I love this version of Mr. Guder, and Iove how the camera stays on Karen during the extended instrumental section with the added keyboard and drum fill. Great. She looks so happy!
This is what real natural talent looks & sounds like. There not on stage blowing anything up, or have a gimmick like the shit they air on tv today. The Carpenters were the real deal, what you heard on the record, you really heard in concert. These were the most magical years in Richard's life as he say. I say keep holding on to it Rich the magic will last forever. Thank you for all that you & Karen have done for music. You & Bettis are some team as well. These are your years, enjoy your family!
Hmmmm...you know you're right about that. Breaking into the music scene is difficult and many acts use a gimmick to make it. Little Michael Jackson, Little Donny Osmond, Elton John and his chicken outfits, Liberace and his outfits, The Who and their destruction of their instruments, Billy Idol and his sneer, Devo and their novelty act, Boy George and his boa, The Beatles and their long hair. The Carpenters broke in without any gimmick so silly, but they did have a gimmick, it's just their gimmick was the stupendously excellent Carpenters multi-track sound, which is a gimmick but at the same time is in equal measure an excellent musical product and performance. As far as their live act sounding the same as their record....uh...no, they can't reproduce 20 tracks of Karen and 20 tracks of Richard live. You may think that because on most Carpenters videos you are hearing the record. Even if you are hearing live, there are probably tracks playing as well to augment their sound with the orchestra and also backing vocals, and to avoid the appearance of deceiving his audience Richard will even put the tape machine on stage and refer to it during the performance. All that said, just Richard and Karen singing live in duet is effective at creating an amazing facsimile of the Carpenters studio sound. They are truly amazing talents.
Thanks so much for posting these Behind The Scenes. She seems the happiest when she's behind the drums. I believe she called herself a drummer that sings. Love and miss her!
