Courtroom Scenes lead to some of the most intense and memorable moments in film, and they also provide a big challenge to the filmmaker: how do you capture all that drama in a giant courtroom with tons of people? Any film has to use various cinematic techniques very carefully to pull it off. So let's see how a few films do it.

A Bug's Life only grows more relevant by the day.
I genuinely do not understand this meme but I've heard of A Bug's Life more this past year than I ever have. It's like it's the best movie ever made lmfao.
@@TheRobloxianTacoLord it's not really a meme, more of a reflection of the current political climate
The 180 degree rule is one of those things you don't realize is happening unless it's done wrong. Same thing with continuity and many others I'm sure!
Yeah, special effects are another such example. The really good ones you don't even realize they're effects.
Though in 180's case I'm not sure it's only when it's wrong. The Shinning example is one instance where it's quite noticeable when you first watch it but that doesn't mean it's wrong. I can think of some old Japanese films from like the 50s or the 60s who break that rule and put the camera where it's not "supposed" to go, for instance, while shooting a dialogue scene after a while putting the camera between the characters and having them basically look at the camera as if the camera is where the other character is supposed to be.
That angle was also noticeably used in the recent Moonlight film. And I'm not sure I'd call those instances wrong.
But yeah, often when it's done you're like, wtf just happened, it's disorientating and weird.
What's the quote? If you do things right it'll be like you've done nothing at all
Apparently, according to real lawyers and judges, My Cousin Vinny is the most accurate courtroom scene in a movie.
Lol
Do you have a source? I would love to read more about that lol.
@@DoctorandtheDoll watch LegalEagle video on the movie.
It's surprisingly accurate, but not the *most* accurate. Especially considering the People vs OJ is featured in this video, which is far more true to life
@@bassett_green
Eh, to be fair, the HBO miniseries "The People vs OJ Simpson" was a biopic about a real court case and had plenty of more screen time to flesh out the details of the case and the court proceedings, compared to the fictional movie My Cousin Vinnie.
I find the slower pace of the narration in this video to be more relaxing and engaging when compared to some of your older ones, great job!
It was slow?
Shakspear said the whole universe is one big courtroom that’s wisdom right there
*world *stage
Nah mayne i'm p sure he said the whole globe's a game
Cambria Kilgannon he said a lot of crap he wouldn’t shut up
Not a film, but I love how the Ace Attorney games depict the court. The original trilogy has pretty much five camera angles in court; three are from the judges perspective, one looking directly at the judge, and one from behind the witness to see the whole court. Sure it breaks the 180° rule and it's disorienting until you figure out where everything is supposed to be, but the games were originally payable on game boy advance. They were made incredibly efficiently, as they give all the information necessary. The Judge never speaks off camera, and Godot's coffee comes from literally nowhere.
OJ got away with murder. Also, My Cousin Vinny is a fantastic underrated movie.
"How I'd do it "
1. Obviously.
2. It's not underrated. People just haven't seen it.
Yeah my cousin Vinny is awesome
While technically not a “courtroom” scene, all of the case-briefing scenes, in David Fincher’s Social Network, are arguably the most powerful judge, jury and executioner scenes ever seen in film or tv.💯
Ayn_Rand_McNally. YES.I just watched that a month ago and know exactly what you mean
Case briefing?
Your videos are so rich and enlightening. I’ve never known therefore cared much about filmmaking techniques but you have singlehandedly inspired me to be a filmmaking nerd. Even your segues to commercials are deft. I actually stay tuned to them and feel like I’m actually getting something out of them. Just thank you for changing the way I watch everything.
Kinda disappointed u didn’t use a better call saul scene
Yeah. I mean I understand from the point of view that the channel is focused on film, not TV, but the whole trial at the "Chicanery" episode is easily among the greatest court scenes ever portrayed in any medium.
what about The Hateful Eight as a comparable scenario to the court room. you only have one room, and multiple stories to tell within.
It's not a scene as much as it's 4 hours of a couple people eating stew and talking.
Then Sam Jackson gets his big black dingus blasted off.
A colossal start with a close up of Marisa Tomei, tell me more...
she's an absolute stunner
How dare you guys left out Legally Blonde!!! one of the most iconic courtroom scene
This reminds me of the way Rian Johnson talks about filming the group scenes in Knives Out
Yes! I got an inkling of that, too.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We are tonight's entertainment! I only have one question: Where is Harvey Dent?"
The Bee Movie also has an A+ court room scene
oh god that scene
Why do you have a video called “how to change your phone’s screensaver” but it tells you how to change your background image?
Ehh id give it a B

On Cinema at the Cinema filmed a masterclass in courtroom moviemaking. It was over five glorious electric hours. Check out the “Trial of Tim Heidecker” (By the coward Bruce Delgado)
The trial of Tim Heidecker is an absolute masterpiece...
"Approach the....approach the bench?"
Is it actually watchable? Something 5 hours is daunting
The Dumb Dog incredibly so-but they also edited down into five fifteen minute highlight videos!
@@thedumbdog1964 The thing is, the trial itself is the conclusion of 9 seasons of On Cinema at the Cinema so a lot of the stuff they talk about would only make sense if you've watched the series up to that point. But it's definitely worth it in my opinion. The average episode would be less than 10 minutes and watching the lunacy unfold is brilliant. The trial of Tim Heidecker is very well acted and rewards long time viewers of On Cinema at the Cinema with amazing in-jokes and surreal call backs. I give it 5 bags of popcorn and one of those small hammers that judges use.
Thanks for making these!!!! Please don’t ever delete been helpful to me for years
I will watch any video with My Cousin Vinny as its thumbnail
My Cousin Vinny is such a legendary classic. I'm now gonna watch the courtroom reveal scene for the hundredth time!
Been rewatching Boston Legal this month, and I think it has the finest courtroom scenes anywhere in drama. David E Kelley and his team had some kind of secret sauce that made every single courtoom scene, with the mix of dolly movements and handheld zooms absolutely breathtaking. Somehow feeling grandly scripted while at the same time improvised and hectic, I don't think I've seen anything else like it. With the exception of his other legal show since then, Harry's Law. I pray for Kelley's return to legal drama. Until then, my rewatch of Boston Legal is an absolute treat, and it definitely won't be the last!
Great breakdown.
for a great courtroom film, I would recommend the The Trial of the Chicago Seven, now on Netflix
I can appreciate dramatic, exciting courtroom scenes. But something I don't know if I've ever seen in a film is a scene constructed to convey the interminable dullness of most real life court proceedings (though the Rick and Morty reading of a court transcript comes close), and I think this kind of more realistic portal of courtroom proceedings might deserve an analysis too.
This one video taught me more than my entire “Intro to Cinema” college class
Nice video and so interesting! But this quote about the courtroom scenes is from Nelson Cragg, who shot The people vs OJ: “The courtroom was where we had the most cameras, because there were numerous people to cover and so many angles to shoot,” Cragg tells us. “We had four cameras running at all times. We laid down these big sheets of plywood with a Masonite cover, which allowed the dolly grip and the camera operators to move around freely. It enabled us to do a lot of shots quickly."
In the whole Interview he explains what cameras they use, how the different locations worked, etc. He doesn't mention cranes at all. If I understand the article in Sound and Picture correctly, they used three dollys and a steady cam for the court scenes.
One of my favorite recurring SNL sketches in recent years was "Maine Justice," but the camera staging always bothered me. The set was correctly designed, but the judge and the principals at their podiums - even though the actors were looking at each other - were always looking in the same direction. And they did the sketch three times, but never changed how it was shot. And in terms of the crane shot in a courtroom scene, I was expecting the most famous single shot in "The Verdict" - Paul Newman's reaction to, well, The Verdict.
I wish someone would bring Marine justice to some of these idiots out here attacking Cat Stevens Legacy...
Youve always been my favourite because your not some random posh nobody who pretends he knows shit and cries at your feet to sound entertaining, you just know your shit
The GOAT has returned
Watching old law and order for the courtroom line and impressed how they always include the jury!
HE'S BACKKKKKKK
Great video.
What i love about TKAM’s courtroom scene is that it’s true to the book. Scout says the courtroom was so full there were people standing in rows in the back just to get a peak. Getting to see that on film really adds to the intensity of the trial. (My Cousin Vinny is my favorite courtroom movie ever though. Legally Blonde as well)
“Chicanery” Better Call Saul has my favorite court room scenes (so far, because I haven’t seen season 5)
I definitely saw the full video before commenting here
Dope
Although it's not a Movie may I recommend for your consideration, Harvey Birdman Attorney At Law.
Great video, although I have to admit that is bothering me a bit that there is no mention of Better Call Saul. I understand that the channel focuses on film, but the episode called "Chicanery" (in Season 3) has what is easily one of the best courtroom scenes ever portrayed in any medium, ever.
Bring in the dancin' lobstahs!

Okay, I love your stuff man, but did you just straight-faced recommend Southland Tales?
You do you, but I just have to know if this is real.
@@robe2187 I LOVE Southland Tales, but it is NOT for everybody. If you can understand David Lynch having his own rabid audience...well, Southland Tales has its own audience too, and the people who DON'T like it...generally hate it. Southland Tales is a beautiful, hilarious, surreal TRAINWRECK of a movie from the writer/director of Donnie Darko. It's such a quotable movie, too, which is why I can't wait for it to eventually get a large enough cult following for the lines to be better known.
Broadchurch Season 2 has court room scenes with some nice crane shots
Here in Israel we have made a short movie called sham tov heavy or שם טוב האבי which has a wonderful court scene

Your explanation on the blocking of a moving 180 line is super confusing. I bet if you had a top down rudimentary motion graphic that animated alongside the scenes (think football plays), I would have grasped it a lot more.
love your videos! some constructive critisim, i think your thumbnails could be better, maybe hire someone to do them?
The most important question is: Why is Jason Isaacs a jury member in "A few good men"? 😂 0:37 min
Wow, I'm a bit baffled that southland tales is an amazing movie apparently?! It's been a bit since I saw it, but it seemed incoherent gobbledegook to me. Maybe I should watch it again with 2020 eyes. I somehow doubt that the fournicating cars make more sense now, but I'm willing to try. o.O
Sorry this has not much to do with the video, but that accessment kinda baffled me.
Great video!
Yeah this is what brought me to the comments. I had to rewind it like "did I just hear that?" were being trolled.
I wish you did an analysis on the bee movie to see how a courtroom scene can fail.
Southland Tales is controversial to say the least 😅

2:04 What episode of "The Good Wife" is that from?
I’m not sure but I know legaleagle did a reaction to it, so you might be able to find out from going to his video!
I never watched the show, but going off of the fact that it looks like Chris Sarandon played the judge, it might be s2e1 "Taking Control."
"Nobody used crane shots more than The People Vs OJ Simpson"
-proceeds to show a montage of dolly and steadicam shots-
Are you sure those were on a crane? Got a source?
Funny, I thought the same and found an Interview for Sound and Picture with Nelson Cragg who shot the whole series. If I understand correctly they used three dollys and a steadicam for the court scenes, no crane.
@@ZebraJess92 That's certainly what it looks like to me. Careless error for video to make.

Oof, one big drawback of crane shots: they give me motion sickness if the video stutters from mismatched frame rates
