Dahlias, or any flower that's too short for a 'cut flower' still brings me much joy in a tiny vase right next to the sink. Like you Jessie, I cherish the little joys from the garden. Sometimes that's all I get. I have just declared WAR on the HATED Aussie possums who savaged my lonely 4 beetroots that were showing promise. Badgers - possums. Different enemies. same battle. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it, but your videos keep me going, so THANK-YOU!! Cheers from Oz!!
I live in the south of British Columbia 🇨🇦 and my basil grows wonderfully outdoors. Even my cilantro goes outdoors among other plants that will partially shade it from the burning summer sun. I grew some lovely holy basil and I dried it. I have enough for a cup of tea. Lol!
I can grow basil outside successfully in southern Wisconsin, USA (Zone 5). I start seeds on a heat mat in April, plant out the starts on June 1. Location gets 6 hours of sun. I collect all the leaves I want & Sept 1 gather some dead flowers for seed. In spring, I spread some dead flowers on a white plate to find the teeny tiny black seeds among the chaff & start over again. I crumble dried basil into my winter pizza dough, makes it speckled and fancy lol
We have grown several from seed this year Cinnamon being my favourite. They have done well outside in West Yorkshire but are now in the greenhouse. Loved the programme last night as usual but Covid has struck this location and we can't get to ours so we are frustrated. Just when we needed cheering up there you are taking us on a surprise journey. Cheers Jasmine
Hi I’ve grown basil from shop bought.Taken cuttings and put them between my tomatoes along with marigolds outside. We were the only plot that didn’t get completely hit with the blight and I have just harvested the last of tomatoes today to ripen at home. Our allotment is in Wembley.
Hi Jessie, I live in North Kingston/Ham and grow loads of basil/ outdoor tomatoes/ cucumbers in my south-facing garden… the basil grown in pots seems to do best, and obviously needs full sun and protection from strong winds… I have grown basil from seed, but find supermarket basil potted up into good free-draining compost works best…still have several plants on the go now, which I have only just brought indoors. We are still frost free, although it did drop to 3C a few days ago. Really enjoy your channel and have learned a lot… happy autumn gardening 😊
oh brilliant, if it grows in kingston/ham it must grow in richmond :D And funny you say that about the shop plants, so many people have said they get a better result from that! Happy autumn Gardening :D
Hi Jess and Mum, lovely tour of Kew Gardens with your lovely description of all the plants. Nice harvest of vegetables and planting some beetroot for winter too. It is has been a lot colder here in Wallasey but, lots of rain too. Great video update, thanks for sharing and take care 😊
I'm of no use at all, haha, the one I know is the bishop of Llandaff which is the little one you don't want for cutting, and I'm crap at growing basil anywhere🤣. We had two glorious days over the weekend, and now we're in a wet gale, if there is such a thing. The video was marvellous - they're never too long 😉🙂
Have grown basil from seed outside here in rainy Lancashire, not this year though, it has rained non-stop since early July. Previous years' harvests were good enough to have made pesto, should be a doddle in sunny Richmond !
Yep ... basil outside in the ground is almost bomb proof and so much healthier looking than any I've kept in pots. If you keep nipping out the tips you can get a veritable bush! My plot is in Oxford.
Yes, You can grow basil outside after starting them off in polytunnel. This year i grew a 12 foot by 4 foot bed of basil and have photo to prove it. It was genovese basil. Shame pine nuts are so expensive for making pesto! I live in Hampshire so probably similar if not cooler conditions than Richmond. I also bunged in carrots and i think the smell of the basil has the added benefit of keeping carrot root fly away.
Fantastic, i'm definitely going to give it a go next year. I grow the coriander around my carrots for that reason, i guess the basil would do the same job!
Yes Jess in Tasmania, does well not as big and bushy as the one in kew gardens but hig enough to have enough for the two of us. That sample patch looks like square foot garden example, a lovely lady in arizona has a channel Growing in the garden and a brilliant garden using that process
Oh my. Watching your video from my hols in Cyprus. (27 degrees here 😎)Hoping my butternut squash’s are going to be ok till I get back. Concerned the temperature drop may have done them in. Fingers crossed they’re ok till I get back 😬🤞
Since you are lucky enough to have access to T&M seeds, do try Barbara's Butternut squash next year. By far the best butternut I have found in 50 years of gardening. Every category -taste, shape, vigor (we have squash vine borders here) is exceptional.
Biblical rains here so jobs are between downpours 😮. No frost here yet but never say never it’s all up to Mother Nature. Happy gardening ladies, Ali 🌧️🌧️🌧️🇨🇦
Basil outside? I'll grow your basil if you grow my beets! I'm garbage at getting beets.. my soil hates them apparently... and thanks for the Kew trip, that was lovely!
Jessie, when I saw your bit about the aubergine, I paused the video and ran out to check mine. I thought they were on their last leg, but rallied in the last few weeks, blooming as if their life depended on it. Lol, I have a few on my African round. We made eggplant stuffing with them. It has eggplant (diced and soaked in salt water to remove the bitter), pine nuts, bread, garlic, EVOO, crumbled feta, diced onion, diced tomatoes, cooked breakfast sausage crumbles, fresh cracked pepper and Italian seasoning (or the fresh trio from the garden. Bake until the outer bits are golden and crunchy, feta melts and eggplant cooked. Top with grated Parmesan and/or mozzarella and let melt for another five minutes. It is especially nice this time of year when the weather just changes.
I have successfully grown basil last year, I did buy the living herb pot from supermarket and split it and transplanted and they have done superbly and attracted a lot of bees. They also went on until the first frost. This year I grew them directly from seed but I only sowed them in August and they are still alive in a vertical planter. we are in Woking, Surrey, we have had 2 degrees last night and they are still going. tiny, but going. As for dahlias my favourite is Kelsey Annie Joy.
Interesting! Lots of people saying the most successful was when they split the shop stuff. I've done that before but never stuck it outside. Will definitely be giving it a go next year!
I have success at growing basil outdoors here Jess, I'm in the south UK. Sometimes mine even re-seeds itself and comes back next year. I did originally start off with plants from the shops and split them, but always grow from seed now as I find the plants are much better. I start off indoors and grow under grow lights and put outside in June.
Ah, i'd love to get to the self-seeded basil stage! its worked with the coriander finally this year :D Interesting how many people are saying the most success they've had is with with split shop stuff, but you think the from seed plants are stronger? Which variety do you grow?
Hi Jess I live not far from you in Sunbury a stone throw away from the old Adrian Hall garden centre on snakey Lane. I've grown Basil outdoors but I think it depends on the Sumner we have. It wasn't good this year but was fantastic last year in all that heat. Hope this helps hun
Thanks for a visit to Kew. Of course we grow basil outside here in the states zone 6b but that is not helpful for you in London. It reseeds itself which is a bonus.
I'm not sure I can say I've grown basil but I bought a supermarket pot and divided it and put one plant in each bit of a strawberry tower. Outside in South Yorkshire they grew/are growing fine and are now flowering. I figure the seeds come next (yes?) & then next year repeat it. Gonna take cuttings for inside too but they tend to either die or bring in every fungus gnat or fruit fly in the world into my house.
Hi Jessie my recommendations for dahlias is sweet surprise & lucky number which I got from Wilko a couple of years back this year bought some from Sarah raven and I would recommend molly raven it’s not stopped flowering
Lovely long video, the weather looked so smashing there. I like the Water Lily Dahlia called Caballero, yellow with orange inner petals. Those peppers looked SO PRETTY and please tell Lil to not mind that nasty Tom, although he is a stunner. Love to the Girlies 💚🐔🌱
I cleared my plot (in Barnet) at the weekend (the remainder of the climbing beans, toms, courgette, uchiki kuri, masses of calendula, and some fennel that had long gone to seed), then yesterday I sowed cover crops (winter rye, vetch and field beans) on half of the beds. I’m chuffed to be so organised this year, and the compost heap is now looking extremely happy too :)
Lovely mix as always - great to see Kew at this time of year especially for those of us who are hundreds of miles from London! Also wonderful to see you balancing the autumnal clear-up jobs with a view of what's new or still productive (fab range of peppers!) Know exactly what you mean about low picking of dwarf french beans; rather than compost, why not rip the plants out by the roots and give the girlies a high protein green treat? :)
Thanks Anthony. And i will try the girls on the beans, definitely! They are so bloomin fussy these 4 little hens ahah! Never had chickens that turn their nose up at so many things but not tried them on beans.
I grow basil outside in a north facing garden here in the midlands. Always does well and makes a 30-40cm bush. I divide supermarket basil pots up and they romp away.
I purchased some Thai basil from the box store and planted it.I grew so big WOW! It was beautiful and the bees loved it.We got high winds and it got beat until it was almost out of the ground .🎉
@@JessieatPlot37 YES! It was so gorgeous. I purchased so many Thai basil seeds. Lol I will be growing it everywhere ( garden and my landscape). And the bees go mad for it.
Yes Jess I grew basil outside with my toms it was a crowded permaculture type beds. They didn’t grow hug but it grew and went to seed it’s on flower now but prob be gone next time I go cos of frosts. All our squash have gone to frost etc🙋🏻♀️it was just the normal Italians basil. I also grew it at home in my herb trough. Outside
I'm in southampton and grow most of my basil (green, red and thai,) outside - always works, even this year with the cold wet summer. I grow some in the sunniest and the more shady areas just to hedge my bets, and always grow some with my outdoor tomatoes. 😊
I'm from Bath, Pennsylvania USA, and my favorite cut flower dahlias are called Lindsay Michelle from Brecks, they are pink and yellow catus type peddles. I've been cutting them all season. If there's any way I could mail some tubers to you, just let me know how and where.
I used the same butternut squash seeds in two separate places in my garden. One got one squat squash and the other two huge beautifully shaped squash. Weird.
Hi Jessie, Next year, on your recommendation. i will be growing Japanese black truffle! My best (cooking) tom this year for flavour was Feo de Rio Gordo (RS) Magnificent! Biggest was 675g. I will grow them forever! Regards Vic
Hi Jesse I define agree with you on the green beans!! I now just plant pole beans that are climbers 🧗🏻♀️😂😂 I found a new stringless variety that are quite long & delicious!! I’ll write the name of them tomorrow!! Much love ❤️ from Kentucky 🐎🇺🇸
For Dahlias try Labyrinth, kelvin floodlight, Black Jack, Bridezilla, the famous Cafe au Lait, cornel bronze, and there’s one called Cheers that seems perfect for you.
Hello Jessie, The end of another garden season is coming to a close. For us it was very hot summer watering almost every day. Tomatoes and peppers were the winners here. My very First eggplant / aubergene ever!! We still have not had a frost yet and not in the forecast for about another 10 days. So I still have tomatoes ripening on the vine!! So I am closing all the other plant out and will be planting garlic this week. Your video was fun seeing the garden at the end of the season. I liked the field trip also you always find cool places to go to. I always grow basil out side I start with one plant and there’s a prune and pinch off pieces. I just re-plant them somewhere else so as the first plant gets very bushy lots of little plants get started everywhere else. This year for the first time I had something that ate all the basil on my deck but none in the garden. Very strange. Anyway, thank you for the video. Look forward to seeing you next week. Bye for now.
😂It’s been a crazy week and I’ve watched your video over a dozen times only finally making it to the end with seeing everything. Your trips to various sights now has me applying for a passport to visit. I grew 7 kinds of basil outside this summer and it dies back the same time that leaves start falling from the trees. Dahlias won’t grow for me 😢 not even in a pot. Thank you for all your videos and give Lily an extra treat for me having to put up with that intruder. 😂
Lovely video as always…thank you…a timely reminder that I must pick all my vulnerable veggies. No use re outdoor basil…or dahlias really…except that the orangey pom-pom looking one is mighty like one I got for my husband for Easter in ‘22. He was prediabetic so I was avoiding chocolate…but the name was either something to do with Easter, eggs or chocolate!!!😀😀😀hehe not a lot of help! Jinxy
A visit to Kew is on my bucket list , but if it doesn’t happen at least you’ve taken me. THANKS. Great vlog, what a weird season I still have sweet peas on the go. 😊👍💐
Hi Jess, thank you for another lovely video. I’m in the far SE corner of the UK and no problem growing Basil outside. We’ve a different soil to you but similar climate. It’s still going strong. I simply intersperse it with the outdoor toms. Worth a go.
Hi Jess, I've seen many people in the US that puts heaters on their polis to extend a bit the season or help with the ripening of the fruits already there. Just a though. BTW. I've grown basil outside always and they grow magnificent but they should be in a warm spot but sheltered from the scorching temperatures, specially the midday ones. They are the best tomato companion, because tomatoes will provide some shade and the basil will keep some of the tomato plagues at bay.
Hi Jessie 😁. I grew a dahlia last year called 'Juliette' very pretty....I saved the tubers gave a couple away and growing again this year (just started sprouting)
Volume is okay, your garden is still looking good great harvest and the flowers are so beautiful in your garden I pick about 4 squash from my garden I was so happy and so many hot peppers but can’t get those sweet peppers to grow this year have to work on the bed
Love your vlog and watching all the things you grow wish we had the variety of plants and seeds here in the US! I also wish we had allotments here such a fantastic way to get people in cities to garden. I can no longer have chickens so give your girly whirlies a snuggle for me from Oregon USA!
Hi Jessie, this year I grew basil from seed at the allotment, straight into soil. Not massive plants but good germination and very strong. Not as tender as the ones under cover. Caught by frost immediately at the weekend. Great for pesto. My friend gave me a bouquet of dahlias recently with firework flowers they are sublime! ❤ Happy autumn. Ps had 43 butter nut squash all decent but none huge. 😊 Vickie x
Hi Jessie, we had our first frost up here in southern Scotland 4 days ago. I got everything in! My cobra beans were amazing this year, I must have picked pounds and the freezer is full. Chard is always on the go here too. My cabbages were great and so were the Runner beans. Beetroot is always a failure for me along with Radishes. I dont know why. Your plot looks set to go for Winter and I hope it's not going to be a repeat of last year. We had -14 deg here for about a week. My bones can't take it lol. So you know what they say....Winter drawers on!! Cheers Jessie and Mum!!
Hey Jessie - I grow basil outside, both the Italian and Greek. I am just up the river from you, in Buckinghamshire. Some years are better than others, but it's definitely worth a try!
I too enjoy surprise gifts in the gardens 😊 also, you have inspired me to grow more of a variety of peppers next season 😊 I always grow basic 3 or 4 types
A bell, a jalapeño, a banana are always what I grow and save seeds every year. But have tried a couple different varieties in the past. I'm going to try a few more types next season along with my usuals 😊
I'm in Essex and yes I have grown basil outside. I grow it in my garden and at the allotment. The allotment one's got really big and busy. Its definitely worth giving it a try and see how you get on. 😊
Hi Jess (and mum) , have a look here Jack grows and breeds some wonderful varieties of dahlia. I think the collerettes are particularly good for Garden, Cut flower and the bees as they are open centred. I used to grow for showing but now I'm just growing for me and apart from a couple for old times sake I'm going over to these in my Garden. some of my favourites are Ashpire Fancy, Clare de Lune and Teesbrooke Audrey but there are a few on there. Also good old Bishop of LLandaff takes some beating ( or the Bishops children seed ... fun to grow and you never know what you are going to get).
I will, thank you! And i'll look up those varieties! I know BofLl - thats a gorgeous one, such a classic! And we had a few bishops children growing last year (thats were given to us) but they were very young and died in the cold. Might see if i can get hold of some more!
I second Teesbrooke Audrey. it’s my first year growing Dahlias this year and I bought Teesbrooke Audrey and Kelsey Annie Joy. TA has beautiful lilac and white flowers and is going absolutely bonkers in the flower department even now. I’ve been disappointed with the KAJ though, just had two flowers and has had one bud on it for the past month that hasn’t opened, not sure why it’s so unhappy when it’s literally next to the TA that hasn’t stopped flowering.
Jesse, I also recommend Halls of Heddon for dahlias. Bought a cut flower collection of 5 mini plants this year and they have flowered their socks off since July. Sadly the recent frost has nipped them now but they produced dozens of quality cut flowers. 😊
Your chard looks beautiful and yummy 😋 and your girly whirlies are so cute! If I was your age again I think I still wouldn't get as much done as you do ❤ cheers! ❤😊
Hello...🐞 basil loves the sun however, it's weird as the best I grew was in part shade under some herb plants, loves company.Think different varieties could be worth looking at. I live in North Yorkshire. First frosts couple of nights ago, feels so early, like yourselves had to get prepared. Love your videos they are a true joy.💖Thank You.
Basil is one of those plants that is strange to grow, keep a trial and era under various plants. I spilt seed it grew really well, then sprinkled it carefully poor germination, that year I bought it and planted it in and around.
20:22 I'm growing Cima di Rapa for the first time and I was a bit suspicious that I had been given the wrong seeds. Was thinking they might be mustard greens or something because my plants have huge leaves and haven't put out any flower stems. But yours looks really large too so maybe mine are OK. It's just all the videos I've watched on Cima di Rapa growing and recipes (mostly from the USA) the plants look small and look like nice small bunches of green flowers with plenty of flower stems. Mine are a 40 day one but perhaps because I planted quite late they haven't had enough warmth to start putting out flowers. Not sure. Think I'm going to buy seeds elsewhere though and try again. I've eaten some and they were pretty good though so perhaps shouldn't complain.
If your looking for dahlias hall of heddon is the only place I’d ever recommend as it’s a specialist nursery, you can go for pot tubers, mini plants or garden ready
Hello Jessie! Yes, I have successfully grown basil outside fending slugs and snails galore! I am in NW London... I was not very optimistic but I was pleasently surprised. I would love to hear your selection for cut flowers next week and whats your plan for those... Have a lovely week! M
Cheers! I think they are gorgous the little one, but i really want tall chaps in the raised beds! Ah, i feel for your possum problem :/.
I live in the south of British Columbia 🇨🇦 and my basil grows wonderfully outdoors. Even my cilantro goes outdoors among other plants that will partially shade it from the burning summer sun. I grew some lovely holy basil and I dried it. I have enough for a cup of tea. Lol!
Gorgeous!
Blaireau is badger in French. Love that word.
great word :D

He's gorgeous isn't he!

Re the Dahlias. Great Silence and Arabian Night two favourites this year. Really enjoy watching your “programmes”.
I love your long videos. Don't stop being you
:) thanks Jenni
Yes. I grew basil outside this year in the South east just north of the down s behind Brighton. I was amazed! It was fantastic with enormous leaves
Great! even in this pants summer?
Yes. I have always struggled to grow it in pots indoors in the past. It was reading Charles Dowdings book No Dig that inspired me to try.
I sowed the variety Sweet Green on 27 May indoors and transplanted 6 to 10 cm apart nto peat few compost in a large pot
Hi. I’m in Northampton and I grew basil quite successfully outside in a pot.
fantastic, thank you!
Te frost arrived two days ago! The gin and the tonic is now officially stored in the shed! Save the planet!
Oh no! the sad day that the gin and tonics get put away!! :D
EDIT: No! I realise you mean its being kept cold out in the shed!! excellent!!
We have grown several from seed this year Cinnamon being my favourite. They have done well outside in West Yorkshire but are now in the greenhouse. I've never tried cinnamon basil! i think i have some seed for it though...
Oh pants, the dreaded covid is causing trouble again :(
Hi I’ve grown basil from shop bought.Taken cuttings and put them between my tomatoes along with marigolds outside. We were the only plot that didn’t get completely hit with the blight and I have just harvested the last of tomatoes today to ripen at home. Our allotment is in Wembley.
I did exactly the same and our basil is still looking good, I’m in West Sussex.
I did the same for the first time this year (in North London). It’s still going strong (for now…).
I've grown great basil from supermarket stuff over the years... maybe thats the answer for next year! My seed stuff wasn't that strong
I'm in Maidstone, Kent and always grow my basil outside and they always do equally as well as Kew's.
Hahah, 'equally well as kews'... what a claim :D
😊

amazing stealth eggplant!!! : D
So stealth!! I love a surprise like that :D

Hahahah! Also i love the 'wet gale' description :D

I grow basal outside in North Carolina USA March through October great .Till frost.
fab, anna. I'm defintely going to join the outdoor-basil-club next year!
I grow basil outside here in the NW suburbs of Chicago. My favorite variety is lemondrop.
Have grown basil from seed outside here in rainy Lancashire, not this year though, it has rained non-stop since early July. Previous years' harvests were good enough to have made pesto, should be a doddle in sunny Richmond !

However as soon as the first frost comes it's dead immediately!
fantastic. Looking forward to bushy basil next year :D
i’m in kent and I grow everything outdoors including red basil and normal basil successfully
fantastic. Definitely going to give it a go next year.
We grow herbs outside in Central Ohio.we just wait it gets warm to plant them. I am in 6b
great, thanks. going to try it next year definitely!

definitely going to get it outdoors next year! Also you're trying rice?
just realised, i think that was 'twice' as much. I read it as Rice as mulch...hahah!
Thank you for introducing me to lemon drop peppers. Having good harvests and looking forward to chilli jam making.
Aren't they a lovely pepper lynn? :D

Woo for the rallying aubergines! I make something similar to that but without the sausage meat. So good!
Look at the knees on that Cypress! Thank you for the Kew outing! 💚
gorgeous aren't they? I love that little patch. they almost look like stalagmites!
I grow basil outside every year and I live in North Wales. You'll be safe down there in the south Jessie 😊

Ah the bloomin fungus gnats! I've had real problems with them every time i've tried to grow basil in the kitchen!
That box of chilli peppers looks gorgeous 👍
all the colours :D i love a harvest like that :D
Here in Indiana my basil grows like a weed
Perfect!
Hi Jessie my recommendations for dahlias is sweet surprise & lucky number which I got from Wilko a couple of years back this year bought some from Sarah raven and I would recommend molly raven it’s not stopped flowering
lovely, thank you! 3 to add to the list!
I’ve had small bunches off plants I’m in the north of england
nice, do you fine the plants quite strong? and did you grow from seed?
@@JessieatPlot37 yes started from seed indoors then planted in to small metal troughs of the ground. Not massive but get some basil from them
There is a new kid on the block, poor lilly, "run for your life"..............
I subscribed to your channel a long time ago and can’t figure out why I wasn’t watching your videos. They are wonderful. Thank you💥
hahahaha, thanks sylvia!
They sound beautiful, i'll look them up Marion. And yeah, he's a bit fancy isn't he?
I cleared my plot (in Barnet) at the weekend (the remainder of the climbing beans, toms, courgette, uchiki kuri, masses of calendula, and some fennel that had long gone to seed), then yesterday I sowed cover crops (winter rye, vetch and field beans) on half of the beds. I’m chuffed to be so organised this year, and the compost heap is now looking extremely happy too :)
feels great when you're properly on top of the jobs doesn't it?! :D
Brilliant, so many people saying they have the best success from split shop basil... i'm definitely going to give it a go next year.
It's freezing here in Scotland too. Don't think Basil would have a hope growing outside here. But I've never tried to be honest 😂
had a couple of people say i'll definitely be able to because they do in scotland so maybe you should give it a go too next year? :D
@@JessieatPlot37 Interesting! I'll definitely give it a go 👍
I purchased some Thai basil from the box store and planted it.I grew so big WOW! It was beautiful and the bees loved it.We got high winds and it got beat until it was almost out of the ground .🎉
Thai basil is such a beauty, isn't it?!
Outside
Sounds like it will cope with quite a lot Mandy. definitely going to try it outside next year. might do some in, some out and see!
Yes, I grow Basil outside,on a covered Patio. Colchester, Essex.
Nice, thank you.
4:45 some of my basil grows close to that big out in the ground here in Destin, Florida.
fantastic, i'm definitely going o give it a go!
Fantastisch Good work Jessie in oktober laat thans the video love ❤🍂🔥🎃👋🌹💐🥦
thank you!
After thought ,yes I did manage red &green outdoor basil a first for me. Greek only in the conservatory.🤓
oh fab, interesting about the greek!
I'm in southampton and grow most of my basil (green, red and thai,) outside - always works, even this year with the cold wet summer. I grow some in the sunniest and the more shady areas just to hedge my bets, and always grow some with my outdoor tomatoes. 😊
Nice to know it can cope with a grim summer!
For Dahlias I've gotten mine from Breck's Bulbs and Oh. Wow. Beauties. My faves are Tartan, Labyrinth and Spoiled Rotten 😁
Ooooh, 3 to have a look at! Thank you :D
@@JessieatPlot37 anytime m'dear. Who doesn't want to share beauty eh?
I'm from Bath, Pennsylvania USA, and my favorite cut flower dahlias are called Lindsay Michelle from Brecks, they are pink and yellow catus type peddles. I've been cutting them all season. If there's any way I could mail some tubers to you, just let me know how and where.
Lindsay Michelle! i will add her to my list! I'm not sure sending tubers will get through customs but thank you so much for the offer!
I used the same butternut squash seeds in two separate places in my garden. One got one squat squash and the other two huge beautifully shaped squash. Weird.
So strange isn't it!
Already been down to -1C up here in Barnsley a couple of days ago. Had to rush out at 4 am to bring the cayenne peppers indoors
wow, already! Hope the pepper rescue was a success
I've grown it in the north, but as others have said, I bought it from the supermarket in the fresh herb isle and split it. 👍
that seems to be the way to go!
Hi Jessie, Next year, on your recommendation. i will be growing Japanese black truffle! My best (cooking) tom this year for flavour was Feo de Rio Gordo (RS) Magnificent! Biggest was 675g.
I will grow them forever!
Regards
Vic
Hi Jesse I define agree with you on the green beans!! I now just plant pole beans that are climbers 🧗🏻♀️😂😂 I found a new stringless variety that are quite long & delicious!! I’ll write the name of them tomorrow!! Much love ❤️ from Kentucky 🐎🇺🇸
yes! the climbing bean appreciation club!
Wonderful harvest! Love your pumpkins, everything! Your garden is beautiful. I love watching your posts.
For Dahlias try Labyrinth, kelvin floodlight, Black Jack, Bridezilla, the famous Cafe au Lait, cornel bronze, and there’s one called Cheers that seems perfect for you.
Thank you! oooh 3rd recommendation for Labyrinth!! Also cheers! Yes!
How lovely to have a tomato/pepper heavy summer. i hope we have a little more heat next year here!
Oh nice that you can propagate the basil so easily!
Jinxy
hahahahah, i love that. can't eat chocolate to get a chocolate named dahlia :D
I have 3 basil plants over 3 ft tall in my garden right now.
gorgeous!
A visit to Kew is on my bucket list , but if it doesn’t happen at least you’ve taken me. THANKS. Great vlog, what a weird season I still have sweet peas on the go. 😊👍💐
You still have sweetpeas?! Mine collapsed after about a week of flowering this year!
Hi Jess, thank you for another lovely video. I’m in the far SE corner of the UK and no problem growing Basil outside. We’ve a different soil to you but similar climate. It’s still going strong. I simply intersperse it with the outdoor toms. Worth a go.
Brilliant. I will definitely be giving it a go outside next year! as you say - worth a go!
They are the best tomato companion, because tomatoes will provide some shade and the basil will keep some of the tomato plagues at bay.
warm sunny spot, definitely going to be grwoing it outside next year!
Hi Jessie 😁. I grew a dahlia last year called 'Juliette' very pretty....I saved the tubers gave a couple away and growing again this year (just started sprouting)
Oh, and my niece is called Juliette! will look it up, thank you!
Volume is okay, your garden is still looking good great harvest and the flowers are so beautiful in your garden I pick about 4 squash from my garden I was so happy and so many hot peppers but can’t get those sweet peppers to grow this year have to work on the bed
Its been a funny year for sweet pepers here too. the chillies are coming good now but the big chaps just never got going! Hopefully next year!
Love your vlog and watching all the things you grow wish we had the variety of plants and seeds here in the US! I also wish we had allotments here such a fantastic way to get people in cities to garden. I can no longer have chickens so give your girly whirlies a snuggle for me from Oregon USA!
thank you :D I will defintely give Roob a snuggle from you, not sure i'll catch the others! :D
I'm so looking forward to Lily getting big again.
Hahhaha, yeah, get her pantaloon look going! :D
@@JessieatPlot37 très stylish
Hi Jessie, this year I grew basil from seed at the allotment, straight into soil. Not massive plants but good germination and very strong. Not as tender as the ones under cover. Caught by frost immediately at the weekend. Great for pesto.
My friend gave me a bouquet of dahlias recently with firework flowers they are sublime! ❤
Happy autumn.
Ps had 43 butter nut squash all decent but none huge. 😊 Vickie x
i always have problems with the basil germination indoors. seems to rot off. Maybe better outdoors. Wow, 43 butternuts!!! Happy autumn Vickie
dont be sorry I LOVE YOUR REALLY LONG VIDEOS HAHA ,
Hahahahah
Try taking some cuttings of the Bulgarian.
Ah i'm envious of your freezer beans! Cobra is a winner isn't it?
I'm hoping its not so harsh this year too, -14 is crazy! winter draws on, indeed!
I heard you can use trombonecino like a pumpkin if it ripens properly.
You defintely can! we did last year and they store really well! the only problem is that they don't really taste of anything.
Hey Jessie - I grow basil outside, both the Italian and Greek. I am just up the river from you, in Buckinghamshire. Some years are better than others, but it's definitely worth a try!
Thanks Janet! Hopefully we'll have a lovely sunny summer next year and the basil will grow like a weed! :D
I too enjoy surprise gifts in the gardens 😊 also, you have inspired me to grow more of a variety of peppers next season 😊 I always grow basic 3 or 4 types
What are your 3 or 4 standards?
A bell, a jalapeño, a banana are always what I grow and save seeds every year. But have tried a couple different varieties in the past. I'm going to try a few more types next season along with my usuals 😊
I'm in Essex and yes I have grown basil outside. I grow it in my garden and at the allotment. The allotment one's got really big and busy. Its definitely worth giving it a try and see how you get on. 😊
Fantastic, i'm definitely going to give it a go next year!
brilliant, i'm definitely going to go to them David. So many recommendations!
Your chard looks beautiful and yummy 😋 and your girly whirlies are so cute! If I was your age again I think I still wouldn't get as much done as you do ❤ cheers! ❤😊
Hahhaah, thanks you. I wish i could get more done really, my bones are creaking away Tamara!
Hello...🐞 basil loves the sun however, it's weird as the best I grew was in part shade under some herb plants, loves company.Think different varieties could be worth looking at.
I live in North Yorkshire. First frosts couple of nights ago, feels so early, like yourselves had to get prepared. Love your videos they are a true joy.💖Thank You.
always the way isn't it! Yeah, i'm going to look at a few varieties and hopefully dot them about in different spots. Hopefully it likes somewhere!
There are so many different types! Some of them a really scrawny and some produce really quite chuncky flower spikes with super tender stems!
If your looking for dahlias hall of heddon is the only place I’d ever recommend as it’s a specialist nursery, you can go for pot tubers, mini plants or garden ready
So much love for Hall of Heddon! i'll definitely be going to them!
Hello Jessie! Yes, I have successfully grown basil outside fending slugs and snails galore! I am in NW London... I was not very optimistic but I was pleasently surprised. I would love to hear your selection for cut flowers next week and whats your plan for those... Have a lovely week! M
Oh thats great news! I'm definitely going to try it next year. And yes! I'll be going through everything i'm planting for flowers next year :D
