I love this, the original and also SR’s cover of the song. This one feels more faithful to the original even down to the vocals, but I feel like we need them both in this world. What an amazing showcase for the capabilities of the YM2612. I can only imagine the look on a Yamaha engineer’s face looking at what their soundchip can produce! I’d love a deconstruction of this
You made the Sega Genesis ACTUALLY SING. I can't wait for the guys who made the Chipspeech app to get ahold of this. Maybe they could call the result Meggy or Genny?
the thing is that the Genesis has 4 ways to make voices (only 3 are documented too) so it'd probably be hard to implement such a thing in a way chipspeech does
@@GENATARi It shouldn't be that hard honestly. The Sega Genesis is much easier to manipulate into making a specific sound than most other FM synths, and tbh I figure things like SAM and the IBM 704 were much harder to make talk than something with a total of 18 operators for sound.
@@ShwappaJ Most of those machines used samples for their speech. This is completely possible on the Genesis, but synthesizing it on the FM channels (saves heaps of space!!) is a massive undertaking.
Alright, Imma be the one to say it. I just went back and gave Savage’s cover another listen, then gave this one another listen... Your cover is much better. By a respectable amount. In fact it’s so good, it might even be better then the original song. Everything is extremely crunchy, poppy, full on the entire range of mids lows and highs. The overall rhythm is somehow even better. It sounds as though there 12 channels playing at once sometimes. This almost doesn’t even sound like a Genesis song. I know the FM voices might be off putting to some, but I don’t care... it really just adds to the song. This is a technical marvel. You didn’t just hit it out of the park... you obliterated it. I literally started laughing at times listening to this because I could not believe what was coming out of the 2612.
Alright i will write another comment then.. I also went ahead and gave Savage's a listen, and it almost sounds tone-deaf in comparison. You have a beautiful understanding of the music language that not many others are gifted with.
@@GENATARi I made a Sega Genesis voice with my The Beautiful Power remix, but it's just a default "aah" sound. Your remix has actual words, though tbh I couldn't understand anything it said. I just know it was singing SOMETHING, and that's still better than "aaaaah aaah ah aaaaah"
i didnt even know it was possible to make the genesis talk! this is nuts! also, this kick is JUICY! only think i think could use some work, is that some of the notes/intervals are off by a bit, which Savaged's cover gets a lot more closer to, in terms of staying true to the source material. but dude. making the bloody thing SING kinda makes up for any pitch shortcomings imo. incredible work!
This sounds incredible. Out of curiousity, I had some questions (I don't know anything about Megadrive). So the FM channels are Yamaha synth, but what does PCM and SN 1 to 4 mean? Is PCM like modern PCM? But limited to megadrive memory?
SN is a chip to keep compatibility with the master system i.e the master systems's sound chip which can play at the same time with the YM chip. PCM is like modern PCM but limited by the CPU speed and memory and is played through the YM chip
@@GENATARi Oh I guess that's why the PCM is shown on one of the FM channels. Feel like I just got a reply by a celebrity, this is on my walking playlist.
This is incredible! At first I thought the speech was the product of CSM + some noise for consonants, but clearly that's not the case as it's on channels other than 3. At what rate are you updating the chip? Some of those waveforms look like the result of >60Hz updates, but I honestly have no idea.
This speech was created with SSG-EG which is an undocumented feature of the chip which basically acts like CSM but doesn't repeat at a specific frequency. Instead it repeats when the ADSR envelope is finished so you control pitch by the length of the ADSR
you have officially become a new YM2612 master
Jesus. Christ. The vocals are out of this world. I already knew the Genesis was nice for Psytrance music but this is next fucking level.

okay and i thought savaged regime's cover was good but holy shit.
SSG-EG engineering.
If it is possible, could you so Pink Nightmares by Infected Mushroom? I always thought that those two flow into each other so incredibly well
