    Thank you for this!I bought my very first pet tarantula (one of the pinktoes featured in this documentary) and I have to say, I wasnt a big spider person before, but I have immense respect and admiration for these creatures now after observing her. I grew curious about her counterparts in the world though so that's when I went looking and found this documentary. Awesome creatures we so easily dismiss or take for granted.

    If u look closely at the painting of the t eating the bird, the t actually has pink toes, so what the painter saw in Suriname was actually a pink toe, not a Goliath. And thank you for posting this, this documentary was one of my favorite things to watch as a kid.

    • @dayaautum6983
      @dayaautum6983 6 років тому +2

      Having a pink toe as a pet I recognized that right away, everything about it matches a pink toes even the size and from what I know of them in the wild they can do eat small birds. Irony is that pink toes are one of the most docile and nicest species of tarantulas.

    • @tedmyers8005
      @tedmyers8005 6 років тому +1

      Daya Autum I'm getting into the hobby of keeping ts and as of now I have a 3 inch Theraphosa stirmi and a 4 inch Brachypelma hamorii and I'm kind of embarrassed to say I don't have a pink toe. 😩

    • @dayaautum6983
      @dayaautum6983 6 років тому +2

      Those are very nice terrestrial breeds to have and the burgundy can grow freaking huge and be quite the show stopper and the Hamorii is also quite gentle.
      Avicularia Avicularia or common pink toes are pretty common, and cheap. They along with the Chiliian Rosea are the two most common sold in pet stored displacing the Brachypelma Smithi. There are two major issues with the Pink Toes I will let you in on, one is the ventilation + humidity requirements and a tall narrow enclosure instead of a wide and low one due to it being aboreal. The other one is that it takes time and patience when handling them. They won't bite, but they will run and jump. The mistake most people make with them is they scare the bejeezus out them, that and you need to kind of let them do their thing and not coral them too much or they will feel bullied. It's kind of like befriending a really shy and skittish cat.
      The advantage is that being aboreal they don't go splat so easily and once they get to know you are the most gentle things imaginable.

    • @tedmyers8005
      @tedmyers8005 6 років тому +1

      Daya Autum Yea I also heard that they can spray their poop at you if they feel threatened. But from what I hear avicularia avicularia and avicularia metallica would make a great first arboreal t :)

    • @dayaautum6983
      @dayaautum6983 6 років тому +1

      Yes the dreaded poop cannon XD. I only saw it in action once, and let me tell you they are spot on for accuracy and it's not a spray but a fine stream that can go 3 feet or more in a most impressive display. If treated well you shouldn't have it shoot at you, mine hit a loud beetle that had come into the room while my T was out. I still do not know how it managed to detect the beetle with such accuracy or if it was pure luck as they can not see well and are deaf, I can only tell you that despite all that they seem to be quite the sharp shooters with their poop.
      Avicularia Metalica I have heard are also nice, but not all T's in the pink toe family are so beware. Avicularia Avicularia are the nicest of the bunch from what I have read and mine is easy to deal with, just be very gentle and not too pushy. Mine gets a bit irritated (watch the abdomen for this species, that's the earliest sign) when you go hand over hand and wants to be able to go where it may, so safety permitting, give it what freedom of choice as to where it can go as you can, and provided it isn't terrified it shouldn't freak out or jump much. Or at least that has been my experience with mine.
