I’d much prefer The Lover Speaks version as well. Didn’t realise Annie Lennox’s version was a cover for around 10 years until I came across the original on a 80’s compilation cd. So much more emotion in the original version. Top Song.
Bought this single and the album on release - to this day it remains unique and mesmerising song. As for Annie Lennox cover, all else considered, she deserves big kudos for eventually getting the song the exposure, recognition and commercial success the original release deserved back in the day.
Far superior and made me tear up inside 😢 and stays inside you as well, like a feeling when you miss someone and you know that person will never come back,it is sad and also hugs you as you embrace it.
Only found this song a week ago. I have always thought that the Annie Lennox version was the og. I love the Annie version, it is fantastic and some bits i prefer. But there is just something more to this OG version. More ethereal and the guitars are just chefs kiss.
Great that you are putting the record straight, that Annie lennox wrote this track. The Lover Speaks. I was in Pakistan in 1986 and met the brother of one of this duo,he had a tape cassette of this track. Amazing then and now. I heard it a week later on john Peel's World service programme..
Shawn, The facts you research help set the stage for the artist and song. I seem to remember this song from a different version. This version has a catchypercussion sound and tempo, the guitars are nice you are right in your comment on the ambiance and arrangement I agree on the vocals and the lyrics have a strange and unique way of telling a love story. This has a sort of Gothic haunting sound. I agree Shawn, this is the better version. Unique song choice Dan.
Great reaction Shawn. I got this on vinyl when it was first released back in the day. I think this, the original, is much better than the Annie Lennox version. Have you ever heard of a song called Avenging Annie by Andy Pratt? Great song from the 70's that was later covered by Roger Daltrey. If you can check it out.
It’s better if for no other reason than they wrote it and it’s so unique. Such an interesting sound made famous by Lenox but I do more enjoy the 80’s gothic sound to it.
@@ReactionsToTheClassics Please do. It was a total revelation to me when I got the 2015 reissue with extra tracks. There are some songs on there that are even better than the one in your video.
Absolutely Breathtaking
Thanks for Watching!
The whole album is a masterpiece. I’m lucky to have it as both an album and CD as it is rare.
Thanks for Watching!
For me, this song and this version have to be in the top 10 of the most beautiful songs made..
Its a great one. Thanks for watching Richard!

I've always loved the original takes be back to my bedsit and heartache in the 80s, and makes more sense when the lover speaks sings it
Great point Sally!

Great song from a great album, and also contains one of my all time favourite outro guitar riffs.

Can’t really decide now which version I prefer, this original version or Annie Lennox’s.

Their debut is a lost classic. They don't make them like that anymore.
