I feel like wills speech is the reason Mike is the paladin because all their friends are outcasts and Mike the most "traditional" but he welcomed the guy who people called gay, he welcomed the guy with the disability, the girl with powers and the black guy. This is the bare minimum but not during that era. Mike is the friend that welcomes you and treats you like a human, like everyone else. An example being meeting El his instinct was to help her even if he didn't who she was. Someone like Lucas or Dustin would've taken her to a local police station but Mike takes her home. He takes her home to get a change of clothes and maybe some food before thinking of how to help her. The speech Will gave relates to Will because he was the weirdo but Mike didn't drop him, he stuck by him and accepted him for who he is. Will lost that when moving because he became the outcast again but no one welcomed him. Mike is a rare special person (FOR THAT TIME) and he doesn't realise that. He doesn't realise that him welcoming the outcasts is out of character for a guy with his background. Like he could've easily been a regular kid, not picked on or bullied. Or that's how I see it.

People who say Mike likes her because of her powers are insane. When El uses her powers she bleeds. Seeing someone you love bleeding and fatigued will make you sad. He doesn't try to stop her but he obviously doesn't like it. He doesn't like her over exerting herself.
I feel like Mike and Hopper were where she belonged as well as Joyce but Joyce losing Hopper probably messed with her so she was a shell of her former self. So El had lost pretty much all her comforts and went to a dark place. Yes she had Will and Jonathan but they weren't close until they moved away distance from all their friends, partners and their home made them all close.

I have a question. How do males and females bond with each other? I don't see how men and women can bond (especially romantically) with each other. Men and women think very differently from each other. It seems like it's impossible for men and women to emotionally connect with each other. Women do emotionally connect with other women, better than men do. Women can build incredible friendships and become very close to each other in a way men can't bond, and science shows that women can bond very well with each other. Generally, women are even more social than men are. After something bad happens, a woman quickly rushes to talk to all of her female friends to get support, whereas a man can isolate himself and grief alone.
