Dal Baati is a classic Rajasthani dish! Here's a simple recipe to make this delicious and iconic dish:
Dal (Lentil Curry)
Ingredients:
1 cup split green aka moong dal
1/2 cup split Bengal gram (chana dal)
1/4 cup ghee or oil
1 small onion, chopped
1 small tomato, chopped
1 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
Salt, to taste
2 cups water
Fresh cilantro, for garnish
Instructions:
1. Rinse the lentils and soak them in water for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
2. Heat ghee or oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
4. Add the chopped tomato, cumin, coriander, turmeric, chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
5. Add the soaked and drained lentils, along with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.
6. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot.
Baati (Wheat Bread)
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 cup ghee or oil
1/2 cup lukewarm water
Instructions:
1. Heat a non-stick appe pan or a cast-iron skillet over medium heat.
2. Divide the dough into 8-10 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and then flatten slightly into a disk shape.
3. Place a baati on the heated pan and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
4. Repeat with the remaining dough portions.
5. Alternatively, you can also cook the baati on a gas stove or a charcoal grill.
Instructions:
1. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat.
2. Add the ghee or oil and let it melt.
3. Add the whole wheat flour and roast for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the mixture is lightly toasted and fragrant.
4. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
5. Add the powdered sugar, cardamom powder, nutmeg powder, and salt. Mix well.
6. Add the chopped nuts (if using) and mix again.
7. Let the mixture cool completely before breaking it into smaller pieces.
Serve the Dal, Baati,together for a delicious and authentic Rajasthani meal!
