It sounds to me as if you've never been outside London. In a big city, small cars are an advantage as parking spaces are so limited. In Lagos (where I lived for five years), fewer people have cars, and big cars are a way to show off your wealth. In the UK, people most usually don't show off their wealth, but tend to keep a low profile.

The best thing they ever did was ban smoking inside public places.

@@_reetahh You can't smoke inside any public place, or workplace anymore, not even in company vehicles. Apparently only about 15% of adults in the UK are smokers now, I remember back in the 80's almost everybody seemed to smoke.

I worked with a Nigerian and she was completely stunned to discover that some children don't take their father's surname. She felt this was really disrespectful. Always interesting to learn what other cultures do and don't do.

If you remain in the UK, I’m sure you will notice many things which are different here than back home. An English person in your country would have culture shocks too. I have travelled quite a lot in my life and I can tell you, the differences are what makes travelling so exciting (as well as frustrating, lol.)ps: plastic bags fill waste dumps and take hundreds of years to rot, so our government did something to reduce it. Are you living in London, btw? Have fun. Jeff

As a Brit, this was so entertaining and interesting. There are so many videos on here, by Americans and other Europeans and their impressions of the UK, which are all pretty much the same. This had some fascinating differences, and some of them very unexpected. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the British referred to as demonstrative and affectionate, which makes a nice change. As someone who travels to the European continent quite a lot, I was interested to hear that you think we smoke a lot, as that is one of the things I find hard about travelling over there, particularly in Southern, Central and Eastern Europe. We smoke a lot less than them, so it was interesting to hear your perspective. So many people are, nowadays, about how cars have grown and grown in size, so I was amused to hear you describe them as tiny. They seem to have got bigger and bigger, here, whilst our parking spaces and tiny roads have stayed the same. People also have big concerns about how much fuel the bigger cars burn and how that contributes towards our carbon emissions. It is actually very rare, though, to see a car, nowadays, with only front doors (unless it is a Smart car, made specifically to fit into tiny spaces in the cities). I don’t think I’ve seen a 2 door car for a long time. Thank you, though, for an interesting perspective, and I’m sure you will find the many different accents easier to understand with time.

As a foreigner, I found some things different. For the smoking part, we hardly have people smoking publicly in my country so that’s why it was a shocker for me on getting here. Same thing for the cars, yes not all cars in the Uk are small but I’ve seen a few tiny and two door cars which I’ve never seen from my country… I’m pretty much adjusting to everything now 🙂
@@_reetahh, some things you will find are very different away from the big urban centres - where I live it is considered rude not to nod and say hello when you pass people in the street, or when you go into a shop. I find it very strange, when I go to London, that people walk past you in the street and ignore you. If you go up North or to the far South West, people behave very differently towards each other. It’s worth taking some time to go and see some different areas - ‘please’ and ‘thank you are’ expected wherever you go in the UK, so those, along with a smile should ensure you a friendly welcome if you do get a chance to see some other areas.

Interesting video. If you moved here to America you would see the same culture shock except 1. Our roads and steering wheels are the same as yours. (Drive on right, steering on left) 2. We mostly drive big cars and vehicles here too. 3. Weather varies here according to what part of America. Some areas are similar to UK some areas get much hotter some get much colder. In US however hot areas have lots of air conditioning everywhere. 4. I think we have less smoking here in US. but can’t say for sure. Most public areas are none smoking here though.

@@_reetahh Come visit us here in Atlanta. It's an overlooked city but it has alot going on and a large African community. Including Nigerians, Ethiopians, Kenyans, Sudanese and more.

Just as English people have accent’s which are difficult for you to understand. English people may find your accent difficult to understand. It’s just part of life.

I'm British and I find some British accents difficult to understand, especially if they speak really fast, I once spent 3 hours loading my truck with a Glaswegian, we had a great conversation, but didn't understand a word he said except the odd footballers name.

I spent 9 years in the armed forces. You mix with people from all over the UK as well as people from other (commonwealth?) countries. Spending so much time together accents blended into something everyone could understand, a sort of meeting in the middle. My wife worked in a hospital and often there were doctors with strong accents talking to patients with a different strong accent, she had to act like an because she could understand both versions of accented English. She did not change what was said, just repeated it, in a less strong accent so that the other person could understand it.

Was it a whey strainer you wanted in the shop? It can be difficult being understood when so many English words sound alike. Shame the shop assistant didn't have a bit more about her to ask you to write down what you wanted or to listen more carefully.
My son and his family have been living in Nigeria for 18 months. They are experiencing Nigerian culture and finding it interesting. My granddaughter loves her little Nigerian friends and speaks with the same rhythm in her voice.
I think that in the main we Brits are a friendly bunch and I hope you get used to us!

You don’t have to say thank you to the bus drivers. It’s a personal choice. Also you can get Uber and taxi’s in the UK. You also use apps to book them.

Many's the time I've not said thanks to bus drivers. In fact bus drivers in the UK often seem a miserable & surly lot, not universally. They do meet with all kinds of customers who are perhaps more demanding & problematical than they used to be. I'm speaking about buses in small towns/villages outside of London btw and not referring to the any culture issues etc

I’ve heard a case where the bus driver harassed someone for not saying thank you. I’ve also seen a comedy video where they tried to imitate a bus driver and a passenger in a brawl cos he didn’t say thank you.
That’s why I spoke about it.
I think it’s polite to say thank you tho, everyone is going through a lot, your “thank you” might make someone feel seen or appreciated. 🤗
You are very VERY wrong about getting plastic bags at the ggrocery store. There should be many more shops and Countries that do not give out plastic bags..., including Nigeria. This was a comment that was not neccesary and really annoyed me!!
I am here hoping I will find out a bit more about Nigeria as all Nigerians I have met are all nice guys, (and easy to understand)!

@@_reetahh Haha. I thought this was funny. Here in Canada, people were also a little shocked when free plastic bags were slowly phased out at grocery shops in the early 2020s. Now most folk bring their own re-useable bags or have to buy re-useable bags from the shop. Sometimes shops offer paper bags, but for heavy items they suck! It's all for to reduce plastic in the environment, which I do understand and can appreciated.

The plastic bag thing is for environmentalism. It’s a waste of plastic so we discourage people from taking plastic bags by making them pay 🤷♂️ if people choose to bring reusable bags to the shops then that’s a good thing 😂

There is a variety of cars in the UK. Big and small. They aren’t all small.

Price of petrol in Nigeria was about £0.35p / litre in Jan 2024, so I read. No wonder big cars are not a problem there. Here it's 5 almost 5 times the price.

I don't understand the big deal of calling someone by their name. As a British Nigerian i respect culture but calling someone uncle or aunty doesn't mean you respect them. Who knows what goes on behind their back 😅 it's not that deep
