You will need software such as MatLab to solve the equations. You need the mass balance on the mass, biogas, and on the substrate. It is not really possible to write these equations in text boxes. Essentially, you would have for the biogas: Input = Output - Production + Accumulation. The production is the key component where you need to insert the Monod equation and use: dCH4/dt = Y * mu (growth from Monod kinetics) * X. Also look up the Buswell equation for bio methane production; if you know the composition of the feedstock, you can theoretically calculate how much you get out of it.
got my data for the lab i did, the problem is the substrate concentration (glucose) decreases over time while specific growth rate increases. I know glucose will decrease as the microbe uses glucose. When plotting the graph, it looks really bad as specific growth rate increases but substrate concentration decreases. What did i do wrong?
It is hard for me to comment on this without knowing the context. There is usual a log phase (delay) before growth starts so it can take a while before you get to the maximum growth rate. It might be that you did not reach the max specific growth rate in your experiment if it was relatively short? It might be easier to look at the graph where you plot number of cells vs time
@@MarloesPeeters,yes Madam! I want to design and model anaerobic bioreactor for production of methane from domestic wastes. Pls, how do I go about this?
Thanks for adding the newer models! my outdated textbooks don't even cover those in PhD level courses
Glad you found it useful!
Thank you! Very comprehensively and understandably explained!
Thank you so much! Ive been strugling trying to figure so many equations out but this really makes sense finally. Thank you!
Glad it helped :)

greetings prof, i want to ask a question. do attached growth media (plastic kaldness media) increase growth rate?
I don’t know much about this - the advantage of this is it’s high surface area. But it does not work for every system
@@MarloesPeeters i see, so it's purely depends on the microorganism and the limiting substrate
@@NKG416 I presume this will also depend on the reactor (geometry etc). From what I have read, it is very suitable for aquatic systems.
@@MarloesPeeters thank you so much for the answer

Thank you! We are looking to expand the bioreactor playlist so please let us know if you have any suggestions for topics to discuss
@Marloes Peeters Really appreciate it, please just Keep going your explanation is so worthy, Thanks!
