    Thanks, sir. I’d really like to grow potatoes this year. I grew potatoes with my great-grandma a few years ago, in a container. She watched/helped from the very beginning but she ended up passing away right before time to harvest. That potato harvest was one of the last things we ever talked about together while she was in the hospital. I’d like to grow some more, in her memory.

      Oh no. Definitely plant and remember her for sure.

    I have a short window for growing potatoes in Alabama. They don't do well in the hest. By mid May, the daily temperatures are too high, even partially shaded. From experience, the best planting time is the first week in March. By April, itr is already too late. This year, I am dedicating a 3x6 raised bed to growing potatoes, and have Russets (Idaho) chitted and cut. I'm waiting for the rain to stop to plant them.

    Hi Gary....I didn't know about this channel until a title I saw caught my eye and I've just kept watching the next highlighted video. I'm not a new gardener by any means and I've grown potatoes for many years, however I learned something watching you today. I have never heard of disinfecting the cut edge of the potato. Never, so I was surprised when you mentioned it, but as a retired RN I can certainly understand the benefits of doing it. I don't have my seed potatoes yet and I'm rapidly approaching the time to get them chitted and dried in time for my March 17th target date, but they'll be okay anyway. As a seasoned gardener I still very much appreciate the extra and more in-depth time you take on this channel....probably because I love learning and I'm a, "but WHY ?" kinda girl....LOL Now excuse me while I finish watching this potato video!

      Thanks so much. It helps just in case a mold spores are around your potatoes. Always ask Why x2. Cheers.

    Most of the seed potatoes I have found at Tractor Supply are already sprouting (Chitted). If I want to plant waves of potatoes, is it okay that the sprouts are longer? Also, seed potatoes are hard to find later in the year for a fall harvest. Obviously, the potatoes I purchase now will be way past the planting stage by that time. Do you use organic potatoes bought at the store or save some of the potatoes grown earlier in the season for seed potatoes? I planted my red norlands more than 4 inches....now I know..should be okay though, right? . Thanks!!

      After a inch they tend to struggle. Maybe keep them cool. They can get like 6-8 inches long.

    Excellent video. I have never grown potatoes so this was perfect. I have gathered a ton of feed bags I was thinking of planting them in. Do you recommend this? If so, how deep should I have the soil in the bag?

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  7 місяців тому

      Most of determinate varieties go 4 inches deep I like to have 12 inches of soil under them at least so they dont dry out.

    In terms of the 60-80 day growing time, is that 60 -80 days from the time they go in the garden bed or the time that they form above ground leaves?

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  7 місяців тому

      Well as soon as the green emerges but... if you know the soil is warm and the potato is active under ground, you gain a bit of time.

    What would you say is easier to grow in Maryland in this humid hot climate, standard potatoes or sweet potatoes?

      Ive grown both with success. Potatoes get potato beetles but the can be managed.

    Thank you. I have a few questions please. Do the indeterminates do well in containers? Also, are pretty much any of these good for frying too? If you plant earlier than recommended, is it better to use a potato that has not been chitted? In other words, if you used the whole unchitted and uncut potato could it spend that earlier plant time chitting in the ground and then sprout at the ideal time?

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  7 місяців тому +1

      You can but you do need a bit larger containers. Fill the with 8 inches to start, sink potatoes 4 inches deep and than back fill as they grow, Ill be going over it. You can plant unchitted in early yes. Either stage works. I pan fry most of mine. Slice and cook in a pan. The determinates work well for than.

    • @georgelandry7942

      No they grow differently. You sprouts slips (plants) from a sweet potato and plant them to get a harvest of sweet potatoes.

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  7 місяців тому +1

      Nope. They aren't actually potatoes. I just did a video on it, here. Search Sweet Potato on my channel and you will see how.
