Rig Rundown: Dirty Honey's John Notto

- Rock ’n’ roll has a long tradition of building on the work of previous stars and reinterpreting their influences. The Beatles honored the Isley Brothers, Elvis covered Little Richard … up to contemporaries like the Black Keys celebrating hill country blues beacons R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, and Greta Van Fleet echoing Led Zeppelin and Motown. Dirty Honey is reenergizing the hard-rock sound of the 1970s and sleazy Sunset swagger of the 1980s with their amalgamation of heroes that range from Prince and Queen to AC/DC and Guns N’ Roses.
Before Dirty Honey’s headlining show at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works, PG’s Chris Kies popped onstage to witness the power and might of guitarist John Notto’s Appetite-ish assault. Notto shows off a pair of old-soul Les Pauls, explains his intermittent two-amp approach (and where he stole it from), and we enjoy a treat encounter with a very special ’burst.

I saw Dirty Honey in Nashville on April 8th and John played that '59 all night, it sounded incredible, the whole band was amazing. If they're ever playing near you, I highly suggest going to a show, they are my favorite band making new music.
Hey man, saw them in Toronto where I live last month/March , you right, great show, they are pro all the way. Would Love to see them in Nashville, hope that to be my next destination.
I saw them in Atlanta open for the Black Crowes, it was a hell of a show
Mine too..!!!
They are amazing :)
@@VangeliRockJust saw them in NJ last week and they were amazing.
I swear when I saw Dirty Honey last year in OKC, John Notto had a little guitar solo with just him shredding on the stage, and that experience was completely overwhelming. I swear it was like watching Slash play EVH licks. Looking back on the experience, it felt like I was the only one in the room with the guy just because of how affixed I was on him. Not even lying, I’ll tear up if I talk about it enough😂😂
That guy is amazing :)
Been waiting for this for A LONG TIME!!! John Notto really has tremendous tone and, as far as contemporary rock players go, he really is one of the most gifted at improvised live solos
He’s a great guitar player :)
Just saw these guys play in London. I think John was just playing through the 1987x and he sounded phenomenal. Great band.
They need to come play in Europe :)
He has a great live tone, saw them open up for Black Crowes and they put on one hell of a show. Good stuff.
I went to a music fest last week where they performed. I got right up front,in the pit , in front of John and he was on fire the entire set.
Saw these guys a few times. They really have something special. Love John’s live tone. Hope they are around for the long hull.
They’re great :)
This is why they are the official band of the guitar dads podcast!! This is kick ass!
The Uni-Vibe mojo at 19:58... that's IT. Full stop. End of story. Run your 'vibe straight into the amp, kids!
Such a cool, nice guy. I hope he goes far. Thank you for this.
Killer tone and feel, Notto is the real deal!
Fcking love the idea of adding a whole amp for the solos! It must make the sound huge everytime the solo comes on!!!
That’s some dedication to his tone indeed :)
Don't know this guy but the second I see Les Pauls and Marshalls instantly this guy is cool in my book
Check out their music then lol 😂
Woooot! Love these guys! Thank you for this one!
Holy Mother of Righteousness…that 59
Damn how many Les Pauls did they make in 1959 seems there the holy grail guitars and everyone seems to have one
John sounds very grounded. I really hope he stays that way. I bought a 2022 Les Paul standard a few weeks back and having him
talk so highly of these new standards makes me feel better about not going with the Custom shop for $7K i originally wanted.
The standard was only $2700 which is a lot less expensive.
Just all around awesome. John is great. Love the guitars, the amps, cabs, pedals. He can really rock!
So you were shopping for picks and no one was waiting on you? Must have been at Guitar Center hahahahahaha but seriously, you have great tone and I love your bluesy 70's vibe style. Keep it up!
On February 2nd I saw Dirty Honey live for the first time in Antwerp,Belgium and was able to fully enjoy John's guitarriffs occasionally looking straight into my lens when recording..I was like holy sh*t,what a "Dirty" sound!!!🍯🎸🔝
Best band in rock right now. They’re all amazing musicians. Just saw them in Toronto.
Absolutely brilliant
John Notto is my guitar hero of 2022...
There is hope for our future
Excellent episode
Just saw them this last weekend in Ponte Vedra, FL. Didn't have the '59 but his tone is amazing. The whole band is fantastic and should be a lot bigger than they are. Hope their star continues to rise.
This is amazing!
What a cool kid. Just a fucking guitar nerd who loves gear and rock and roll.
So awesome..!!
I love this guys playing and basic old school aproach. There are still a few of us left who play real amps.
Very true :)
These guys are great. I saw them in Mobile a few months ago and was not disappointed.
Love John Notto. Saw these guys in Denver in February to kick off the young guns tour and they were phenomenal 🤘
Keep rockin’ boys.
I would love to see them live too :)
So much information....totally fun...!!!
Saw him yesterday. He and Marcus King - our saviours
Definitely band I wanna see live so bad! Hopefully next time they are in Nashville I’ll go for sure
I really like his taste and sound. I feel the same way about my 04 Gibson LP R8. Cool wheelhouse to be in John. You are my new guy to follow. I'm a Gary Moore fan. You have that raw flavor that's missing these days. Just listened to 'Fire Away'. Holy hell! Finally.
Love John sound old school
I have an original 87 Jubilee combo amp and yep, they're amazing, absolutely love it.
Sounds great :)
"if the feedback is not there, you don't have it". I can't disagree there.
Great rundown, never head of these guys, digging it.
I saw them love on the Black Crowes tour. These guys are great. None of the bullshit backing tracks silliness. Great song great vocals and great rock.
I just saw Dirty Honey in Orlando a few weeks ago and they were fantastic. I got a chance to speak with John very briefly backstage and he seems like a really good dude. This was the exact set up he was using and he played the tobacco burst that night. He never changed guitars. They are really a phenomenal band live as well as recorded. On a sidenote, his speaking voice reminds me so much of the timbre and cadence of Michael Sweet from Stryper.
Got to talk to 3/4 of the band couple years ago at merch table after their set, great guys and humble people
Dream rig🔥
Dang, great tone!🎸🎸🎸🎸
I saw dirty honey last night in Manchester, they were fan bloody tastic !!
😍😍 yes!!!
Please do an updated version for the can’t find the brakes tour!!!
Every guitarist has the same dad joke. The polytune is the secret to their tone. haha
This guy sounds great… Seems chill for a guy who knows and tours with rock stars…
the guy is amazing, saw them in manchester the other day!
That was fun.
i just saw dirty honey yesterday for the first time from that new boat movie and these guys are amazing..the guitarist has super yummy licks, but many times i can spot he stole lots of stuff from slash lol, just played slash licks backward etc...but amazing band, need to download their album
Yes!!
I saw these guys play headline a Mammoth gig in AZ. And holy hell it was loud, and it was awesome.
They take it to 11 at the Marquee
Got to talk to John Notto after a gig last year. Such a great dude! I had mentioned to him on IG when is there going to be a John Notto Dirty Honey burst Les Paul signature guitar. Lol
I don't think I've ever seen a compressor last in the signal chain before, after delay and reverb? Interesting.... might have to try it out!
This dude rules.
Mitch Hedberg is still with us!!! and now is playing guitar!
That LP sounds just like a vintage 59.. Gibson knocked it out of park with reissue
Sick
Ohhhh siii 🤘🤘🤘 DEBERÍAN PONER SUBTITULOS EN ESPAÑOL POR FAVOR.
He played rocket queen riff GnR at 17:21
Awesome sounding rig, but does Steven Tyler know you have his pants lol?!?
Never heard of Dirty Honey. Are they a newer group? I know they aren't Mud Honey but that's what comes to mind. This dude is fun and sounds great. Gonna give that band a listen.
What do you think of em?
Glad that 59 is being put to use instead of in a closet. That thing is 3D for sure
John fucking Rocks!! Nothing beats a Les Paul thought a Marshall push Greenbacks🤘🏼
Wolfie's rig coming anytime soon?
I would be super nervous about borrowing someones '59 LP. Just imagine the strap button coming off and it diving against the floor..
"Oh and Cesar something happened last night.."
The BIG question is: How is John getting that glorious vintage JCM rhythm crunch tone on his Marshall 1987 without either an attenuator/MV, gain pedal or added mod? Seem not feasible to get that tone without cranking it to the point of hearing loss :) and these guys are standing really close to the cab.
The 1987x breaks up really quick, and it's already nice and loud at that point :)
Easy answer.. he’s jumping the input channels together.. imagine that…🤔
Where can i buy those sunglasses?
That 59 is just…. Gahhhhh
A real 1959… as if he’s taking one of them around on tour. They are worth a fortune
Why not? Kirk Hammett toured with Greeny. 🤷♂️
@@Burnt_Gerbil I bet that guitarist isn’t a millionaire like Kirk who could afford to lose a 1959 or it get stolen
@@121music4life greeny is irreplaceable even for a millionaire. I don't know what's so unbelievable about him touring with a '59. He paid a fortune for it, he might as well use it.
does he tour with it? i thought it belonged to cesar and he just played it when in nashville.
@@cosmikrelic4815 yeah I think that's the case after rewatching the video.
What he really needs is a Noise Gate
Blasphemy
Naaaah! Hum is where the tone is, bro
I wish could have a shout out to.......
Thats a cool rig !!! and My God A REAL '59 burst !!!
It's a travesty that you guys still haven't done a rig rundown for Mickey Melchiondo (Deaner) of Ween.
9's and especially 8 gauge strings won't break and are much easier on your hand. People should know that the thiner the string the less tension so you can do anything you want to them. The only catch is you can't press as hard on the fretboard or they will bend slightly out of tune with high frets
9s on the tele and strat but 10s on the Les Paul is the way to go. Dont know exactly why people like anything higher but to each their own, thats why the guitar is such a personal instrument!
He's a "Keeper".
anyone else anxious about the straight jack coming out of the ‘59?? 😬
dude said "the glue drying in a certain way".Not saying he's wrong, but I don't think I've heard that one before.
how do you get all those pedals into 1 amp and not loose youre signal chain i love his blusey hendrix vibe good guy it seems ace is why i play my paul through a marshall just like slayer maiden clapton evh rip the list is endless good luck to youre band stay safe rock on
Buffers are your friend. I've run 10+ pedal chains that had no audible loss because of good input and output buffers. Also 5 pedals is not a lot
@@ileutur6863 im not sure what a buffer is i have 2 jcm 800 heads 1 for backup into a vintage 30 cabinet and pray nothing goes wrong loool after ace lynch was my hero i met him and ace back in the day lynch had a effects rack refridgerator full of shit me im a simple guy too each there own
@@davidmarshall385 buffers basically boost your signal. A pedal that's buffered bypass instead of true bypass will do it.
@@DrewPeabaws roddy ty im still confused as i am just a plug in and wail away kinda guy a les paul into a marshal jcm 800 old school
I use a loop switcher that sends my guitar straight to amp, or through loops of pedals
OK I’m old but I never heard of this guy or his band
I thought he is playing Drums in Limp Bizkit and will take us to the Matthews Bridge?
man i love the hum. some people are bothered by them but i think it's part of rock n roll. i hate noise gates hahahhaha
Haha I hear ya man!
17:07
Playing through digital pedals ruins the sound for me. I like the tube sound direct.
The placebo effect really is something huh
I agree, I wish he had those les Paul’s running straight thru the amp. That’s what I enjoy most about having a tube amp imo
Did those pants come with a zucchini wrapped in tinfoil?
The jack on the 58 reissue has been replaced. Should have come in plastic.
Really great to see a younger player that is into TONE instead of dimeing everything and gaining the shit out of something and playing a one finger chord in a C tuning and calling it guitar playing....He could really use a Decimator...or a good noise gate!! That stage noise has to GO!!!
Since when did ozzy Osbourne play guitar
Why oh why would anyone loan a 59 to anyone else for any reason much less let some guy club tour it? Holy Jesus that’s dangerous!
Because they’re supposed to be played? lol
There's no way a Silver Jubilee could sound so shitty !!! There must be a sound recording problem... This 1987 has a great sound compared to the 2550.
So noisy wow! Enlist Dave Friedman dude!
You need noise gate. You break global sound with your noise.Ok Les Paul and Marshall are classics of course. But clean sound is a lot better.
I don’t know how he has dialed in his gear, but that sounds terrible. Such nice components and then such a bad fizzy and bad sound.
Than the best LP in the universe is useless…
And the Jubilee?? What the hell did he do with it? One the worst sounds I’ve ever heard. Please, call Joe B. And let him show this guy how dial in the Jubilee.
I think the Jube is only used as a solo feature, not as any kind of base sound? It sounds like it’s focused at a precise frequency, to compliment the 1987 and provide boost and cut for soloing/leads. By itself the Jube is lacking body and sweetness and very piercing with the harsh frequency it’s set to, but I guess that is where the 1987 is sitting?
@@Sean0780 hm, honestly I don’t think so. When you hear Joe Bonamassas Rig Rundown, the SJ always sounds round and full by itself. never harsh or piercing. I guess it has a lot to do with the way it’s dialed in. I have the SJ myself and there’s a huge difference in sound depending how you dial it in.
Dude, PLEASE buy a noise gate.......
Nah, get that nerd BS outta here 😂
Aerosmith rip off
