Mad scientist ranks church pedals 😂
I'm so glad to see a UA-camr using an SM-58 instead of a big honkin condenser mic
It's just for the punk aesthetic; he shops out the honker.
And it actually sounds good instead of being overly crispy or bloated and picking up shit in the room.
@@noyd4172 Good mic technique trumps expensive mic, every time.
I remember reading and hearing Joe Barresi state multiple times that most of the guitar sounds he's recorded are SM57 and/or MD421-based. Fancy mics are fun, but knowing your mics through and through is best.
'you have to figure out how to judge my integrity.' finally a youtuber that speaks the truth! Love your vids!
I think he’s likely more honest because they gave him the pedals, and didn’t pay him on top of that. Some people who have spent a lot of money to buy several Strymon pedals will defend them to the death because they have cognitive dissonance about that investment and the value of the pedals.
@@TeddSchecklermost UA-camrs that get stuff for free swear that it won’t influence their opinion. I’m not saying they are lying but this is refreshing to me

I've been waiting for a Strymon shoot-out video like this for ages. Very entertaining, man.
Nobody can offer an objective opinion on pedals but it's interesting to hear from those who have played with a bunch. And you were honest about being sent free ones and having affiliate links - didn't change my opinion of your evaluation and the transparency won you brownie points from me.
Thanks for the comment
Man the Volante is in my personal ULTRA tier. The sound on sound alone is absolutely incredible and endlessly fun to me. I love that it’s almost one knob per function and there’s just so many amazing sounds you can get out of it.
This was fun. Time for an Iridium video!
Would love a walk-through of your board, man.
I bet it changes a lot
I did a super annoyingly detailed walkthrough and writeup at some point on Patreon. Maybe I should do a regular video about it.
@@CyberattackWorld please do Ivan. It’s always interesting to see what order people place their amp sims, wet effects and drive..oh and buffers..that’s a topic that gets endless mileage on thegearpage.
The lack of "MONEY!" stinger after the affiliate link speech has me reconsidering my channel subscription.
FUCK

all i hear is mitch hedberg. i used to own these pedals, I still do, but I used to also.
"My friend asked me if I wanted a frozen banana. I said 'No, but I want a regular banana later, so....yeah.'"
Poor Orbit. Always forgotten.
1) Nightsky
2) Volante
3) Orbit
At some point they took the Orbit out of production-when I was working on this video I noticed it's no longer listed on their website. So that's why I didn't cover it. But if I had, it would have been in the tier of pedals I've never played anyway.
This channel from day one inspired myself and others to Iridium
People are still sleeping on Mobius in the comments... It's actually the only Strymon I have, but it is stellar in it's versatility! The Pattern Trem and Quadrature (ring mod stuff) are exceptionally deep and weird. Wondering what they might add if they do an "MX" version.
I can’t wait either
Subscribed. You’re chill and curious. looking forward!
As a strymon fan boi Ive never been more excited for a UA-cam video...
I think personally, the Volante is my greatest pedal of all time. If i could only have 1 pedal forever it would be that one.
Deco sleeper trick- use it as an always on master volume for your board, especially in low stage volume situations. You can pull the volume back and edge the saturation up to compensate for your amp not getting optimal level.
Hey, would you consider doing an in-depth composition video? Your process(es) for actually writing?
I love this suggestion. Thanks, yeah that would be extremely fun.
I’ll say what I say everytime. You should be the biggest musician/review/tutorial channel on UA-cam.
You also have a way of keeping it interesting. Maybe a weekly podcast?
Amazing piece of advertisement for the Strymon Mobius right here.
gotta do it
Thanks for explaining tiers.
I agree with your Big Sky take. I love reverb, but it took until Meris released the Mercury X for me to pull the trigger on a big box modern reverb pedal (came close to buying the Empress Reverb a few times though). The Big Sky is fun but there are many things about it that kept me away, including its workflow.
I feel bad for Zelda.
I only have the Deco. I love the slightly noisy saturation that really plays well with other things, although it's not currently on the pedalboard so there's that.
Killer that you dig the Iridium so much!
I'm pushing 30, and ever since I was a kid I dreamed of getting a tube amp. I made my dream come true in my early twenties by purchasing a twin reverb for $1,500 and paying it off over 5 years.
Never in my LIFE did I think that modelers would become so good - and that I would use them so much. I got the Dream '65 but I swapped over to the Lion '68, all while my amp sits in storage. For a modern guitarist, it genuinely makes so much sense to just invest in nice studio monitors and commit to a modeling pedal. I love my tone and the consistency - and I haven't looked back.
Cool video. The only Strymon pedal I have is Night Sky. I like it a lot!
Big fan! I had the iridium for 3 years as my everything pedal and I eventually did desire a “better” amp modeler because I play in a band with someone using a UA dream and it was actually difficult to compete in the mix. I switched to a Tonex one and have had a MUCH better time in that context. Idk what it is, but there’s something about the iridium that sounds good in isolation and is fine if you can mix it in post, but just doesn’t have the same top end bite as many other amp sim pedals. The Tonex Ones are cheap enough I recommend grabbing one and downloading some free sample captures and seeing what you think.
I’ve had the Iridium since it came out. I have “better” modelers now, but the Iridium has consistently stayed on my big board. I know it sounds weird (and I know I’m not alone in this) but that headphone jack makes everything sound glorious. With that said, I think the chime setting is the only decent one. I’ve never tried the ToneX but I’ve heard good things
Use the EQ in your mixing console.
There are EQ knobs in the mixing console for a reason.
@@waltuhhimself Of course eq is there for a reason, but if I could just improve the signal coming in, why wouldn’t I just do that? Improving the signal coming in makes even MORE mixing sense than using the eq, smartass
Interesting video!
I think you should give the Riverside another chance if you find one used, because it pairs well with the Iridium, and is versatile enough to be your only drive pedal. It's not going to do anything crazy though. Compadre is great too, but it's more of a utility pedal where it just does its thing but is not exciting in any way.
For me, the Nightsky got sold because I felt it was too much for what I wanted out of a reverb. Flint V2 is on its way out because I find the SA Collider sounds better and don't need the tremolo that much.
Volante is still my favorite Strymon, with El Cap V2 and Deco V2 close behind.
OK you convinced me about the Riverside.
Ok now do Boss.
Just kidding buddy, great vid, love u
dude I would love to do Boss, but I've only played like 1% of their line
@@CyberattackWorld thats why I'm kidding lmao, your ??? tier would be pages long
@@lucasgoncalvesdefaria7121 maybe i should just do it anyway and let most of the video be ??? tier
Glad you talked about the tremolo in the Mobius, I've always wondered and I haven't seen anyone talk extensively about using it until now. Big trem fan/user here. Also glad you're talking about the Keeley Dark Side, I think it's slept on just bc it's technically a multi-effect. Thinking of picking up an El Cap v1 or a Flint if I can find one for a good price used.
What was your Apple commercial?

Would’ve loved to see you love the el Cap as much as me. I get it, you have the Timeline, however you could make another kickass video out of it and I could then finally see what the hell I can use these secondary functions for lol
this rules and is fun and confessional. You may have done this already, but I'ld love to see something like this but with your pedal board generally and pedal collection standouts -what you keep on the board and around and why. What dirt pedals etc. what combos end up being key.
great idea thanks dude
Never had the DIG or Volante, but I would assume I would prefer the DIG. However, I totally appreciate your perspective in valuing flexibility/tweakability over the emulation capability. I think the ability to recreate other things is overvalued. 'What should we do with new tech?' 'Recreate old tech. Recreate old tech. Recreate old tech.' Could anything be more boring?!
Need to revisit your Mobius vid after this. Rock on!
Love the CP-20 in the back on Piano 2 - One of the most underrated EP sounds and the keyboard itself is so cool
Any chance you'd consider doing a video of how you use the iridium?
yes, but I don't know how interesting it would be. I'm not really pushing it into unusual territory or doing any of my usual cyber whatever stuff. In general I prefer the Marshall amp and the Vox amp over the Fender amp. Also don't overlook that the Marshall amp can have a good clean tone with the drive knob at like 9 or 10 o'clock. These days usually I leave the room knob on zero, and instead I'll run the Iridium into a stereo reverb with a touch of room-style reverb before recording. That's 99% of my tricks.
@@CyberattackWorld Yep. I use them all and surprisingly the Marshall clean is good. No problem. I enjoy the shit out of your videos. Thanks Ivan.
Thank you for this list!
This is the UA-cam I need
Have you tried the H90? Curious your take on it compared to the Mobius.
I’ve never tried one
Love your channel, the best gear head on youtube in my opinion. i don’t really like Strymon personally. But the one pedal i do like you didn’t review…OB.1. Because i don’t like Strymon i’m gonna say it’s an Ultra Tier because it overcame my brand prejudice on performance alone. That’s pretty impressive since aesthetics usually dominate my product purchases unless i’m searching for a specific effect. It’s a sleeper pedal in the Strymon range. And it shows how most youtube guys just buy what everyone else does. Luckily my friend’s a corporate touring professional. And he had this pedal, only guy i’ve ever seen use it. It’s got a great feel. Replaced both the BBE clean boost and compressor he was using for years. Clean Boost is the gem that most youtubers havent discovered yet. Pick one up before they become impossible to find.
Thanks for the comment. The only reason I didn't mention the OB-1 is that my understanding is the Compadre is meant to have replaced it (but I've never played the Compadre either).
I want a timeline plug in. It's cool they have been doing plugin versions
Thanks. Honest break down that's both saved and cost me money :)
My man thank you. Saving and spending money is the best!!!!!
Would love to see you compare the iridium to other amp modelers. I have the ACS1 but wonder if another modeler does it better.
The Iridium is the only one I have. Thanks for the comment though.
Great rundown - which IRs are you using on the Iridium?
whatever the standard ones are
Have you experimented with 3rd party IRs with the Iridium, or have you always run stock? York has a bass cab IR that let's me get fat bass tones. Great for either a real bass or when I use the C4 for synth bass.
I've only ever used the stock ones, but I'd be interested in trying other ones that are good for bass specifically. Thanks for the tip.
I also had and sold the Big Sky. Right now the Cloudburst is the main reverb on my board, and I'm loving it. Iridium is never coming off of my board. The next Strymon product I'm interested is their Starlab eurorack module.
Oof coming in hot. you're very correct, though. Nightsky + Deco + Flint yes.
I like my El Capistan but I like old school delays. Also have a Boonar and a basic analog delay
Okay. Jumpscare at 11:39
they sent me this pedal and i couldn't say "no" to selling it on reverb for $700
Well done man
We need a 2nd one about source audio
I got the dig and iridium. Both are goat
I didn't love the iridium. It is passable for a guitar tone but it sounds thin and fake to me. I have a Kingsley Page TS tube preamp running into a ox stomp cab sim instead and it sounds way better and reacts like a tube amp but offers all of the other benefits of going direct you get from the iridium
On a second note, I'd love the cyberattack treatment towards weird quirky amps. Like the new Pano-Verb amp. (yeah super $$$ but still)
Pedal board reveal!
I bought, own, and love the Brig because of your demo. The music from Zelda did it for me :)
Dude the Zelda music in that video is the exact part that uses the reverb sound I miss! That's why I keep going back to the Brig in my mind. What have I done.
you did great, i know that was tough.
thank you
Couldn’t you use your timeline or any stereo delay for what you use the deco for? The dig has a stereo ping pong delay I use to create a nice stereo chorus sometimes.
My memory of the last time I tried to do this with the TimeLine was that the stereo options for its dual delays were not doing the ping-pong type of thing I wanted. Also the fact that it lives on my board makes it annoying to use on a daily basis for recording, the way I use the Deco.
Mr. Strymon.
Made me laugh and learn
so true about the flint being so good despite not being cyber attack at all! and rando gripe - i’m still mad there’s not dual up/down shimmer mode on nightsky, it’s the only thing it doesn’t have that i need.
also so true about iridium - i forget i have it because it’s boring, but it’s 100% essential
@@WHATISPOLITICS69 I never even thought about that for the NightSky but I guess you're right. I don't really like octave-down shimmer reverb in general, but now that I'm saying that, I want to find a way to use it.
@@CyberattackWorld ooh can’t wait to hear that! but that’s the thing - down shimmer is ok for some deep ocean sounds, but it’s way better with up-shimmer on top. massive outer space sounds. EQD astral destiny has a nice up/down shimmer, and some super awesome modes that the strymons don’t have (ascend and descend which are like satanic spirit modes) but it’s mono, so it needs to be stereo-ized if i use it
No surprises with the ultra tier. I've actually been wondering how often you record out of an amp for studio-grade stuff so I appreciate the honesty here.
Do you think you'd use tube amp more for practicing/coming up with songs/home recording if you lived in a place free of neighbors?
I live in a rural area so I have no fear of noise complaints, and I'm torn between the Iridium or a tube amp as my next purchase. Would appreciate any insight
Check out the UAD dream too. Not as much value as the iridium, but it’s the best amp simp sound bar none (better than fractal, iridium, quad cortex, etc).
For me, the noise issue is only part of it. The other thing is setting microphones-which is an art, and not something I ever practice anymore. So if I had no fear of noise complaints, I would still doubt my ability to set microphones in a way that would sound as good as what the Iridium does automatically.
@@CyberattackWorld thanks for the insight!
Steve Albini, rest in peace, has a GREAT video on mic'ing amp cabs where he troubleshoots/explains the science of mic phasing issues with stereo setups and it's absolute witchcraft
@@FakeGlasses will do, and thanks to your typo 'amp simp' is now my preferred word for these boxes
Thoughts on their flanger?
I’ve never played it, and since it’s no longer in production I left it out of the vid. If it’s like the flangers in the Mobius then I’m sure it rules.
No Brigadier?? I know it's an older one, but waay different than the Brig
For the purposes of this video I treated the Brig as an updated version of the Brigadier
You missed Orbit 😉
I'm happy with my Timeline, OG Big Sky, and Orbit.
I left out orbit because somewhere along the line they took it out of production
El capistan is the best!
Strymon Bigsky or Walrus R1?
I've never played the Walrus one
What isn't he telling us about these pedals? Big Pedal is tricking us all!
Is there anything that you would change from the Iridium? I have a Simplifier mkii and I want to try the Iridium
I really had to think about it, because theres basically nothing I would change. But I guess it would be cool if you could use its cabinet simulation by itself (which I think the BigSky can do), and run a separate preamp into that.
@@CyberattackWorld I have the Big Sky and the cabinet simulation sounds awesome, I use it a lot, the only thing that I wish it would do it’s to be able to apply it on just one side
You look like Steel Panther's Satchel without the wig!
Dude, you should do stand-up. You sound just like Mitch Hedberg....lol

The Deco is soooo underrated ... I mean it's terrible. Don't get it.
No el capistan?
Can you do walrus next?!
I've never played any of their pedals, so it might be a while before I'm ready to rank them.
The new Mako mkII pedals look very promising. I'd love to see comparisons ACS1 vs Iridium, D1 vs Timeline, & R1 vs Night sky. I suppose the M1 would compete with the Mobius.
Why did you put reverb on your voice 😂
Missed the orbit
At some point they took the Orbit out of production-when I was working on this video I noticed it's no longer listed on their website. So that's why I didn't cover it. But if I had, it would have been in the tier of pedals I've never played anyway.
@@CyberattackWorld ah haha fair doos
Spoiler alert: they’re all mid 🎯
*We're all mid.
i own hundreds of pedal collected in 35 years but NO STRYMON: They are really excellent but i cant accept to spend 400$ for every single kind of effect. To have a decent pedalboard you need at least 2000$ and almost no display telling you what are you fucking playing. There are many good alternatives much much cheaper.
It's actually _not_ $400 for one effect. My Deco that I sold (and miss way more than I would have guessed) did double tracking and tape saturation better than the replacements I now have, and the chorus effect is tasty and unique too. That's 3 effects in one box, extremely high quality, with stereo control and MIDI. When you look at other pedals from other manufacturers, the price is comparable. The Chase Blass lineup _starts_ at $400 for small form, one-effect pedals, yet no one ever loses their mind about their pricing for some reason. _Oh but look at the cool sliders_
🌶🌶
Magneto and Starlab are better if someday you discover the power of modulation.. eurorack style
Love my sunset. Especially with an eq pedal.
I love this real UA-cam content, nothing fancy, just talking about freak stuff!
When you said there's only one pedal in the ultra tier, i just knew what that is.
DIG on the low tier is a call for violence, man.
This video has the craziest energy. I love it
SUNSET ABSOLUTE ULTRA.
I watch all your vids even if I’m not gonna buy the gear. Your playing is phenomenal and your approach to guitar and music in general is fresh. Great to see your take on all these pedals. Thanks for always being truthful, it shows in all of your content.
thanks for the comment, really glad you feel that way
Empress >>>>>>>>>>> Strymon
Man, you 100% had me up until the Iridium haha. I just don't think it's as realistic as things like the UAFX pedals, kemper player, or tonex. Everything else on the list was pretty spot on (I would probably put my bigsky higher though). Great video!
FIGHT
I expect you probably already know this but, the Quadrature mode of the Mobius can be used for dynamics controlled modulation like the envelope mode on the Ola. I don't think it can do chorusing, but it can definitely be used for reactive tremolo, vibrato, and ring mod-esque sounds.
yes the envelope stuff on the Mobius is super cool, i would not be surprised if that stuff is even cooler than the Ola
Here I am with the Orbit as my only Strymon pedal, lol.
Orbit is actually great. It's a flanger but there's a mix knob, so I use it as flanger, chorus, and vibrato. You can also mix LFO and Feedback settings to get a nice phasey sound or a thicker sound, etc. You can find Orbits now for like 150 so I think they're worth it for someone looking for a good flanger. It definitely doesn't get very weird, though. Not sure why they took it out of production, I guess it didn't sell well.
Yeah I've always wondered why they took it out of production too.
Agreed
