In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I dive into the worst-case climate change scenarios that could possibly lead to societal collapse. Specifically, I understand what the literature says will happen above four degrees of global warming in turns of natural disasters, as well as how that will unfold across our economic and social webs.

@@demus89 You hadn't mention nuclear fusion, which is what the sun and stars do.
I am not an engineer, but all I've seen so far required a lot more energy going in than coming out, and by a rather huge factor.
Fusion is about fusing hydrogen atoms to meje tem become the next element on the periodic table, helium.
This requires temperatures equivalent to the inside of the sun, which can melt anything in a blink, hence the use of very intense magnetic fields, that requires a lot of energy to produce and maintain.
75 years is a long way away, specially at this accelerating warming rate.
Then, since we live in a capitalist realm, competition will do all it can to impair the process.
They've been doing this ever since we have nuclear reactors with tons of scary propaganda, which is why Germany for one, closed all it's nuclear power plants and burning (very profitable) fossil fuels.
There's a lot to take into account on issues like this.
In conclusion, IF nuclear fusion reactors can be achieved, it does not mean they will make it in the marketplace.
Current capitalism is very happy with the way things are going. Disasters means rebuilding, means more profits.
SRM or carbon capture also mean a lot more profits for a very long time. I don't think they want to get off that gravy train. They will do everything necessary to stay on it. 🤑🤑🤑

Their projections of a warning globe were linear, bit as we now see, the more the earth heats up it begins to run away at one point getting faster and faster.
An analogy would be the melting of polar ice caps. The ice caps are reflecting huge amounts of electo magnetic radiation, but the more they melt the less reflective surface there is to reflect the incoming radiation. This means that the remaining ice melts faster than the ice before it did due to more radiation being absorbed by the oceans, heating up the ice faster.

Personally, I am doing everything I can to reduce my climate impact. I currently use 0.6tons CO2 per year according to the WWFs climate calculator. But then there are systematic issues I cannot control (outside of trying to influence people and political discourse). Swedish society -where I live, uses 3.2tons per person. Which takes me to 3.8tons, 0.3tons above the Paris Agreement target. The amount of compromises is something that very few are willing to do... But to me, it's actually enjoyable
    Things I do:
    - I don't purchase... anything, really... except food
    - I use my clothes for 20+ years and I repair them. I see every purchase as a "lifetime purchase"
    - I'm vegan, I eat after season
    - I bicycle everywhere
    - I don't own a car, I rarely use public transit even, except the really cold months.
    - I avoid purchasing products with unnecessary plastic packaging, and if I do, I often re-use them, like bread bags and such.
    - I live in a small studio apartment that has an exceptionally efficient heating solution.
    - The only thing I purchase is new computer parts every 10 years or so. (which is also required of my job as a developer). These days I tend to salvage used parts instead.
    - I also ghetto-mod furniture that are being thrown away.
I actually don't feel like I can do much more individually. I really love living like this, living in accordance to my morals. I just wished more people wanted to do the same. You kind of feel like an alien on your own planet not understanding how other people think, especially considering the long-term effects of our inaction. When I have more time on my hands I will try to engage more in volunteer work, and try to inspire people. Currently I am volunteering for a group called "Repair Café" where we support people to repair their the things they own (instead of buying new), while talking about topics such as "reduce, reuse and repair". :) It has become highly popular in my hometown.

So many people did that that it completely erased my contribution and so much more. Half of US greenhouse gas emissions now are due to immigration since 1984. They had lots of children and immigrants need houses, jobs, food and everything else, their greenhouse footprints are much larger than the footprint of people already established there.

      Collapse

  • @severdislike4222
    @severdislike4222 2 місяці тому +19

So I've been working on a little writeup project involving the likelihood of a US collapse and the term "Rotted through" comes to mind. As for the why -
1.) Agricultural monocultures & factory farming and the environmental devastation necessary to support their current forms (Contaminated ground water, eradication of top soil, insecticides as toxic as DDT, runoff red tides, and the profit incentive and behaviors around "Cash crops. This doesn't touch on the lunacy that is lawn grass)
2.) Infrastructure decay caused by privatization. (According to a DOE & NERC assessment in 2010, the national energy grid have been getting 3% to 5% less stable annually, not better.) This doesn't even touch on how decayed the mass transport networks are. Rail accounts for 40% of all shipped goods and 50% of all bulk goods transport in the USA (Association of American Railroads, an industry trade group) and are also increasingly prone to catastrophic failures. This trend continues throughout other essential infrastructure such as the interstate system & just general fking housing since the opening of the floodgates to extractive investment entities like blackrock in 2008. Can add cost cutting onto that for air travel too with the ongoing Boeing debacle.
3.) The destruction of communities, isolation, and alienation. The vast majority of "modern" places of coexistence/congregation are extractive in nature (Work sites, bars, clubs, restaurants, even churches.) and the interactions taken with society outside of those locations are often rage inducing (see - cars/traffic) then only having "individual responsibility" peddled as a viable solution creates crushing levels of isolation. There is a reason the US's self-termination rate is nearing that of japan....

He knew if it was written as a kind of predictive non-fiction book that people would question all the scenarios - however by incorporating the bad scenarios into a dramatized story with believable characters to identify with, his message is much easier to take note of - and for some skeptics to swallow !

Underground. Temperature is constant there. Start building underground shelters for heatwave management. Make them very large with vertical ventilation shafts so they don't heat up due to body heat. Add water tanks to ensure water stays cool without needing power for refrigeration, cos we're going to need the power and water for light and emergency hydroponic supplies.
We can do that. We can. We *aren't* because we're not waking up to what we'll need to do for summers going forward. But we could.

I study environmental science, and this video is pretty much spot on. The Earth's average temperature is 15C so 2C higher is huge, but its not 2C higher equally across the planet for example 1.5C warmer is equal to 3-4 degree's higher in the Arctic and northern Europe. The IPCC reports is an invaluable resource in understanding whats going on across the globe, but it is the conservative model the numbers are on the low end of predictions for example the 1.5C warming limit was suppose to be that in 2100 the Earth will be 1.5C warmer but last year we already hit that threshold. But its only at that warming if each year for the next 4-10 years its consistently above 1.5C. So whatever is happening its accelerating and breaking scientists predictions into the worse case scenario. Also with crops, about 60% of crops grown is not for human use but this number changes depending on the crop, like soy only a few % (like 2%) is for human food the rest is for animal feed for beef production. Out of 6000 calories of food produced only 2500 of that is for human consumption. Also crops are already failing around the world, especially in Europe, droughts in the summer is killing crops but also very wet winters is doing the same and also pushing the sowing of crops back by several months.

The reason we are not in a fire alarm mode as a species is simple, most people do not understand 3 degree warming, they think that 3 degrees warmer would be wonderful not knowing how ecosystems work. Education is key if we want people to care about our environment. In Canada where I live we are now going to elect a Conservative gov just on the basis of a carbon tax that is actually beneficial to most people since we get a trimester rebate in the mail, if you are not a high energy user you are simply making money but the far right has hijacked the issue to the point where the present gov no longer is viable. I have very little hope that we will do what is needed since most people are clueless on climate.

I still do not understand why three trillion tons of C02 equivalent industrial pollution has led to a fixation on trying to make the climate system livable. Pollution is produced by the economic system, so it is not climate models that matter most, but economic models. If an economic system is terminal to humans and life, I think it can be understood to have reached the sufficient threshold of failure, and should be discarded. Or we can try to change nature to suit the economy - because the 20% of humanity that benefits from overconsumption feel they are very special.

Track us on what we are doing, rather than what we could be doing, and we are at the top end of the 'worst case' models. no matter which ones you use.
At current rates, we have less than 6 years to COMPLETELY STOP using fossil fuels for energy production and transportation. And that is using the 'best case' scenario for stopping us blasting through 2.5c (which assumed a reduction from 2020 year on year).
