Dr Death and Terry Gordy were a tremendous tag team. That match in WCW against the Steiners was incredible.
Dr. Death's work in All Japan was truly amazing. Must see wrestling for sure.
All japan really made amazing use of so many foreign stars which wwf/wcw ruined.
I grew up on Mid-South. There was nothing better at the time. Dr. Death was always jacked and hyped.

Dr. Death is sadly a horribly misunderstood wrestler from younger people who only know him for his disastrous WWF run in the Attitude Era. In the 80s and early 90s he was in the Vader/Meng tier of being a badass everyone feared.
Vader wasn't feared because he was a tough guy, people just didn't like working with him because he was stiff. 46 year old Paul Orndorff in flip-flops beat him up after an argument where Vader hit first.

I remember watching the Dr. Death/ Hacksaw Dugan feud during the Mid South days (1980s). It culminated in a football pads match that I got to see in person. When I saw Steve Williams in person, I couldn’t believe how big he was.
Dr. Death was a legit badass. Strong as anyone in wrestling, body-pressing Terry Gordy for reps. This story of 2 months training to barely lose to the greatest amateur in history of NCAA wrestling and a 2-tim gold medalist shows what he could have done if he wasn't also a 4-time All-American in football. Bill Watts practically adopted him as the son he wished he'd had. He was everything Watts had been and more, and was so good. It's sad that other than with Watts, he never got the push he should have. JR loves him because of his OU pedigree, Watts influence, and his own relationship with the man. Along with Austin, I believe he's JR's favorite all-time.
Well he did get a pretty legendary run in All-Japan. Mostly as a tag guy, but part of one of the most legendary teams in the history of Japanese pro wrestling. Not to mention he won the Triple Crown, and would've had a bigger singles run if it weren't for the legal issues he ran into that got him temporarily banned from the country.

I worked with Steve in Denver, had a lot of good talks, great guy. I remember he told me a story about a bunch of wrestlers getting in a bar fight and him seeing a guy get his eyes gauged out. RIP Steve ❤
I'm going through the territories and most of wrestling in general from the 80s and EVERY time Dr Death shows up, people start dropping. The guy was an absolute beast in the 80s and he's so much fun to watch
Just remember…Dr. Death got his nickname BEFORE he got into Pro Wrestling…..
According to Wikipedia '...Williams had a ready-made nickname that dated back to an incident in junior high wherein he had to wrestle in a hockey goalie's mask due to shattering his nose and was jokingly labeled "Dr. Death" by one of his school's coaches and his sister.
In northwest Florida, we got South Eastern Championship wrestling in the 70's-80's.... but sometimes the TV station would play Midwest, Dr. Death and Hacksaw were SCARY!!!
I first saw Dr Death the short time UWF was on TV. I immediately became a fan of his.

Dorrance Funk is around and active in his eighties. A major company could still hire him.
Not only a great wrestler, he still has one of the baddest boots ever. The drop of blood on the edges was bad ass as he was.

In 1985 I was playing D1 soccer with the centenary Gents from Shreveport , La. We were on a road trip in Oklahoma, staying at La Quinta motor Inn. Once set up and relaxing the activity began , we were peeking out the windows and cracked doors. Dr. Death was five feet from my mug and gave me an eye to eye stare. The chap was as broad as tall , wearing a smoking jacket. A badass mother to behold. Those were the days!!

Steve Williams was the real deal and a legit shooter. Whatever wrestling is or became today, go back and watch some on the old Mid-South/UWF stuff on UA-cam and watch Steve Williams. If there was any wrestler who was Thor's Hammer, Dr. Death was it. At the time of the UWF, I was in Atlanta and a local TV station on Saturday night over a 7 hour window broadcast wrestling from all over including UWF. Starting in the 60's I grew up with Crocketts and then in the 70's the old Georgia (Gordon Solie) Wrestling but when I saw UWF in the mid 80's, that was a whole other level. UWF was stacked. Good thing for Vince that the oil economy cratered in 87' killing the MidSouth/UWF or our conversation about present wrestling would likely be VERY DIFFERENT! RIP Dr. Death!
Story was back in MidSouth in the 80’s, at the live event Bill Watts would issue a challenge to anyone in the audience who thought they could compete against his wrestlers.

Doctor Death was the son Bill Watts WISHED he had. He was more of a chip off the old block than Eric, Joel, or Micah
Eric Watts STF was terribly underrated. They pushed him too quick but he could have been a championship contender if he had more experience.
@@MortonT1958 Well, Eric was of a slightly different build than his dad---more like a basketball player than a football player, but still powerful (I'm thinking like Drew McIntyre), so he could do more agility moves and not rely on his strength as much as Bill or Doc

Here's one for you guys that Kurt may not even know. Dr Death Flatened Dan Severn and pinned him in under 20 seconds when they wrestled at the NCAA championships. It was the Only year in college that Severm competed as a Heavyweight as he had come in 2nd to Lober from Clemson losing by a point in the NCAA Finals the year before 1 weight class down. If only there had been more money in early mma, it would have been real interesting to see if Doc could have had the same success Severn had. I don’t see why he wouldn’t have.
I’m from Oklahoma so Dr. Death was always a big deal for me as a kid growing up in the mid late 90’s. My dad told me so many stories about him.

Doc was a multiple time national D1 wrestling champ. A dude who Doc dominated in college went on to become a multiple time UFC champion.
Doc immediately took down Bart Gunn in their “fight”. They were then immediately stood up. What do you think happens in a real fight where Doc doesn’t have to let you get up after he takes you down?
Brawl for All was basically “Who’s the best brawler?” In that case, who gives a shit? Had they allowed grappling, Doc destroys everybody. Had they allowed kicks, Steve Blackman destroys everyone. Finals would have absolutely been Doc vs Blackman.

Sadly his credibility went in the Brawl For All when Bart Gunn koed him.
I think it was the injury he suffered in that match that derailed his push. Everyone "lost" in the _Brawl For All_ except Bart Gunn and ironically his career was the only one that *ENDED* due to a KO from Butterbean at *_Wrestlemania XV_*

Williams was a grappler, Bart was a boxer. Different combat styles.
@@D2Kprimeell injury aside it was a huge hit to lose. Yes others lost but they weren’t brand new guys who’s entire gimmick was going to be: I’m the toughest. I’m not saying it was recoverable, but it was bad. The truth is however I don’t think he was ever going to be a big star in wwf anyways. Not at that time anyways.

Sorry but steve William's 2 biggest advocates are Jim Ross and bill watts. That's all I need to know about a man... he also told rvd when he was a rookie that he thought he was slow because rob was shy and nervous. Joked to locker room about how he would love to see rob at 35 and they all laughed har har har.... steve was most likely 35 st least at the time in a shit organization locker room joking about a future all time great. Rob hit 35 and was steve even alive anymore ? Or did the roids stop his heart too?

That type of joking about rookies was common in All Japan (AJPW). It was a way to make the youngers "man up" because AJPW was no walk in the park, which was basically the "Salty Spitoon" of wrestling in the 1990s. RVD and Dr. Death ended up getting along not long after that. They used to smoke pot together, and Doc would help get RVD bookings in AJPW. Doc always spoke positively about RVD and how much he ended up growing in the business, so I think Doc "manning up" RVD at the time helped him.

He wasnt that guy.... not compared to many other guys. I'm sorry. He was strong. But there is a difference between strong and gifted athletes. And guys who can and will hurt you or impose their will.. dr death was just old as most of the dudes in brawl for all... he wasn't a fighter.

I was watching K1 and other real fights long time ago on different sport channels. And one time Dr Death appeared in a Match. I was like WHAAAAT! As a wrestling fan i knew him.
But he got his ass kicked fast..that was sad to watch. And i never saw him again in real fights.
He was in his 40's and was diagnosed with cancer going up against one of the best heavyweight kickboxers at the time in Alexey Ignashov in that fight.

Dude the guy who beat Dr Death was Alexei Ignashov. Dude was arguably the best heavyweight kickboxer in the entire fucking world at that time. Doc obviously took the fight for the paycheck since he was already sick and well past his prime.
