I used to work for Mencap. The level of training compared to similar organizations was outstanding. That initial training followed by shadowing, was continued once you became a fully fledged support worker. The first residence I worked in was awful however. Some of the staff where lovely but there were some hard nosed staff who appeared to be ring leaders (the good staff were frightened of them). I blew the whistle on one of those staff after witnessing abuse. When word got round it was me (and word does get around), I was hounded out. One of the ring leaders told me, "always look over your shoulder love and don't walk down any dark alleys" I was moved to another area and the staff were fantastic. The management were abysmal though. We were treated with little to no appreciation and one manager was such a bully, some really good staff members chose to move on.
i have never had anything like this happen to me, and i am supported by mencap. i'm going to assume the staff working there at the time did not give a crap, but this really is concerning. R.I.P buddy you will be missed. :(
My son was supported by a local Mencap in early childhood (before it closed due to funding issues) & they were very good. However, I would agree that this is concerning. Maybe in future, Mencap needs fundamental reform to be a whole lot more user-led?
I used to enjoyed going to mencap club and it when down hill in kent after coved and the volunteers got too involved and in my support plan and it was both our fault and didn’t see it and needs go back to way it by more addictive and at like volunteers and not to over careing and not to give there private numbers to meanber and at don’t blame one parson and it sometimes it both your fault and it needs sorted out by safe grading and not give out private numbers out on mencap neaws letters and at like volunteers and tell kcc it was my fault send rude texts to volunteers for not get my own way and told them it was both our and I only go back if they are fair and follow the rules by not over careing and not acted like staff and they give me confidence to moved on to do something else in kent and need to be better and more understanding and bongree and Iam glad I don’t go back and it needs to go back to way it

Its neither! Mencap is a care factory. Nothing has changed!
I knew Danny. I am a support worker, but I didn't support him. This was a real shock. RIP fella.
