On the point of "is there a subsection of the community that's mortified by the news that they're decoupling pvp from pve?" I'm personally someone who is more excited for pve than pvp, and the way I see this decision is not that pve is getting pushed back, but that pvp is getting pushed forward, if they were still coupled, I would be getting both way later. Basically the pvp content is something to tide me over until pve comes out.

Ya i think they are very underrating the impact of PvE could possibly be. You could argue that the story missions and stuff would be the biggest draw for new players for ow2. If blizzard does it correctly and makes it fun and addicting to playthrough i could see that being the case.
I am more of a multiplayer type of gamer, i do enjoy versing real people and trying to be better than them. But at the same time we have played ow for like the past 5 yrs, i wanna see how PvE is like, especially playing through it with some friends and how fun it could be

This is pretty much my feelings exactly. I'm looking forward to both pretty much equally and am just happy to get some content, however that may come.
I like this take a lot. Its perhaps optimistic, but I choose to sit with this perspective. I love PvP, but a fleshed out PvE sounds so hype.
What about "Clonk" as a name for the robot? one syllable, onomatopoeic name, suits the big metal lad. im just afraid everyones gonna call him "bot"
I'm one of the weirdest Plat Chat listener, I honestly stopped enjoying playing OW years ago, but still very much watching OWL and following the league. I tend to prefer cooperative to competitive multiplayer because I don't have the patience to get good at a single game, and mostly play story focused games these days.
On that point, I may be the one person who is a bit bummed that the PvE got separated (which I keep reading as delayed). With so little information on the PvE/Campaign though, it isn't that big of a blow. I would rather wait for it to be good, then it get rushed and being disappointed.
I haven't played OW since the OW1 beta. Watch the OWL and plat chat though
I think it's gonna be a 6 month beta, the beta is used to help balance and debug for OWL, and we get OW2 around OWL 2022 finals.

As Seagull said in the first episode of your Overwatch 2 podcast, anything less than the number of heroes we would have gotten at the year 1 pace of new heroes is completely unacceptable. Overwatch 2 *NEEDS* to launch with a bare minimum of 3 new heroes per year since Echo was released. And that's a BARE MINIMUM.
I'm huge in competitive. I live and breathe it. But I'm also super bummed about a delayed PvE. I'm a big fan of the Borderlands games and others like it so I was really hyped for the release of a story mode Overwatch.
Facts
You _could_ always limit the streamer drops to less than the demand you expect, then make the OWL stream generous in giving the drops.
People will then naturally watch OWL to get the drop faster, while casuals sticking to the streamer will still get them.
I can see the pace of push being similar to CTF in OW. A Constant push and pull, fighting for space across the entire map but without the gimmicky mechanic of forcing the winning team to send players back to run the flag.
I can confirm I am pretty disappointed that the PVE isn't being included in the Beta. Even just a few missions. I don't expect a full game, but at least something. After playing it at the last in-person Blizzcon, I was hyped. Being able to play co-op with friends without the stakes of pvp is nice after a long day of work.
must have been crazy to go to blizzcon 2019, feel all the hype of overwatch 2 and diablo 4 being revealed, play a pretty much completely finished ow2 PVE map including finished cinematics and voice lines and then finally hear about a beta announcement not even including the stuff you played 3 years later lol
I get the sense that most OW players think the PvE will be similar to what it has been... but I cant help but think it will be way more akin to a whole separate game like Borderlands 3 or something. (not in terms of style, but mechanics, missions, skill trees, etc.)
One thing I was wondering about Push was if it will result in the fastest OWL games when a good team gets put against a bad team. Does the bad team just lose 3 or 4 fights and the map is over in three minutes? How long does it take to push the bot from the middle to the last checkpoint if one team is steamrolling?
As far as the drops from watching OWL and Twitch go all they have to do is have drops exclusive to either one which incentivizes watching both.
i'm the junkenstein crack addict jaws was talking about :( i love ow pve and i was really excited for ow2 pve. it's a big disappointment that the pve isn't going to be in the first release of ow2, but im holding out hope that when it does come out it'll be amazing and worth the wait

I rarely touch pvp games anymore and pretty much only play class based pve games (ROR2, Gunfire Reborn), but i think decoupling pve and pvp is the best decision they can make. I know Halo did something similar with releasing pvp first, and the story mode later. So I hope OW follows that, with having a free pvp update, and charging for a pve game. I can wait as long as needed for pve but the game NEEDS something to stay afloat, and a pvp beta will help with that.
I can see a team figuring out something early but it not working later on as people figure it out so i can see why a team would want "less" time

An idea: Beta access drops are handed out both during OWL and Sanctioned OWL co-streams, the VCT has many of the biggest VLR streamers co-streaming. A similar atmosphere can be formed around OWL

The way it's phrased sounds like beta access is given out through sign-ups and not through streamer drops, and that it will only be available in a limited period at a time when they say ''a series of closed beta tests''
I think they’re gonna do beta windows during the time between now and release, not a continuous beta. That should keep the interest up with minimal additions over a longer period of time. OW1 is gonna be dead in the water, probably even more so than it already is, but at least we’ll have something to look forward to while we play other games
They said that in the press release, so that is definitely the case.
Ow1 is gonna get essentially shifted over to ow2 too. So they'll slighty change graphics (to make it somewhat match ow2 changes), make it 5v5 too and you'll be queuing in games with ow2 players as well

Regarding Josh's question between drops for streamers or OWL, why wouldn't you just make it so during OWL hours, you can only get beta keys from OWL and any other time big streamers can drop the keys? So it's not like a hard draconian rule, but viewers are gently encouraged to go watch the OWL stream (but streamers can keep streaming if they want to during those times)
Yeah I don’t want this game to be anything like fortnite or unpolished like CoD, battlefield, halo infinite. Being the most vibrant and dynamic PvP game doesn’t just mean nonstop content
I feel like my biggest issue with hero pools was it completely lowered the ceiling of play, teams didn't have time to really refine comps and strats and execute them on a peak level, while I get ppl didn't like watching year of goats etc. the progression and evolution of the comps and how good teams got at them was entertaining for me, it put more value on strats, teamplay and coaching, which is really the main difference with a professional team and a top player on ladder.
I really like that pros are only getting 2 months on OW2. This is going to feel like a brand new esports and teams that used to be good may be bad if they can't adapt. Also vice versa we have no idea what bench player is going to understand the new game play better than a 2x champion and take his spot. This is super exciting.

this was mostly in 2018 and 2019 that these reports occurred, I do not know if the practice continued past or not

Wait, Blizz should throw together an invitational OW2 Beta Contenders tournament where the top few teams from each region play against each other. It's content for OW2, it's content of Contenders and it also gives these players the chance to scrim on the beta as a team when they probably wouldn't have gotten the opportunity before.
Still think that between each OWL tournament there will be a new beta with a new hero and new maps. And then the full PvP release at the end of the season.
When Aaron said hey "decoupled" the PvP from the PvE, my immediate thought was PvP is going free to play.
I think its more the ow community has been starved for the last 2+ yrs on ow2 news rather than nobody cares about PvE not being available. We are all so thirsty for any kind of news that once finally they actually announce at least a beta is finally happening, we r just happy for anything

As far as concerns go, I feel like people being upset with the decoupling of PVE is dwarfed by the people who just want content. I think there is a much larger group of frustrated people out there mad that the beta won't be on consoles. I can see that being the narrative of the year.

I wish there would be a control map (KOTH - King of the hill) style map where there are 2 contestable points.
I feel like it will force team to make some touch decisions to split up the team or go all in to win.

I’m massively disappointed about the shift away from pve, that’s what I took away from the announcement. I’m a WoW player and knowing that the OW dev took a look at WoW dungeons and raids made me hype because those guys make amazing dungeons and raids it’s pretty much what keeps that game alive and to have that in OW made me very hype

The reason you probably haven't and won't see a surge of pve ow2 rage is they saw the news and just shrugged and umsubbed from ow2 news went back to playing whatever thier flavor is of pve action shooter. I follow owl as a sport, I don't play ow. I thought I might play the pve just to support the product but oh well I was never that committed.
I think how they talk about it and “package it can change how people feel about it. I think Blizzard needs to talk more about why they decided to go OW2 instead of just updating OW. I think there is new infrastructure that is going to allow this to be a live game that we won’t see, and hopefully this will justify why they made a “new” game

OW2 is going to go the exact same way as the sequel game in free guy. Super hype, lots of controversy, but when there are bugs and this doesn't have the polish of their other past releases, this will expose that the Blizzard Era is over. Kinda sad because I've wanted this game for years, but my expectations are so high at this point there is no way they can deliver.
Also needing to cut out PVE to get a beta going is the scariest part to me. They don't have enough talent or resources left to pull it off sadly.

To Avast’s point about having blackout periods for streamers, one way you could do it is have a “key match” on like Saturday or Sunday and during that match no one else can stream. Or if you do the key drop system for the beta maybe keys only drop on the OWL channel during that match and then keys are everywhere again afterwards.
So you think a new ping system, 4 new maps and a new hero along with many reworks is just an update? As a hopium based person I wouldn't agree. On top of that there is 5v5 which is a fundamental change that should make the game feel different as well.

I think you should just have OWL have drops at the start, then after a week or stage, start specifically letting popular streamers be able to be watched to get beta keys.

40:27 I'm sorry that is brain-dead. BF3 was phenomenal and BF4 had a rough start, and even after all the patches it still was dissappointing after what came before. BF4 was just fortunate to be on more recent hardware, BF3 had the better ideas and premise. If they both had the fortune of being released with the same hardware and everything, BF3 blows BF4 out of the water. Time IS a factor. And OW has had no shortage of that...

I hope someone voices the concerns or they fix the issues with crossplay it could be so fun but they absolutley ruined it. When they take away aim assist on controllers they fucked it up so hard. Might as well not even allow crossplay with pc.
How is it so hard to believe that people really are looking forward to PvE that are playing OW1 now? The PVE events when they first came out were wild and very fresh. Pvp will always be trash, PvE has hopium potential.
I think the lack of disappointment we've seen about the PvE being delayed beyond the PvP is proof of what many have said: no one really cares about the PvE because no one asked for it. This has been a PvP only game save for some mediocre event modes. Everyone who cares about overwatch cares about it for the PvP. Will it be an interesting mode to play sometimes? Sure. I'll definitely try it when I wanna shake things up. But for the vast majority of the community, the game could not have PvE and we wouldn't notice a difference
So for most of us, including myself, this is just all the PvP content that should have been drip fed over the last 2 years of content drought
like half the comments on this video are talking about how much they are excited for the PVE portion of the game as self-professed junkenstein crack addicts, and this is a strictly competitive overwatch based podcast, so imagine how many more casuals there are that aren't in competitive overwatch circles that the game will bring in as dedicated PVE players - half my friends who used to play overwatch from 2016-2019 come to mind.
i've also heard all over casual channels/the main overwatch subreddit from people that just love the lore but simply aren't competitively minded enough to enjoy more than a few games of even quick play or arcade modes that say they would love a PVE experience that rivals Destiny's campaigns, which after playing Destiny with my bf i'm pretty sure that won't be a hard barrier to cross.
I would personally prefer less meaningful updates if that helps to keep Overwatch what it is and if everything can be kept under control and well-balanced. Even small changes and updates can refresh the game and help to keep steady use from many players, even skins and various free-access content like maps, game modes and events. That helps and does not risk to ruin the game
It also doesn't risk to make the game become back to being super successful either, though. Low risk, low reward. Low reward, content eventually stops coming anyways.

I remember a stat from a previous cod title where it turns out 70% of the ppl who bought CoD never touched the multiplayer. But if your on youtube and follow cod content etc you'd never know and you'd just assume that the majority of ppl play PvP
Like i for one am a more multiplayer type of gamer. I prefer going up against real ppl rather than programmed ai. But even I am slightly more excited to try the PvE content than PvP. We've all been playing ow1 for like 5 years or so now, yes its 5v5 now instead of 6v6 so 2 less players per match, but theres only going to be one new hero, couple more new maps, possibly some new reworks of old heroes to make them fit 5v5 better (we dont even know any of this yet either, so they could/might just block those heroes from even being playable during the beta) so these betas might just feel like a patch update so PvE might be more interesting to ppl. If they can implement PvE correctly i would love trying to go through the story missions with friends and just relax and have a fun time
