    Bloody great stuff. With regards to the sheep pulling the bark off . It maybe due to being insufficient in certain things. Or not enough grazing in that paddock (hard in this horrid weather!) just something to think of !

      Thank you Kathy - indeed it could well have been. Thankfully seems to have stopped now - I think there's a sweetness in the bark that maybe attracted them? They have a lick bucket in which hopefully continues to be an alternative to trees haha. Thanks for the comment :)

    Lovely to see you all again and Happy New Year 2024. Plans are always changing and that is half the fun for me. It a bit more work for you 🤭. We are doing 2 tip runs this week because like everyone accumulating is an ongoing cycle. Absolutely can’t wait to see the changes and plans for 2024 and hopefully you will find a place for the big new poly tunnel. Have an awesome week and here’s to a fabulous growing season 2024, Ali 🇨🇦

      We really enjoyed our little unplanned break over December and are raring to go now. Adapting is our middle name right? 😉 let’s see what the year brings on the polytunnel, right now I’m planning maximising the greenhouse but without overcrowding which I’m known for 😂 Have a lovely week too and talk soon xx

    Really exciting projects coming up. I’m very curious to see how the RIRs are to eat, we are thinking about getting some meat chickens this year, but I prefer the idea of dual purpose and keeping everything free range. ❤

    Happy new, some great plans ahead. Glad you're getting back in to breeding of the birds, high welfare, such as yours come with a premium price.
    It's been a strange end to 2023 down here in Kent haven't suffered the storms really but now at saturation point many of our lesser rivers are on flood alert and heading in to a big tide

    • @OurSmallholdingAdventure
      @OurSmallholdingAdventure  7 місяців тому +1

      Thank you, that means a lot. It seems to be a far reaching issue, the saturation point - it feels like there's just nowhere else for the water to go! Fingers crossed it dries out nicely for you guys (and us too!)

    "For some reason, things just accumulate" - Oh, thank you so much - I am just starting up my small holding in NZ and I just seem to be accumulating things, but a whole bunch of half-started projects and only seeming to make small progress on each. Thank you.

    Wow , will it ever stop raining and dry out this year . Would it not be advisable to get some drainage in that land and run it into the river before you start the projects this year . However you have enough on by the sounds of it . I will be with you every step of the way , can't wait .

    • @OurSmallholdingAdventure
      @OurSmallholdingAdventure  7 місяців тому +1

      We have to be due some dryer weather soon don't we Mick? Yes, drainage would help overall but even our neighbours who have drainage in to the river are fully saturated after the latest downpours so will keep an eye on how their fields get on. Take care and all the best for 2024 again :)

    Newby questions:
    1. What kind of income sources can homesteaders rely on? Especially those who have no farming experience.
    2. Is it difficult to manage kid’s schooling? Long drives up and down to schools?
    3. Any advice for people who are inept at DIY?
    Thanks

    • @OurSmallholdingAdventure
      @OurSmallholdingAdventure  2 місяці тому +1

      Hi there, apologies for the late reply. We both work full time so our smallholding income is extremely low and the school routine hasn't changed :) As for DIY, if you don't have unlimited funds then our advice is to learn the skills as soon as you can

    Plenty of interesting projects on your list already then, without adding any extra 😆! I look forward to seeing how they all pan out over the course of the year. I too have a big project - my son has had an allotment for the last 3 years and I have been helping him with it, but he's decided he doesn't have time to commit to it any longer, so I am going to take it on by myself...... I may have bitten off more than I can chew but we will see, we've done so much work on it already I don't want to give it up.

    As promised a couple of questions... but first by god you guys are going to be busy!!! The plans for the veg garden look incredibly impressive but i really want to know how Steven chopped with all those pallets just holding the membrane down 😊. Also you mentioned the previous way you raised meat birds as unethical,... can you explain a bit more please. Looking forward to seeing the plans unfold

    • @OurSmallholdingAdventure
      @OurSmallholdingAdventure  6 місяців тому +2

      Hi Sean, made us laugh re pallets, they were no good for using as rotten so he managed ok 😂
      Regarding the chickens, that’s a really good question as we didn’t make it obvious. We’ll cover it in our next video when we talk birds but basically, the previous ones are a hybrid that is designed to eat and grow quickly. They come on at a rate that just doesn’t feel right. As much as we give them the best life as we can, they get too big too quickly and literally choose to sit and eat over moving around and foraging. Take care!

      We are self sufficient in meat and many vegetables and fruit. However we both work full time as we have a mortgage and utility bills to pay. The smallholding or UA-cam do not pay for it. Thanks for watching
