- "The President's Own" United States Marine Band presents The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa, a multi-year project to record and publish scores for all of Sousa's Marches. Sousa, known as "The March King," was director of the Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. Recording directed by Lieutenant Col. Jason K. Fettig. www.marineband.marines.mil/
According to an inscription on the printed music, this march was dedicated to the officers and men of the 3rd U.S. Infantry. Although different from Sousa’s other marches in musical format, it is regarded as one of his better efforts.

I have never figured out whether Sousa meant the first 20 bar section of this to be a long introduction or simply the longer part of a 36 bar first strain. Although it sounds like a long introduction, unlike typical march introductions it is repeated along with the standard sixteen bar section that follows it. I am always amazed at how Sousa constantly experimented with the standard march form, and it is done very cleverly here.
A great march that should be heard more often. Thanks to the members of The President's Own.
played this during high school band.. tuba line. our director had up play some notes an octive lower to makke it a more deeper tone. and we didnt play any of the repeats.
this was the most fun band piece i have ever played, and i still get it stuck in my head from time to time lol
By far one of my favorite marches by Sousa, and played so wonderfully by The President's Own, amazing.
This march is excruciatingly difficult to make sound right when performing. Everything has to be just so or it ends up really sloppy sounding. It’s one of Sousa’s finest marches though.
exurb1a I love you so much, like a lot.
Samuel Yael Precisely why I’m here
Why be nice, when you can be right?~
i hate all humans except occasionally those who enjoys watching that deranged british turtle and his cat
Good
The percussion (especially the snare drum) must have a stronger sound from 2:37 until the end.
Otherwise, bravo.
Maplemuffin I’m hearing PLENTY of snare drum. It is neither melody, nor harmony.
So that they can completely obliterate the upper woodwinds obbligato?
Sooo...we're questioning the tradition of march playing by the band Sousa commanded? Do I have that right?
I wonder what difficulty level this song is
These marches predate the concept of “graded music” for school bands, but due to the difficulties in the clarinet parts, I would say it’s pretty challenging.
It's on par with other Sousa marches.
Not easy.
