It´s a pity the Dutch aren´t managing the planet. They just aren´t doing anything that makes no sense. Other countries build big idiotic prestigious projects and host Olympic games etc., ruin the environment and burn money. Not the Dutch. They always also have look for longterm usefullness and investment return. They had a comparably small colonial empire, but with high efficiency, smartness, common sense and never overestimating their possibilities they really made things hum.
The Dutch never overestimating themselves has some downsides. They never took great risks. If I compare the Netherlands to for example France, I think the Netherlands is more short term and circled around money. High speed rail cannot be done because no investments were made in new train infrastructure needed for these trains. The French did invest in high speed rail, now with more problems relating to climate change, this has proved to be a good investment. Schiphol, the primary airport of the Netherlands can’t grow because no plans were made by the government to relocate the airport. Instead it will have to shrink, which will have an impact on the economy. If long term plans and large investments would have been made, these problems would have never come up.
I think the Dutch did very well in all of their history and that the risks taken and the challenges were well calculated. Uniting and liberating themselves of the Spanish, war with England, war with France, successes in overseas, East India Company, monetary system innovations etc. What does a country of this size need a high speed rail system for? The problem with Limits of growth (like with Schipol) is a problem of capitalism. A business always needs to grow in order to pay the interest on the loans taken. Money therefore should be free of interest in order to eliminate this pressure. - The problem with growth is that it will kill us all. Where are the limits of growth? How many more highways, cars, buildings, deforestation etc can the planet stand. The delusion of eternal growth is suicidal for mankind. >There is enough for everyone on this planet. But not for everyone‘s greed.< Mahatma Ghandi
