Kia ora - At 47yo and after a long history of artistic challenges at different platforms, I finally found Maori carving! And what a feeling it is bro. Thanks for shedding some extra light on the subject, you summed it all up beautifully. Unfortunately, I have hardly any education as far as the traditional understandings of carving goes, and I’m finding it hard to source more information about it to learn from.
As someone who has struggled with mental health for 30 years+ since my parents divorced in 1990, I have found Maori carving extremely therapeutic and beneficial to my mental health. I just wish I had some more books/videos to educate myself more. I believe in my artistic ability and carving excites me a lot. My work may not be traditionally correct, but I pay respect to my carvings through the heart ❤️ and hard work that I put into it.
    Rant over…
    cheers brutha ❤️
