I've owned 2 behringer pedals and neither lasted more than 2 years. I've owned around 30 different pedals over the years and they're the only ones that ever crapped out on me. You're better off spending a little more and getting quality
In a lot of other videos, the behringer sounded very different from the original, but not here. Just goes to show how much of it depends on how you record it, amps, how you play, etc.
Brilliant comparison video - fast transitions between the pedals mean you can really hear the differences (where there actually are any). I went for the Behringer since it nails the tone and is ridiculously cheap. I run it into a Bugera 1960 Infiium, which basically means I have the nearest thing to a Marshall JCM 800 and Boss HM-2 for a fraction of the price I'd have to pay for the out of production originals!
First time to see a vid wherein the same lick is played through each pedal. Wow! You deserve more subscribers bro. One of the best subscriber vids I've seen. Keep it up!
True German completist! Wonderful demos. This is how to do it. You have obviously put maximum effort into this project. Please feel encouraged to continue with your work. Cheers!
haha, dont call me german xD but thanks. jea its a hell of work and i can not imagine how other people can put out so much content. i'll continue doing videos and put the same effort in every single one, but it will take me more time between videos than on other channels. but thanks. im happy i could please you.
Now this is a pedal demo, *standing ovation*. The Arion was my fave, which is surprising. Thankfully, I own one, I’ve had it and my mij HM-2 for many, many, many years. I never knew it was a HM-2 “clone”. I’ve never run either pedal flat out dimed, ever, but I’ve known about the Entombed setting for years. I always thought the “every knob maxed setting” was a meme not to be taken too seriously. I realized though that it actually is a legit way of using these pedals. Honorable mention goes to the DOD Super American Metal for sounding almost exactly like an HM-2.
Thank you so much. Man i love that diy-pedalbuilder scene. I talked to a lot of nice people since I started and nearly everyone is helpful. I wanted to give something back. Thanks for enjoying.
...well keep that as a secret, but you vid decide me to go to the Behringer. I heard an harmonic in the feedback that I didn't head in any of the other pedals (and feedback is intro on all of our songs so...)
Arion for my ears is the best all round commercial pedal, The Swede is a little muted on the high end and has smoother bass, Chainsaw Cubed has nice smoother scooped sound I would most likely end building that one. I think if you got an original HM-2 Taiwan model and swapped out the caps and resistors it would be better than the Japanese model.
I have the original HM-2 and the Behringer and I must say, both are great and the Hm 300 is very close to the HM-2 . But there are some little differences: While the Behringer has a little bit more on the low side , means more bass , on the other hand the original is the original and sounds a little bit , well, "crunchier". You can use one on the left and one on the right side for recording, so you have two slightly different sounds , but with equal power . Maybe the HM-2 on the left, for parts, when just one guitar plays a riff and then the "bass-ier" sound of the HM 300 sets in on the right side. But there is another thing I noticed: The last time, I recorded some songs, I used a Randall V2 with a Marshall-speaker and for the other side a Crate-amp. On the V2 , the sound was "entomb-ishly" brutal , but with the Crate, It sounded nothing like the swedish chainsaw. Not bad, but not how I wanted or expected it.
Really nice video! I had the Metal master and the HM2 back in 1995, I used the HM2 as a booster. It would be nice if you could do a video using them together. The trick is to put the metalmaster with the distortion and low at full, and in the HM2 a little distortion, the treble at full and low to zero, you have to check the volume in the HM2 to not saturate too much. ;)
Your homemade strip board version has the most "wasps in a rusty pipe" sound. It therefore wins. No but seriously, I love it for black metal. Perferct.
Hah, great video. Strong influence form mr. Ballou's comparison but that's perfect! He was missing HM 300 which sounds excellent. Good work. As far as I know, in live situation, this type of distortion doesn't behave well with all the knobs maxed. I saw that Brian Izzi from Trap Them has his HM-2 dist set at 50% and L color slightly rolled off. Entombed A.D also has dist sets around 75%
Hey dude, have you watched the whole video? Its just the first two first riffs. And i used them that you can compare to the KB video. But all other riffs are different from them. So whats wrong with it? Cheers
Last one impressed me the most. Comes closer to a HM-2 with continuous 9V supply. My HM-2 doens't even work properly with the 9V BOSS supplies of this eara. Boss supplies back in the 90's were balanced.
original HM-2 needs an AC supply. you can overvoltage it with 12v dc or best is attach a 9v battery cap connector and wire on a 9v socket. the term "balanced supply" means nothing in English.
@@jjrusy7438 hmm... makes sense... I got my explanation from a shop owner 20 years back. you mean that the output is 12v ac? A bit weird if electronics mostly work on DC. Rectification is in the pedal itself then? I got a DS1 from back then and that one seems to work fine with a modern supply... Has it anything to do with the active eq of the hm2?
@@countk1 hi. The original mains supply was 9VAC. my pedal has another sticker on the back listing 4 models of 9VAC power supply, depending on your country's AC mains. Like Europe is 240VAC, USA is 120VAC etc. OK, the pedal circuit is standard DC biased, small signal processing. The old technology AC wallwart had to have the AC rectified into DC. If you put large enough DC to push through the rectifier circuit(every semi-conductor costs min0.7voltage drop per junction, and any series resistors drop some volts depending on how much current is flowing) you can get enough DC to run the pedal circuit. You can use this trick If you need to supply 9v to pedals and you only have 12V. you can series 4 rectifier diodes onto a 12V power supply. just run the diodes forward so they flow, but each one costs 0.7V so all 4 drop 2.8v. I did it with IN4007 cheap 1 amp diodes on a PC power supply for in my music room.
@@jjrusy7438 So I can just hook up a 12V DC supply and 2.8 volts are soaked up by the rectifier of the pedal? Or do I get this wrong? I actually hooked up the battery connector to the socket instead but it still doesn't work properly, I think due to voltage drops. Maybe my supply isn't strong enough? My status LED of the pedal sometimes dims and then it sounds like there"s a bad connection in the wiring, much like a bad instrument cable.
@@countk1 Hi. 9V DC should work to the battery connector, just like a battery. Does a 9V battery work correctly? Is polarity correct from your supply? On the pedal case outside, 12V DC can be put on the HM-2 power supply connector. If you put 9VDC on the external power connector, it is dim LED and the pedal does not function correctly, like what you describe. I use a standard 9VDC pedal supply to the battery connector, or a 9V battery and both work well. If you re-wired the connector to the battery wires, check that all other wires are disconnected from the power connector. There could be a path for electricity to flow and drop the supply voltage
As much as I hate behringers crap quality, they nailed the sound on this one. I like the Arion metal master, but they have a crappy sounding bypass buffer, and the plastic foot switch plate has a tendency to break.
You speak German? If so, why the soft "g" in Behringer? Very nice video. Your SWE CHAinsaw^3 sounds nice too. The Metal Master has a better edge in its lower mid frequencies than the others, but not as nice in the higher frequencies maybe.
The pedal at the last about which you mentioned that you did some mistake while assembling it, what exactly did you do? Can you somehow replicate the schematic of the flawed connections you made for that pedal? It seems accidentally you have created a pedal that would sound perfect for Black Metal. It sounds like the Black Metal equivalent of HM-2.
i strictly followed the plans here: tagboardeffects.blogspot.com/2014/05/boss-hm-2-heavy-metal.html . someone once saied that there is something not quite right. but with tons of other PCB's and clones on the market its a nice project, but just dial back the bass knob on any other HM-2 and you will get close to that sound.
The Behringer 300 is more accurate copy of the original HM2, but imo the metal master sounds better. It has crunchier mids and cuts through the mix better I think
If you have a Japanese original HM-2 you should check to see if it requires a 12v power supply, this is what it was originally built for and later redesigned to run on 9v,if you're runnin a 12 on 9 and switch to the proper p.supply youll hear the difference
basically you are right. The Boss HM-2 needs a 12V supply. But internally steps down the 12V to 9V by adding a resistor and a diode in series with the supply. With a simple modification you can run it on 9V. ( peperspedals.blogspot.com/2017/07/boss-hm-2-mod-make-it-work-on-9v-power.html )
I have an original HM-2. (623000, mfr Jan1986, Japan). It has a tiny sticker on it that says "USE BOSS ACA adapter ONLY". it says nothing about overpowering it with 12v DC. that just pushes through the rectifier circuit hard enough to run it. Now, I use a 9v battery connector wired to a standard 9v power jack. The 9V connection is inside the rectifier circuit, so that is a better, proper solution. The 12v DC is urban legend BS otherwise there wouldn't be a rectifier circuit for an AC supply
i know it doesn't match the hm-2 and maybe it's because i love crasher crust but i love the DIY stripboard's sound. noizzzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How does the 7th pedal, the Strapboard DIY, achieve these rich harmonics? What if one isn't set up to build one, just wanted to buy one already made, is that possible?
On the hm 2 schematic you will see D9 and D8 , on the original circuit they are silicon diodes , one of my favorite mod for this pedal , is to remove these two diodes , and wire a DPDT switch that can let you choose from silicon diode clipping (stock ) and LED clipping ( a little less distortion, but more volume and dynamic ). With de clipping LED's on , you will keep that chainsaw kind of sound but more natural and dynamic.
There's really not much difference of all these, lol, geez it seems like wasted time and energy obsessing over this "HM2" pedal, I've used various pedals and pretty much you just roll with it,or if you're not crazy about a certain pedal, buy a different one ,this whole thing is kinda funny,I've been playing metal for decades, and someone asked me just last month, about the HM box ,I was like ????,I dont think to hard about the names of pedals I just use them
Rogerio Sartori prices are pretty outrageous. Plus, in my country they are getting exported like crazy for profits. I have 2, a MiJ and a MiT version. MiT is way brighter.
Sorry, but this all knobs turned to eleven thing is a total meme. Nobody uses an HM2 like this, because it will sound like shit. Also, the hm2 runs on 12v which it then converts into 9v internally, so if its used with a 9v adapter it will also sound shitty unless it's modded.
Hey, thanks for the comment, but I have to disagree. You need a starting point to form your sound. When I play my hm-2 i start with all knobs full and decrease knob by knob to find my sound. This is the audio world dude, there is no right or wrong. This is how i do it. If you do it the other way, that's fine for me. In this video, i wanted to compare different pedals of the same kind. There are two ways to do that. The Kurt Ballou way of finding the best sound for every pedal, or in case of the hm-2 clones the "all on 11" setting. And as a starting point i dig the sound of almost all of the pedals. And dude, never say never. I bet there is at least one human being who just gives a shit and turns all on full and is super happy with the sound. If you like it? Dont get me wrong and no offense, but who cares if he is happy with it :D I thought about the voltage problem. Good that you point that out. I thought I made it clear, that you can (or should) run the pedals on higher voltages. As i've said, there is no right or wrong in finding your sound and i didn't want to stress myself, because it worked for me with 9volt so I've gone with them. I lent the MIJ hm-2 from a friend, of a friend of a friend. I have to find out if it was a modded one. But I don't think so. This video is just a little helper for people who are interested in building there own pedal and wondering if it's worth it and no "this is the sound and you have to do it this way or you will die" thing. Cheers.
Dismember used HM-2s with all the knobs maxed, so that "meme" holds true for one of the original bands who used them for over 20 years. Some bands max their HM-2s, some don't.
This is how comparison videos should be made!
- yes ;)

thats what i intended. you can spend crazy money on hm-2 clones, an i did xD , but it didnt made me a better or more brutal guitar player xD.
I'm getting the behringer.
Stupidly close the the hm-2 for a price of a sandwhich
Tobias TK my thoughts exactly
Way cheaper than the Arion too
Their differences are all so small it’s like... So what? The cost beats the rest
And if the Behringer casing breaks you can just buy it a new aluminum casing from a diy pedal site

You are the only other guy I know that has one of these byoc The Swede. That things a beast with original Japan HM2 parts.
the HM300 sounds almost as the HM-2 - if you reduce the 3rd knob a little bit, they would sound the same. Very good comparison dude!
As an owner of an HM300 I can certified that this is true! Cheers from El Salvador!
Because it's an HM-3 clone not an HM-2 clone

I just bot the Digitech Metal Master! Its pretty simular to the Arion. I will upload a vid on it at some point! Feel Free To check it out!
Good news is with Behringer owning Tc electronic we will now get the HM300 in a metal case. The Tc Electronic Eyemaster.

Mod one with a clipping switch to choose silicons and Leds for D8/D9 you won't regret it

Dont get me wrong and no offense, but who cares if he is happy with it :D
I thought about the voltage problem.
Cheers.
so much bullshit in 1 comment, wow
His or my comment?
his.. you are completely right :)
great video by the way!
Dismember used HM-2s with all the knobs maxed, so that "meme" holds true for one of the original bands who used them for over 20 years. Some bands max their HM-2s, some don't.
