- Maryland Farm & Harvest visits Deer Run Farm in Emmitsburg where Allison Rostad and Josh Stewart raise and sell five heritage chicken breeds that produce eggs in a wide range of colors. These chickens produce eggs in colors including light blue, light tan, dark brown, terracotta, and greenish/brown. Customers from smaller commercial farms to backyard flock owners and from as far away as Alaska and Hawaii purchase chicks from Deer Run Farm. Allison and Josh then show how they prepare chicks for shipping to customers via the U.S. Mail.

We are excited to be getting Welsummer chicks from Deer Run Farm later this month.
I got 2 hens and came here to 100% make sure that they were Americana cause the lady I got an from didn't know what kind they were she had like 300 chickens. I have been getting blue-ish teal colored eggs, today one of them was more of a sky blue but all of them have been pretty colored. And I had a hunch they were amaricana due to the egg color cause they can lay green, blue, and "pink" eggs the lady said her birds are mainly brown egg layers so I got lucky with choosing my birds ig 😂

My farm is right down the street and i can ensure you that our mail service is absolutely horrible!! Poor chickens would be better off to just walk!!
They are only sent to the post office, where you immediately pick them up. You and the hatchery determine the day they will be picked up depending on distance needed for shipping, i.e. Wednesday or Thursday.
I am definitely purchasing my pullets from Deer Run Farm as I live here in Maryland. Even though I cancelled my order with them because as a first time chicken enthusiast, I thought I could "reserve pullets for spring" 🤣🤣. They were professional and prompt and refunded me same day!! I can't wait to place my order next spring.

I would rather have chicks that weren’t injected with anything. Just buy local farm chickens
Im just concerned with the same needle being shared. Aside from contamination needles lose sharpness after 1 use

You guys are really wonderful. The way you handle the chickens and inject them with medicines is really nice. Stress free chickens good eggs and meat as well. Just a query tho that y don't yourl allow the chicken to sit on the eggs and give birth to the chick's naturally than put them in the incubator

I was wondering the same thing!
They are healthy at this point and not germy. With as many chick's as they are hatching out, it isn't feasible to change needles.
