THE CHATS - GET FUCKED / 2022 / BARGAIN BIN / PUNK
7/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
Seeing The Chats get reviewed by Melon is just like seeing my boy all grown up.
Yesss
Another key feature of a good punk band: All the songs are played twice as fast live.
One of the truest comments I've seen lol
Can confirm. Makes raving fun.
Been to a concert of theirs and that's how it was
saw them live and they played 23 songs in 45 minutes
Can confirm, they're fucking CRAZY live
I saw the chats open for Queens of the Stone Age in 2018 and that ginger mullet is even more impressive in person.
yea they killed it before QOTSA! A tad out of place but they were great.
OMG ITS PRONOUNCED "QUEENS" "LAND"
They caught my attention with Smoko a few years back, super happy they're still out there making an earnest effort. This album kicks ass.
I'm so happy he is finally covering the chats. I've seen them live in concert and they were amazing!
"a Sex pistols LP" or "a Germs album", using the indefinite article as though there weren't only one of each of those.
Need that Osees review, melon
I hear a lot of Group Sex era Circle Jerks and Red Cross in this record. Pretty much what you want a punk record to sound like
The thing I like about the chats, no, love about the chats is their blandness that I think frankly is better put as bluntness. Everything comes off as dry but I think in the best possible way. They are a great punk band sort of reviving an old sound but still letting you know that they are the new gen. It's a very refreshing take on the old school sound. The blue collar blues as you put it is another thing I just love about the chats. The topics are so mundane but painted in such a relatable way. Songs like price of smokes really leave you in this generic feeling of any thing that goes up in price especially a frustrated youth in a fit of "god damn I swear this is all I needed to hold me over why is everything just fuckin me" these fits of enrages self mumbling that we all have over the silliest issues. But seeing them as still issues and frustrations we all have as working people.
I've loved the chats since their first record for the same reasons. And just on top of it, nobody is mad to hear a chats song. I have never gotten a bad reaction to playing smoko or pub feed cause it's just fun enjoyable relatable rage.
Anthony FATano be like
Gives Get fricked a 7
Gives MBDTF a 6
a fantano bruh moment
For context, the price of cigarettes has tripled in Australia over the last decade
This band sounds sooooo much better in person then online. Like huuuugggeee differences
SammyClassicSonicFan finally dropped his debut?
My 3 year old daughter loves ‘the lighting song’ and insists on it every morning
THE PAT FINNERTY EFFECT
fuck yes! Really great record, The Price Of Smokes is possibly their best song, really hoping it gets high in triple j’s Hottest 100 next year.
Hell yes, my favourite song on the album.
These guys blow my mind. A modern punk band whose music sounds like actual authentic punk music, rather than a bunch of kids imitating their favorite punk bands. I honestly didn't think it was even possible.
The chats and Amyl and the sniffers are both very fun Aussie punk bands to listen to. However, with that being said, it’s all very straight forward and nothing that really sticks out. There’s been a whole movement of garage punk coming from Australia the last 6-7 years. I recommend checking out Gee Tee, Research Reactor Corp, Tee Vee Repairman, Ausmuteants, DRAGGS if you want to hear what else is going on down under
PAT FINNERTY PREDICTED THIS REVIEW.

Not even kidding, he really did. Beato.
Man I love the Chats, such a great band
If it’s too harsh, then you’re too soft.
"I guess down under there's been recorded instances of them assaulting riders for fare evasion"
Can confirm, I got physically thrown off more than one train by a ticket inspector as a shitty kid from the same part of Queensland a number of years ago. Never stopped me dodging the fares, though I feel that was implied by the "Shitty kid" part.
dead milkmen reference lets go
Thank you Daniel Jackson. Gotta say I didn't see you as a UA-camr but glad to see you landed on your feet.
I really appreciate that you say Brisbane in a true Australian way as opposed to Bris-Bane that you usually get! Love your work Anthony!
I was scared of a low score, with that thumbnail.
It would have got an eight...but there were no features from any rappers.....
You NEED to review skegss or hockey dad now. Now !!!
This is not a group who I ever expected you to cover in any serious aspect. I think I've fallen off their music before this record came out after going to one of their live sets and realising just how dry some of their writing was on their debut and prior, but maybe I'll give this record a shot. Wet Leg covering one of their earlier songs was a bit of a shock into realising they had some international attention but yea I'm kinda shocked.
I guess smoko was such a big meme song that it put them on the radar.
That cover of Smoko is amazing.
Not a huge punk guy, but I fell in love with this bands sound. Total 70’s/80’a throwback sound, while still seeming fresh and modern. Short, catchy, fast punk!
Fantano said Brisbane correctly
The Chats always bring the heat. When are you gonna review The Mummy Cats??
happy to see you cover these absolute legends.
FUCK YEAH THE CHATS LOVE IT 10/10
If you want that raw crisp lushing flavor and feel like you've been missing it from 2022 the Chats might just be your guys
Four comments and counting my dude, are you on it right now?
A Camel 25 pack is 39.99$. I understand their concern.
Like £15 In the UK lol
Oi saw the chats live a few months back, and they fucking ripped! Never thought I’d see them reviewed by mr melon 😳
have a listen to 'The Stiff Richards", another great Aus band
I would kill for a Chats + Amyl & the sniffers track.
The total absence of polish for me was a draw.. no major would let that get out - it seems authentic
Looks like the beastie boys album cover
Nowt wrong with FUN and funny punk. I'll take this over the anodyne posing of Sum 41 or Blink 182 any day of the week.
It's a very fun album. I prefer High Risk Behaviour tho
Saw The Chats open for the Strokes recently..... and jesus it just shows the confidence of The Strokes to have a band like that open for you because The Chats were monstrously good and inspired mayhem in the crowd
What a wicked line up..
I'll never see the strokes live. (in Winnipeg)
@@ottomattix86 I feel your pain man, I live in new zealand
God, I wish I’d been there. That sounds fucking awesome.
that sounds like a dream, when was this?
As someone from Queensland getting drunk and jamming to the chats is like breathing.
Haven’t seen an Aussie punk band this widely loved in a long time.
Everyone in Bundaberg blasts that shit.
Hah me too
What happened to Pricey, why did he leave the band ?
QUEENSLANDA
interesting pfp lol
They gave a cameo to the "This is Democracy Manifest" guy in their Dine N' Dash video, and for that alone, I'll always be a fan.
Was he enjoying a succulent Chinese meal?
@@FabulousResults HAHAHA actually he was.
It's more notable for having Geoff Corbett from Sixfthick- Australia's *real* best punk band ever - in it.
Something that I feel is lost in this review (which is in no way Fantano’s fault) is a connection and proper understanding of Australian culture. Like, yeah, some of the topics are a bit superficial, but public transport ticket inspectors are something a lot of young Australians have a bit of a gripe about so it’s a song they connect to. And the Price of Smokes, over the course of my life time the cost of cigarettes have gone up like crazy and they’re taxed to fuck here. It’s not uncommon to be out $40+ AUD for a a pack of 25s. Maybe not that deep, but it connects with the Chats’ peers which is what good punk does
Edit: also, the line “Those bastards in parliament ought to be hung by their necks”, totally not extreme in Australia. Australians talk pretty hyperbolically about politicians. I can’t really see this making anyone in their target audience bat an eyelash
Damn right, tailor-mades have gone up 400% in the last 15 years
started smoking at 13.
JPS RED 25g used to be $23
I'm 21 now and there $58
also everything you've said I think is 110% true
its hardly lost on anyone considering every teen in the west also goes through the things you mentioned.
@@SESHCRAVEN Started smoking at 13.
Peter Jackson 15's used to be $1.20
I'm 48 now and they are $555.55
also everything I said is true apart from the fact they don't even make a pack of 15 tailor mades anymore.
I started smoking at 5. Cigarettes used to be 50 cents for a pack of 100. Now I am lucky to find a pack of lucky strikes for under 1000 dollars. Welcome to australia @@Original-1UP
Glad you're covering them, this is a band I've kept at the top of my list since I first heard Smoko. I was terrified that they'd drop off after High Risk Behavior but I think this album matches it if not tops it. GET FUCKED
If people are wondering exactly how representative The Chats are of Australian culture, they are unexaggerated representatives of a good twenty percent.
Yeah pretty spot on with the 20% figure I reckon.
The other 80% do still have a bit of bogan in them somewhere. Whether they're an immigrant or born here we all have that part of us
Aren't they grammar school boys?
@@hamc9477 probably they can play instruments.
Rest of australians are unbearable middle class hipster lefties
The Chats were the ONE band UA-cam algorithm *insisted* I watch. For months it irritated me and I ignored it out of spite.
Finally, I said, fuck it I'll listen.
It was SMOKO. And God damn it was good.
You left it alone as requested.
@@FuManchu5ltr I do sit atop milk crate thrones.

Same - I remember it being at the top of my videos for a month or so.
@@under-._.-score are you perhaps a King Gizzard fan as well? That's how I reckoned it got there, anyway.
9/10 on a personal level. Love The Chats ever since I first heard Smoko. There's just something about the completely stripped down punk sound that I love. Can't wait for them to come to my neck of the woods, hoping to make it to a show on their tour come October!
Actually the album is called Get Fucked
no its called get fricked it says it in the title of the video
no u lie
You Frickin’ fricks! When will you learn?
Get funked
Really? Omg ur so smart dude
Prefer August is Falling honestly
man i never thought the chats would get such a good review, love the lads!
The record feels like if Ac/dc and negative approach had a baby that was raised by Motörhead. Love it, glad you reviewed it
Fantano covering the chats????? Dude theyve come far asf. Theyre soooooo badass live fr.
JUST NEED A 6 LITER GTR
JUST NEED A 6 LITER GTR
JUST NEED A 6 LITER GTR
I find it hard to imagine anyone outside Australia being able to get to much out of the chats (I havent listened to this new album yet), their lyrics and cadence are so specific to our culture that I was honestly so surprised that you gave it a score as high as you did, great review though.
P.S yeah ticket inspectors are literally subhuman here
Even though I’m not Australian, Eamon is a really good storyteller and I end up understanding most of it. And the music is so good I’d probably listen even if I didn’t understand
@@AnnoyingOrange420 you do get just that extra bit out of it if you know our culture though, like they're the pinnacle of bogan and it's wonderful
@@SuperNuclearUnicorn I wish I could get it more but still great stuff
Irish and love the chats but our sense of humour is very similar
@@twopointedstar facts
I like how antknee pronounced Queensland as "Queenslund"
As a Finn I base my pronounciation of Queensland on the way Eamon said it in Smoko..."Queensland, harsh summer heat"
I feel like I'd have done the same if it wasn't for Eamon's pronunciation in "Queensland, harsh summer heat" haha
@@Lurkzz same😅
@@channelname9843 thats awesome
He pronounced "Brisbane" correctly, which is a plus
Don’t listen to them but one of them was on the pat finnerty show and seemed awesome
Was hoping you’d review this one! Now I can finally stop forming my own opinion on it. Huge relief.
Anthony, you can't just chainsmoke and say "i'm on smoko, leave me alone" the entire video.
The point about the price of smokes going up, in Australia, is massive. The tax on smokes doubles every year, making a pack of 20 cost around $60 currently. That is why they're so pissed about it.
Super funny and telling that melon, an American, didn't realise that ticket inspector was about Public Transport ticket inspectors. Man imagine not having trains lol
We have trains, most of them just suck
I had a huge af smile on my face seeing Melan finally recognizing The Chats.
Fucking love The Chats, such a fantastic band. I picked up on them when they were still really small but missed that first UK tour which was stupid, but I've seen them twice subsequently so it's not a problem haha. They don't do much new, but they do the old stuff incredibly well. It's been somewhat rare in punk history that bands move more towards punk than away from it, and they've really lent into it recently. New guitarist Josh Hardy has actually strengthened the band I think, I did wonder if a change in the lineup would weaken them, but they've gone from strength to strength. Go and see them live some time, you won't be disappointed.
Based comment, based pfp

Ticket Inspectors' uniforms in Oz look kind of like cops. I always have a laugh when I see the bus cops walking about in packs of three.
I’m really hoping for your take on the absolutely AMAZING debut ep by emo punk legends “August Is Falling”. Us long time fans have waited ages for them to finally release a record and MAN did they deliver!
🔥🔥
This comment hasn't got the attention it deserves. Frownie for life here
I knew I recognized the Chats from somewhere lmao
From sat atop their milkcrate thrones to Fantano giving them a Decent 7. Love to see it
Went from a meme with Smoko to getting a 7 from Melon in an unbelievably short amount of time
Stop! The album is called "Get Fucked" so have some respect and call it what it is. With love from Australia 💌
Honestly the Chats give you that feeling that you want from punk band without it feeling rushed or overplayed there are songs on here i could see myself coming back to which is always a great thing and they even make a lot of really underrated songs on here that maybe the greater public is just a good band that made another really good album
Half of the enjoyment of this review is just aussies watching an American try to describe the chats other than “AC/DC + Minor Threat and whatever cheap substances you have lying around”
One quick bit of Australiana you're missing: the album cover for Get Fucked is a complete pisstake of Gang of Youths' Go Farther in Lightness - a critically beloved but very up-itself kind of album.
So let me set the scene, it’s 2 in the afternoon and 34 degrees…
Just listened to the album, the two songs that rlly hit me were "Ticket inspector" and "The price of smokes"
I love these kids, and I was super excited for this album, but it really surprised. I think it's one of the best punk albums I've heard in years, just killer. The Chats and Grindhouse out there saving punk.
went to see their show in amsterdam and they played all their songs in 45 minutes. it was great.
so happy to see Melon reviewing some Chats
as an Aussie who watched the blokes come from a very local fanbase it feels fuckin awesome to see this
Excited to check this band out! Just found your channel and looking forward to watching more reviews
Took you long enough to talk about the Chats, they’ve been killing it for years now
he only reviewed them now because pitchfork finally reviewed them now
@@alexmacdonald9182
I read this is the #1 record in Australia right now. Pretty impressive for a punk band. I'm fully supportive of it. I've been into 70s and 80s style punk since I was 12. I'm in my 30s now. I'm really happy to see new a band playing this style of punk and finally getting some success instead of some lame ass Epitaph or Fat Wreck Chords band.
@@milesgeary6358 nice!
Lets cut the crap - Basically its another great Aussie band . And lets not forget AC/DC - INIX - AND MANY MANY MORE WORLD ECLAMED BANDS COME OUT OF THIS GREAT COUNTRY - How's your guitar playing and record label Nerdy boy .
Sadly the chats will not be chatting along with us today there all chatted out
If you knew how much a pack of smokes cost in Australia you'd understand why they wrote a song about it. I don't even smoke anymore and it pisses me off.
I work at Woolies and feel like a criminal when I have to charge $136 for 60 smokes
I used to smoke bond street golds and a pack of 40 used to cost me 44 bucks and I quit 2 and a half years ago. Probably cost nearly 60 now
when I started smoking a 50 pack of horizon purple was $18
still smoke but yeah it’s insane how it’s gone up, and still is going up tbh
probably on account of the price of smokes
Imperial Triumphant when?
This is one of the best albums of the modern age
Hey this album isn’t actually called get fricked :(
Seen them twice this year and they have been amazing both times their energy live is unbeaten by any other band I’ve seen
Man I love the chats, we need more good punk rock around here.
The Chats feel like such a unique band without having its luster from that uniqueness ware off at the same time
Wlater
Melon you can't spend 6min refusing to say anything about the album because you're on smoko and call that a review
the chats and amyl and the sniffers are the bomb at the moment
as a fellow australian i can confirm that the chats are a modern day acdc
Oh so they've made the same album for 20 years?
You could almost say their new album is an AC/DC CD
no but ok
@@tylerbailey9329 They're just copying the second greatest band in history :)
I don't find anything interesting at all in this album. Same old stuff, different album cover. It's not the worse thing in the world to be "punk" but still be a little creative... Or is it?
That's my personal main problem with the chats, they're great at what they do but just not that creative or progressive. Hard to complain about classic punk done so well but I wish they'd consider some weirder ideas
Kudos for the correct pronunciation of Brisbane!
The pronunciation of QLD though..😕
The chats are amazing. Raw, fast, mean and wreckless punk. 🤘🤘 Live they are awesome to see. Crazy band, i cant get enough of these blokes.. rock on bitchess!!
Why couldn’t you give them a 6 melon? Then I could use the “that’s a 9 down under” joke, come on Melon mate play the game.
Saw the chats at the leadmill in Sheffield, fuckin sick nite
