fun !
My Cryptosperma Johnsonii loves a bog garden..or to sit in water.. you could add a small pond in your outdoor garden and have Colocasias as well.. 🥰🥰🥰 but I do love to see how much its all grown. Even in the short time its been planted.. I am prepping my gardens over winter and doing a mass plant out come beginning of spring.. cant wait.
Hi ! This is just awesome, I really love what you did in your garden and most of all, your way of thinking about plants living their "nature" life outside ! Climate is changing and nature is evolving to adapt, finding a way to survive. I'm living in the northern hemisphere and I hope that one day i'll have the most eclectic and international garden I can have 🥰 my new goal ! Have a nice week !

What a great space. 🤩I can not wait to see how everything does growing forward. Now, I'm on the other side of the planet in SW Ontario, Canada and put some of my plants outside in my wee garden space in late spring/summer, whenever the temps stay above 15 consistently. The comment on those "Instagram nature" folk is a hoot... I always snicker when people get their knickers in a knot over pests outdoors. LOL. I never worry about pest control, and I imagine you all have beneficial bugs already, and they'll be doing a happy dance at the prospects. My only nemesis outdoors are the rascally squirrels digging everything up, grrrrr... so I am careful about what I do put outside, as they are very very destructive beasties.
I also live in Southern Ontario, Canada, and the squirrels are my mortal enemy. I thought my strawberry plants weren't producing any fruit for two whole years. They're evil little ninjas and they get into everything! Chicken manure fertilizer keeps them away though, it's a godsend. Hope you have good luck keeping the beasties away this summer!
@@jordanwharton5286 I tried to grow tomatoes once a few years back, and they stole them all. Em... chicken manure fert.... I will have to try that. Great tip. Thank you!
Beautiful outdoor space and loved the update!❤ We placed a few large rocks near our most vulnerable plants creating a micro climate. This year they survived a few freezing nights.
Beautiful courtyard, perhaps few may go dormant in winter. A shade cloth might help to minimize the winter impact as well as beneficial for summer too. Officially Gardener now...Haha..
It’s looking amazing Jan! I totally agree with you on everything! First I had to learn what grew well in my climate, soil, area, how much time I was going to invest in my plants and definitely no spraying of chemicals! I started growing Milk week to encourage monarch butterflies into my garden and planting quick growing herbs or plants to attract the cabbage moths away from my special plants! You are teaching me so much! Hugs to Brad! 🐈💚🪴 Natalie SA
Fantastic garden! I believe your existing shrubs are Murraya and I suspect that the two trees are Spotted Gums. The Murrayas have heavily scented small white flowers in spring and after heavy rain.
Congratulations on your new garden!🎉 A tip I learned a couple years ago from a grower regarding the Cyrtosperma Johnstonii , was to keep it in a pot outside, but sit it in a tray or deeper saucer filled with water. It wants to be moist. Also , if it does not like to get cold ( which they say it is sensitive to , )you can bring indoors temporarily) Mine unfortunately was outside during the only two times this past winter ( in Florida)we were out of town, and it got really cold…thought I lost it… it lost all leaves , looked dead for months…. I was so upset…but, I kept it , and now it’s spring and I got lucky & it’s miraculously revived!! Thought I’d share that ….❤ Best regards!
I don't know how much you need the shade of the scrubby trees that you don't love, but I would prune them back to make sure you have plenty of space for the plants you do love, and because it would benefit those scraggly looking things to be pruned. They should get fuller, like any other plant when pinched back. 😉
Thanks mate, now I know what to do with my r.decursiva… put it out onto the patio so maybe it’ll grow those glorious larger leaves ❤ Love your work … Say hi to sweet Brad for me 🐱
These all look so great and I look forward to seeing how they withstand the winter in Sydney. I live in a coolish SA town by the beach and between the winds and the salt I just cannot seem to grow anything outside other than Rosemary, but I live in hope that I will someday. But we are sort of the exact opposite to where these tropical plants grow here so I might have to be realistic.
speaking from experience, you may want to put up an inexpensive shade cloth. Maybe 30-50% shade rating. I don’t know how your midday sun is in winter, but definitely for the summertime. Aroids love being outside but they sunburn incredibly easily if they are totally uncovered.
Companion planting does help with pest management as it attracts beneficial insects like bees, wasps, and birds. Or in some cases deter pests, using mint or garlic. Initially I also made my garden ornamental (which most still is) but then I started planting some small productive patches like fruit trees and cannabis shrubs these past couple of years. Even some of the early aphids to attack new leaves were quickly eradicated by birds that literally picked them off one by one from the tips of the fruit trees. These are just some old-school permaculture practices that are much more eco friendly and sustainable than using pesticides.
Amazing! Might I suggest moving the plants on moss poles against the house for Winter, the house will retain the heat from the sun and if you group them close together they will also keep each other warm. To keep the base roots warm You could wrap the pots in burlap and put them in a pot or bucket filled with mulch or straw. Are you worried about the phenolic and terpenoid compounds in the leaves killing your plants, or will you be diligent in keeping them from building up? All it takes is a light buildup and water to start them decomposing and releasing those killer compounds. We used to collect them and sit them to dry then they went into a little stone chimenea that could be lit on fire to smoke out the mosquitoes, midges, and other party pests. Thanks for sharing your dream with us
I won't have a way to secure them to the house wall, so they'll have to stay near the fence where I can hook them up but I should probably move them a bit closer :) Yeah I'm gonna try and collect as many of the leaves that drop as possible :) makes it look neater too.
You have mild winters there, the plants should do fine, don't you think? If not I just had an idea, you could install some sort of greenhouse to keep them in. It looks like you have room. It could be done.
That looks awesome, glad to see the enjoyment from it . I would like to think they would do ok for the winter , it i similar in temps I think to how cool it gets at night visiting the carribean etc during the winter, which seem to me ro be similar climatea , but I could be wrong... Canada is a dif story , wish it wasn't , I would love to have some outside like this. There are some insulating things that can be done to help on cool nights maybe if neccesary, things we employ here for the when it does snow in such , like extra mulch around the root ball, cold shelters ( extreme temps I think), burlap wraps etc , maybe some of those could help if necessary ... hoping everthing goes well
Very cool 😎 waiting to see if you take AJs inspiration to make a pond for the colocasia Mojito. Trying to figure out something for my own colocasia M. Thanks for another great show and tell 😻
I hear ya 😸 I'm contemplating some sort of portable water fountain if the esthetics fit indoors and out. Our winters here in zone 8b have been colder than average. Otherwise my Mojito can just hang out In it's overfilled cover pot, self watering style I guess. ( As for my climbers, I'm finally getting them on moss poles or grow vertical, enjoying watching back video tutorials to guide the process) Thanks again for your excellent content 😻
Only half way through and it’s glorioussss so far!! I just have to mention this because I care, but black (synthetically colored) mulch is very carcinogenic (at least here in the states). Not sure if you care, and it’s not a super big deal since you aren’t growing food, but just wanted to bring it up if you have your hands (and Brad) in it a lot and didn’t know:) I think it would still be an amazing space with some nice naturally dark mulch if you ever need to add some on top! 🙌🏼🌿💚
Where I live, the pests change a little each year on a rotation. We have a work we can an "army worm" and you either see 1 or thousands to the point that the roads will be slick with their yuck. They eat pretty much every leaf you can think of but mostly the native things. In years where they are in the thousands you can see nature all lush and beautiful and then the next day the "army" has moved through and there is no green left! When intentionally buying plants for outside I look for things that don't generally attract deer because they will eat all your lilies and so much stuff so fast! If you're buying from a proper nursery there plants will be labeled saying if they deter deer or not, but deer are like tall dogs and don't always read the labels so it can still be hit and miss. There is nothing more beautiful and frustrating than going out in the morning and seeing a deer munching all your flowers before they got to bloom. They look at you with their big eyes like "thanks for breakfast!" 🤣 I try to buy annuals for in pots for up on the deck and last year I opened the door and a deer head it's great through the railing and was eating from the planter. I laughed and said hello. I do get flowers that affect bees and hummingbirds and butterflies. We did have a bee allergy in the house so I am very careful about paying attention to the times of day they are acting on the plants, they literally work on the clock by the second it's amazing! I also look under the deck and furniture etc for anyone who may be trying to build a hive as when they get a give really close is when you're more likely to get stung for no reason. I remove them quickly and they go back to safety but still come by to work! It's a careful balance to encourage them to thrive and not die out while also not allowing them to kill a family member 🤷🏼♀️ The ONLY thing I do use a chemical food is ants, but we have an absolute ton and they get in the house and bite and get into food and all sorts of things. Last year my dog was outside screaming in pain and I rushed to him and he had ants all up his legs and one was biting his lip and wouldn't let go. 😭 He had a fat lip for several days so I do use ant traps simply BC they are a health concern for all of us. They hurt so bad when they bite you and they don't need provoked. 😭 I don't use anything that other critters generally get into though for the same reason you don't. Again, it's a delicate balance to live harmoniously in nature and for it to be safe. Your garden is looking lovely. With all the plants close together like they are they're creating their own little ecosystem with a slightly better temperature and they'll help take care of each other through the cold. I live where we do get heaps of snow but in the spring and fall to help keep plants from the cold at night I cover them with a lightweight bedsheet, you can buy things specifically for this but it really helps on the nights where it does get down to 6 or so. You put it on when the sun is still up to help keep in the heat from the sun, essentially creating a little fabric green house. There are some trees that aren't native here and people wrap them in burlap each fall and they mulch fairly high around them to protect the roots and they manage to survive year after year this way!
Woooo!!! Hyped for this one!! How bad are the mosquitos there?? I get eaten alive here in Texas whenever I’m in my outdoor space 😖 I’m sooo excited for you, specifically for your crawlers!! I know it’s always been a love hate relationship for you, so it’s great they will get to be wild now😍
Curious how this will go for you! From my experience Philodendron do not like the cold, my other plants showed no issues only the Philos. I didn't have them outside but my house gets very cold in winter - down to 9 degrees 😮❤
Love your approach to growing. Excited to see how this all fairs over winter. I will be taking notes! Been trying to find a ground cover so my fingers are crossed for your Maranta. Have you considered Chocolate plant (Pseuderanthemum alata)?
Looking great Jan 🤩 You must also have nice healthy soil for plants to be popping out new growth like that. Lucky your move happened in time for them to acclimatise before winter. Also lucky to have Brad to nurture the babies and keep them warm.🐱💕🌱
What is the temperature and humidity like in Sydney summers? Coming from Southern California “desert”, I assumed you would be more concerned about the heat of the summer than the cold of winter. How’s the process of keeping your poles moist outside? Thanks! 😉
Looks great. Just wondering if your in ground plants are going to need a different fertilizer program, I do know different soils contain different usable minerals? Just a thought 🌷💚🙃
Yes, theybare good for support but don’t have the propagation & optimisation benefits moss poles have. I have an in-depth video where I compare supports in my moss pole playlist
@sydneyplantguy random question: let's say you had to move in a year, would you unplant all the plants that you just planted in your garden or would you leave them for the next person? kind of curious to know sorry I know it's random lol

Fabulous gum trees
Love love looove them!!
Everything is falling into place…except the ‘damn native’🤣. Thanks for sharing Jan!
Thanks :)
Truely perfect bro💚
Companion planting does help with pest management as it attracts beneficial insects like bees, wasps, and birds. Or in some cases deter pests, using mint or garlic. Initially I also made my garden ornamental (which most still is) but then I started planting some small productive patches like fruit trees and cannabis shrubs these past couple of years. Even some of the early aphids to attack new leaves were quickly eradicated by birds that literally picked them off one by one from the tips of the fruit trees. These are just some old-school permaculture practices that are much more eco friendly and sustainable than using pesticides.
Sounds great :) i’ll look into it! Thanks :)
I adore your view on pests in nature. I just found an actual spider on one of my plants, now he gets to stay, he’ll eat the mites and aphids 😅
Thanks for sharing your dream with us
I won't have a way to secure them to the house wall, so they'll have to stay near the fence where I can hook them up but I should probably move them a bit closer :)
Yeah I'm gonna try and collect as many of the leaves that drop as possible :) makes it look neater too.
Make sure you leave room for AJs pond 😉 looking great though! I think the mcdowells new leaf was my favourite 😍
Thanks :) might not be enough room for a pond ;)
@Sydney Plant Guy with how keen she is, I bet she could make room 😂 even a nice water foundation would look amazing somewhere out there!
You have mild winters there, the plants should do fine, don't you think? If not I just had an idea, you could install some sort of greenhouse to keep them in. It looks like you have room. It could be done.
We'll see how they go :) should be fine but time will tell
Everything looks wonderful as usual 😍
Thanks :)
There are some insulating things that can be done to help on cool nights maybe if neccesary, things we employ here for the when it does snow in such , like extra mulch around the root ball, cold shelters ( extreme temps I think), burlap wraps etc , maybe some of those could help if necessary ... hoping everthing goes well
Thanks :)
Very cool 😎 waiting to see if you take AJs inspiration to make a pond for the colocasia Mojito. Trying to figure out something for my own colocasia M. Thanks for another great show and tell 😻
well, I don't think there is enough space left for her pond :D
I hear ya 😸 I'm contemplating some sort of portable water fountain if the esthetics fit indoors and out. Our winters here in zone 8b have been colder than average. Otherwise my Mojito can just hang out In it's overfilled cover pot, self watering style I guess. ( As for my climbers, I'm finally getting them on moss poles or grow vertical, enjoying watching back video tutorials to guide the process) Thanks again for your excellent content 😻
Love it ❤️🙏
Only half way through and it’s glorioussss so far!!
🙌🏼🌿💚
Thank :) I'll do some research on it :)
@@sydneyplantguy yes please do! 🤗 wanted to at least spread the info and have you do your own research, than not say anything. Sweet blessings!🐝
Oh geez, let's just hope I'll never have to experience crazy pests like that :D
Woooo!!! Hyped for this one!! How bad are the mosquitos there?? I get eaten alive here in Texas whenever I’m in my outdoor space 😖
I’m sooo excited for you, specifically for your crawlers!! I know it’s always been a love hate relationship for you, so it’s great they will get to be wild now😍
Haven't noticed any mossies but they might come out in spring :P
Curious how this will go for you! From my experience Philodendron do not like the cold, my other plants showed no issues only the Philos. I didn't have them outside but my house gets very cold in winter - down to 9 degrees 😮❤
Yeah it's the philos I'm most worried about :P the monsteras should be fine I reckon :)
@@sydneyplantguy I think so too, my Monstera have never shown any signs of struggle in winter, tho they might grow slower ❤
Love your approach to growing. Excited to see how this all fairs over winter. I will be taking notes! Been trying to find a ground cover so my fingers are crossed for your Maranta. Have you considered Chocolate plant (Pseuderanthemum alata)?
Thanks :) never heard of this plant :O
Congratulations on having an outdoor garden! 🎉 Just a quick word of caution, the ornamental yam may be invasive in your climate.
Yeah she might be so she stays in a pot :)
It's soooooo beautiful ✨💚✨😻🐾🐾😅
Thank you:)
@@sydneyplantguy your welcome 🤗
Looking great Jan 🤩 You must also have nice healthy soil for plants to be popping out new growth like that. Lucky your move happened in time for them to acclimatise before winter. Also lucky to have Brad to nurture the babies and keep them warm.🐱💕🌱
Looks amazing! Great job!
Thanks :)
Its looking so good! I was wondering if you had to ask the landlord if you could plant in the garden?
I think the eucalypts are maculata (spotted gum) and citronella (lemon scented gum) ❤❤
This is amazing!!!!
Thank you :)
What is the temperature and humidity like in Sydney summers? Coming from Southern California “desert”, I assumed you would be more concerned about the heat of the summer than the cold of winter. How’s the process of keeping your poles moist outside? Thanks! 😉
Amazing ❤❤❤
Looks great. Just wondering if your in ground plants are going to need a different fertilizer program, I do know different soils contain different usable minerals? Just a thought 🌷💚🙃
I have no idea (for now) time will tell :)
Have you tried use wood plank insteady moss pole?
Yes, theybare good for support but don’t have the propagation & optimisation benefits moss poles have. I have an in-depth video where I compare supports in my moss pole playlist
@sydneyplantguy random question: let's say you had to move in a year, would you unplant all the plants that you just planted in your garden or would you leave them for the next person? kind of curious to know sorry I know it's random lol
