  • In today's episode, we arrived in New Plymouth Taranaki after being in Hawkes Bay and decided to stay here for 2 weeks to explore the region!
New Plymouth is a city on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. It’s known for its coastal walkway stretching from Bell Block to Port Taranaki. Te Rewa Rewa Bridge has views of towering Mount Taranaki. The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery shows contemporary exhibitions.

I moved here from the UK and love it. You should have gone up Paritutu rock and walked on Back Beach. Probably the best spot. Even though sometimes the weather is wet, we do get a lot of sunny days too.

The parts of New Plymouth are outside the city centre. Back beach, Fitzroy, etc.

Taranaki is a stunning region and on my opinion is underrated in terms of its beauty. The reason its cold and wet is because its on the west coast of island in the middle of ocean at the bottom of the world with no real land mass near it. Along with the cold ocean wind hitting the side of the mountain. There is also some interesting history in the region. Is should suggest looking into the Taranaki wars to get an understanding of it.

New Plymouth is a beautiful town.I lived there 74,75 and have been back to visit a few times. The weather can be a challenge but when you get a sunny day it is a very special place.

It's nice to see visitors enjoying our country and so enthusiastic about things we New Zealanders so often take for granted. New Plymouth is indeed a great city with a spectacular setting, very welcoming people and a nice vibe. We almost located there, but in the end Napier won out.

I lived in NP from 1960-1965. Completely different city in those days. Main shopping was done on a Friday, with the shops staying open quite late. Although all drinking establishments closed at 6 pm every day! Hardly any shops open over the weekend. Had to be 21 to drink alcohol, but could ride any size motorbike and drive cars at 15. I've been back for holidays 3 times over the years, as I still have family there. Still love the whole of New Zealand, particularly New Plymouth.

We feel you! Probably a very different place back in them days. Would love to experience the 60s in New Zealand. I'd say it felt even more isolated away from the world!

@GlenAndMado I remember in the 60's, to phone the UK, a call had to be pre- booked, and it cost £1 per minute! Also, on the way there, by ship of course, my family gave me the news that NZ didn't have TV at all.

You should make your way to Newfoundland, Canada. As a Kiwi living in Canada, to me, Newfoundland is one of the places that is most like New Zealand. When I first got off the Ferry in Port aux Basques, NL and started driving through the mountains...my brain thought I was home in NZ, it was very emotional. I think thats why I have such a connection to NL, because it is so much like home for me. Yes, even the weather there is like Taranaki, it has its moments where it is just pure shite. But humans are very sturdy creatures, we adapt and push on, just like Newfondlanders, no heartier a breed then them.

Its quiet because its still a smaller population. Around 87,500, and New Plymouth is a hugely spread out City. I haven't lived here since 95 and its changed a lot. Do some research of the places.

I grew up in Taranaki and we get some of the heaviest rains, like the West coast of the South Island. I find it incredible how much people moan and winge of the temperature here. Look at the situation of the country. Where decent clothing. They remind me of this English family sitting next to our table when I used to live in Dunedin.

I went back to NP a few years ago after the expressways were built, and visited relations and freinds.Unfortunitly I was not impressed with the city at all.I stayed at the Bell Block motorcamp. The heavy waves throwed salt spray right towards my Camper, the heavy winds was as if I was in Wellington.I drove up towards the mountain to get a veiw, but the traffic was banked up and I couldnt drive any further, having to turn arround and come back. The car park at the top was already full.Pukekura park was the only place I felt okay about. But driving towards NP from MT Messenger end was far more pleasent through those small towns and beaches than NP its self.
