  • In our last video featuring the Redcat Wendigo, John dropped a new Castle Creations Mamba X esc into the rig along a Puller Pro 540L sensored brushless motor. Now we get to show you how it performs. John will take the rock racer out to the Holmes Hobbies rock course to see how it will do in crawling type situations. Will the rig handle? Will the system overheat? We'll show you and tell you what is happening during the tests. But this is really a rock racer, so how quick will the new brushless system be? You can't miss this part and John shows you just what kind of rip you can get from the electronics swap. There's lots of action in this video and some problems arise too. If you're a Redcat Wendigo or a rock racer owner, you'll want to see here what a Holmes Hobbies brushless system can do for you!

When I seen your first Castle-link tune...I was like "we tune almost identical".
I've noticed on the Revolver and 4274S I only need to run 70% drag-brake and medium on ramp-up.
Even on my 35 pound BC8 Mammoth with the 1000kv Revolver...just so much torque and drag-brake.

Hey Mr. Holmes, I just got this set up for my Wendigo, however, I’m really modifying the rear suspension and going to run 1.9’s. I’m going to play around with my local u4rc group, but I was wondering what pinion you would suggest with that set up? I’ll likely do more trailing than racing.

Two things I’ve noticed with the drag brake ramp: first is that it doesn’t seem to ramp at low rpm. Just comes on and I like it like that for crawling. Second, I have to use the 2nd slowest setting, and it still comes on instantly at low rpm but progressively once the rig is moving. But iirc you have yours set to high and with such a strong motor brake I think you’re seeing that child.

  • @KTMcaptain

For me the temps don’t shoot up until I get into 2nd gear. Crawling actually brings the temps down with the fan. It draws low amps crawling even under full throttle launching up obstacles, but in 2nd gear it sucks the life out of my batteries. Pulled 1800 watts thus far, and consumes 85% more amp hours vs the standard 2700kv.
Interestingly the 4100r stays around 150-160f but the fan stays on the entire run. The 2700 will push the mamba x to 120-140f but the fan never comes on. Robert @ castle tells people on the forum it’s ok to run this thing to 200f and that his steams water off it. Also their 18 mosfets can handle 180 amps continuous iirc. I have all those comments screen shotted in case I break something. Lol.
It’s not a question of temperature running this motor on my rig, it’s that my 5ah 3S pack dies too quickly... that and this thing throws scale boulders at me and it hurts.

Back in my diesel tuning days I met a Cummins engineer. My truck ran 65psig on a single large s300 and 75psig on twins. The engineer put his rental car into reverse and kept doing burnouts and slamming it into drive. Snapped the axle shaft and got out of the car and walked away. Might have been drunk... definitely “lubricated.”
But if that’s how a Cummins man thinks I know their shift is built strong. And everything around our trucks broke besides that 1300lbs, iirc, beautiful strait 6.

I have mine set off my steering so that when I turn it brakes hard!
Nice cartwheel 🤸‍♀️ action. But seriously I have mine setup on crawl race mode and high gear with low ramp speed and 60% brakes. It’s perfect.
But this 4100r motor is ridiculous with its brakes. Flipped my trx6 ass over roof when I stopped it in front of me as the ground transitioned from sand to grass. That’s a long truck to flip that way and it was from the 70% brakes (expo set to 50% radio = 20% brake) and not the drag brake that did it.

I could have been harder, but the tie rod is the typical fail point and I found it. Pushing a tall geared rig through the rocks with a high KV motor is also a pretty bad idea. Okay, John, I just realized that you are the person of which I've needed to ask a certain question: It's been a pet peeve for years that reverse is almost always jerky. As if a voltage buildup has been released but not controlled. There are the obvious ways around that, such as adjusting expo, punch, whatever, but those are bandaid fixes for something that shouldn't happen & is hugely disappointing to watch when you're trying to 'watch' your rig perform in scale.
Being an authority on rc motors, perhaps you can explain why this is such a largely ignored function in esc design? Is it just that not enough people complain? Imagine if 'forward' always started with the same wheel-raising jerk?

    • @HolmesHobbies

Thank you for saving most of us $400. I really liked the Design and looks of it, but I just don't think Redcat executed a very well made product. Luckily your motors seem to make everything better, they kind of have Midas Touch for whatever rig they get installed into. I Would rather buy Losi Rock Rey at this point in the Rock Racer category and install a Puller Pro in it.
I am really hoping Traxxas makes a Trx4 and 6 Rock Racer at some point. I would also like Element Rc to eventually make a Rock Racer...
Fun video Idea: I think you should install the IFS kit on your Enduro with a High KV Puller Pro and your 500v3 and slap some 2.2's on it to make your own Element Rock Racer. Crawl it and then take it to a BMX park and just Send It.

I agree. this thing just doesn't seem to do anything well, no matter what 'category' it's supposed to fit in. It looks really jumpy, unstable and tippy at high speed, and that's just on relatively flat grass. Imagine if he were trying to cross a rock bed at speed. There would be no control at all. It's not a rock crawler either, that was made evident in the video. I have a rockrey and while not perfect, it is a much more capable rock racer than this thing by far.

Imagine if it had a TRX-4 2 speed!

This motor is insane with a stock trx4 2 speed gearing. Launches scale boulders in high. But completely controlled in low. It’s very fun.

No, seriously... what if you shorten the wheelbase? It should tight it up for better clearance. Also, I don't know how to, and this rig supposedly has the ability. It comes set in the middle of its shortest and longest configuration, but from the way it looks to me you either have to cut the frame or buy adapted parts to make it work. Either way, I'm clueless because they show a picture of the frame and the adjustment, but nothing I can find on how to do it. I would personally like to see what happens if shortened, and go back to normal if I don't like it, but neither willing to cut nor spend a ton of cash.

@@HolmesHobbies I am looking for some more wheel speed but still retain low speed control on my trx4 sport. Currently stock motor Hw 1080 esc. What would you install? Puller pro w/mamba X or just a better brushed motor? I want to notice the upgrade though. You are the expert.

Man, these things seem like money pits, breaking so easily. My redcat short course sc10 is the same way. Fast, but something almost always breaks on it every couple batteries. Doesn’t seem to crawl well, and seems like it’ll break the first time it hits a rock “rock-racing”... just sayin
