  • In this video I want show the results after testing three different end tips on an auger when drilling on clay. It has been very frustrating getting the auger stuck so often but I finally got to the right tip at the end of the auger to drill successfully.

One of the best things you can do if you plan to dig a lot of holes with a tractor, besides getting a FEL mounted auger, is to have the remotes match on both the 3PH and auger. m &m on one, f&f on the other so you can easily reverse the flow and back the auger out if it gets stuck in clay or on a root. But if you have enough GPM hydraulic flow, a FEL auger can't be beat. You can see what you're doing, apply downward pressure, and reverse rotation on the fly.

Agree, hydraulic would be the way to go. In my case the half cut tip is working very well. So far I have made 50+ holes and does not get stuck. In any case this is a 600USD auger, so it is what it is. A bit wobbly, not too curate but for what I do it serves me well.

I built a stop that rest on the ground at 2 feet so when it starts to bury all it does is stops and then it spins and strips the hole out

I tried something like that at first but I could not strip the hole, instead I snapped the sheer pin on the auger. Hard clay is tough. Thank you for checking the video.

It’s best to drill about eight inches and pull it out, eight more and pull it out. Go slow and drill a little then clear the hole, that way you don’t get stuck.
Yeah I learned the hard way.

Agree, it is a hard learning curve until you realize that is the way. until you figure out, lot of pipe wrench and cheater bar trying to get it out.
