- If you don't how to make a living hinge then this is the video for. This time we will take a look at how to design a living hinge using only basic functions in Inkscape or other drawing program and then cut this design with your laser. The concepts described here can be used to create custom containers, engraved custom book covers and even a unique pencil holder for your desk.
So join me and together we can learn hoe to make these very useful living hinges.

Thank you for this extremely informative video. I really appreciate the help.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for teaching how to actually make the hinge, vs go to this site and punch numbers in. the sites may not always be there, and it is good to learn the underlying principals.
I think it is important to understand the first principles of everything. This way you can be empowered to design your own thing rather than relying on someone else
Happy New Year, Steve! Did you use the same slow speed/high power settings on Re3 as when we are cutting out items on our 3mm birch?
Happy One Year Anniversary. So glad you made the decision to help us all!
To cut the slots in. The hinges, use the normal settings you would use to cut the material
Thanks for making this video
It's my pleasure
Thank you, Sir.
Hope it was helpful
Thanks again
Always welcome
Very cool! 2 questions: 1) what thickness wood was this and 2) how do you know how big to make your living hinge?
For this I use 3mm birch plywood. As far as the hinge width is concerned, these can be surprisingly small, but you will need a few “lines” along the length to ensure maximum flex
thanks
You're welcome!
Hi! How do you calculate the distance between the lines? Mine is 1/4 of a 30mm Radio circumference
I didn’t really do much calculation for this example. The point here is that if you cut several lines into a solid material you can give it flexibility to bend how you want.
Thank you for this! Did you make the lines 3mm apart because that's how thick your wood is? I use Home Depot's PureBond 1/4in which isi actually about 4.3(ish)mm thick. Should I move the lines farther apart, closer, or leave them the same as you have here?
For quarter inch plywood you might want to still keep the lines closer together so there is more flexibility. I’ve only ever done this with 3mm plywood
Would solid hardwood work for a living hinge or is plywood better?
If it's thin enough it might work. You really want the layers of opposing grain that hard wood provides though. Solid would would likely crack if it dries out too much.
How do you decide the radius, the length of the hinge, the gap between the hinges? Is there any thumb rule or a formula that can be used for a variety of jobs ?
There isn’t a specific formula for this but there are natural radius limit of the joint. You can improve this by putting the cut line rows closer together. The length of hinge will be at least the thickness of the thing you are trying wrap around.
It’s easier to do this with a CAD system because most can measure the distance around curves. This helps you figure out the hinge length you need
Cool!. Hello Steve, Can you do a 3d grayscale laser engraving video?. Thanks!
I’m always up for a good video. What are you looking for? I did a video a while back about engraving photos? Is that what you’re trying to do?
@@SteveMakesEverything
I recently watched a video where it shows how to do 3d engraving. I understood the concept but this youtuber use a different laser engraving and I was wondering if you can do it with your full spectrum muse.
I leave the link below. Thanks!

Does inkscape save or export stl files?
No. STL files are 3D files and Inkscape deals only with 2D
could this same thing be done on 1/4 ply instead of 1/8" ?
It could though it would be pretty hard to flex.
@@SteveMakesEverything it has to go around a 24” dia circle
@@Darnic-Fab should be fine for this
@@SteveMakesEverything thank you for your time
