21ST CENTURY SCHIZOID MAN (Live, Fillmore East, 11/21/1969)
(Fripp, Lake, McDonald, Giles, Sinfield)
These pieces were recorded at Bill Graham’s Fillmore East venue in New York probably on 21 November 1969. The Fillmore East shows are widely held to be the best played by the band in America, and the 8 track recordings made of these concerts, which disappeared after the show, are the Holy Grail for Crimson archivists. These versions come not from those still undiscovered tapes, but from a cassette copy owned by Michael Giles. He was under the impression that his cassette was a widely available bootleg, little realising that he possessed the only known copy of these shows. A Man A City is an early, form of Pictures of a City. Notice that the final verse is instrumental, not sung as at Fillmore West some three weeks later.

Greg Lake voice was outstanding back then
Big agree
You want to tell me that the first lineup wasn't their best???
They NEVER played this song faster than they did here! They were tight as hell and could have ruled the world together!!!
This is one of the slower ones when you manage to find some of their earliest versions. This is just right, not too slow but not rushed
The other iterations each have their own charms, but yeah, the sheer brutal force this first lineup was capable of was legendary - I remember reading a review of their first live performance of it in Hyde Park, England, "it was as if a great serpent was uncoiling"... hehe Indeed.
listen to the vrooom vrooom version if you want to hear one faster than this
Faster doesn't always mean better! There's a version on The Great Deciever that I thought to be the best! But, anything Crimson does is usually great !
@@tommyrawlings3046 In this case, a song as difficult as this, it takes quite the team to play in perfect tune and tempo with each other, much more to be done at an insane speed as this!
BEST VERSION OF SCHIZOID MAN. Everyone is going off at this i can’t believe how the heavy metal fans (today mostly) never heard of them.
I've never met a metal fan who wasn't familar with King Crimson, especially this song in particular.
@@busterdouglas593 There's just talking out of their ass like they know shit.
@@TheBlackQueen Yes
@@busterdouglas593 not sure if you got the today mostly part but seriously Im a whole psych/prog fan and cant believe my hs never heard of them (class of 2021).
People don't know about them because Robert Fripp is an asshole who takes down everything thats posted to the internet that would increase their popularity with younger listeners
Imagine having Greg lake, Bill bruford and Robert fripp at the same time, would be amazing.
Tony Levin oughta be there too, I just think he's neat
@@chozora greg lake used to play bass in King crimson but Levin is better. It would be crazy to hear these guys together.
Imagine having both Names and Surnames starting with capital letters ...
@@MrUsermister imagine not capitalizing common nouns...
That would sound killer. Although in this live performance, Michael Giles is still on drums as of '69, he left at around '70 or '71 to be replaced by Bruford.
The drums sound un fucking believable in this wow
I can just imagine Keith Emerson hearing this song in '69 and thinking "I want to put a band together with this f*cker"
Drums sound so monstrous and monumental in this, perfect match for Giles' performance.
As a metalhead, this hits all the marks?! It's like Ur metal-jazz-prog. It's freaking my brain out but I LOVE it!!!
I think this is my favorite version of this song definitely, even with the quality of the recording
THEY ARE POSTING THE LIVE ALBUMS LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOO
HELL YEEEEES
Trakus
Tarkus
Tarkus
Bruford
This version is almost unbelievably fast. Saw KC many times from 1971 on, but oh, how I wish I had been there at the Fillmore that night!!!
The Fripp-Giles-Lake-McDonald-Sinfield lineup will never be beat!
@@TheBlackQueen Debatable.
michael giles ladies and gentelmen
Lake's voice is simply beautiful, I don't know what the setup was at that time but the drummer is fucking nuts, he's wrecking it, probably one of the best versions I've ever heard of this song
Michael Giles is the best drummer King Crimson ever had.
Agreed
Bruford... Giles a close 2nd 👍🏻😎🔥
Never heard this live version before. Might be the best i've ever heard.
This is performed at break neck speed. Woah.
Could you imagine hearing this in 1969? This mudtve been fucking INSANE to hear
Wow! I had never heard this version before!!! Greg's voice is amazing!
Lake voice in original version: 👹💀
Lake voice in live version: 👨🎤♥️
Some record label producer in the audience thinking to himself "how can I get them to play this as a commercially viable top 40 pop song. Hmmmm....like that new duo The Carpenters.
you know what this reminds me of? freshly baked donuts
Great for starting off the day
You never know what bizarre things will happen, so why not start it off with donuts
@@elipse371 I like honey dipped best
Yeah you never know when you're going on a adventure.
I think "The Court of the Crimson King" reminds me more of donuts. This song kinda gives off chocolate ice cream vibes in my opinion.
This was one of the lasts King Crimson Concert with this lineup, The last Concert was in December, Fillmore West
I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for USA and Earthbound
I wanna see Great Deceiver!
@@raydarable health food
The way he sings "MAaan" - wow.
I have been looking for this recording for years! Fucking incredible
Enjoyable then and now. Why? It's a mystery.
That was just a taste of the song as it was performed!
giles is such a beast
I think he was the best KC drummer. I love Bill, but man Giles had composition, chops and swing.
@@Meanstoend true, schizoid man has never been this good with the other drummer (no offense, i love all kc drummers)
Thank you SO MUCH for putting this up, and everything else too. Words cannot describe...
Thats out of this world, what a band
The number of views is wrong three digits (24,000 views now)
I should be heard by more people this legend
Heavy as they come.
Michael effing Giles!! Drumming like an absolute Boss.
Michael Giles is on fire
My god I really remember this Great song 🍷🤟🏻🍷 thank you for sharing it’s amazing 🤩
Earthshaking
JUST GREAT 🌈LIVE🎶👍
レイクのベースとジャイルズのドラムが頭おかしいレベル
Michael Giles on drums. what? I doubt even 3 drummers could replace him.
Even Bruford?
Watch and listen to Michael Giles with the 21st century schizoid band and you tell me. I can't find their good live in Japan dvd on youtube though.
@@terrydavis5915I'm not saying Michael is a bad drummer, WAY FAR FROM IT. But can you picture him doing Lark's Tongue in Aspic, Starless and Bible Black, Red and even Dicipline?
@@lenini056 Definitely not the Muir-ey parts, but we know for a fact Bruford did not nail this song like Giles does on every performance of his. Wallace came close in Earthbound tho
@@arch_dornan6066 strongly agree with you on Muir
Holy fawk this is amazing..
Can't touch this !!
Greg Lake, the balladeer, could also sing really heavy rock... King Crimson for the Metal lovers out there 🕺🏻💃🏻🍷🍷♑♑💞
One helluva album 👍
Yeah they were the boss
Какой же ахуенный голос у Грега лейка
Такие же мысли при прослушивании были
Amazing recording

I’m sure there was a 21st Century Schizoid Fœtus baking in the oven for this gig...

Don't You Boys Know Any Nice Songs ?
???
@@joaquinlezcano2372 At the end of Frank Zappa's "Joe's Garage" the "Mom" starts yelling at the guys playing. And she says "Don't You Boys Know Any Nice Songs". And that just popped into my head here.
@@SalAvenueNJ ah ok. Can you recommend me "Joe's garage"?
@@SalAvenueNJ He used to cut the grass, he was a very nice boy

they used to play that at hockey game intermissions on the organ, ok that wasn't true then again you never know
how "progressive rock" started
Oh ... I miss the sax. Was it there at all? Really bad mix.
Does Ladies of The Road 1972 vinyl exist or only CD was produced?
I think there's only CD, because Ladies of The Road was actually released in 2002, not 1972. The 1972 Earthbound has Vinyl.
You find it in "Islands" Vinyl record from 1971, Track 4
@@andreskrug8988 Ladies of the road isn't only song. It's a name of one of a live albums produced on CD as well released in 2002
@@SemenSonyah thanks for the info. Now i'm looking for the same as you... 😂. For the rest of my life...
@@andreskrug8988 Glad that you know it now. I definitely want to see a vinyl edition of this live album but it's rather impossible as DGMLive didn't release vinyl albums from after 1990s. They only re-begin to do so during these two years.
