It might be the insulation foam, that is disintegrating and turning into acidic fumes, that has loosened the gold plating. I once found box of gold plated vintage IC:s packed in disintegrated foam, that had similar damage to the plating, gold just flaking off from the underlying metal. Or maybe the potted battery has started to leak and outgas, epoxy must have tiny voids at least through the wires and connector where corrosive gasses could slowly escape.
Interesting piece of history. Although it is true that the electronics look a bit like something that was put together in a shed, especially when compared to other space grade hardware from the same time period, like for example the Apollo Guidance Computer.
Thank you, always interesting videos!
Just a thought: Gold content/quality could be guessed/measured with the thickness/samples of those flakes. Interesting video, thank you.
Yea! Wow - good find! I've always wanted to see play with one of the tape recorders in that era of equipment. Haven't yet, I'll bet there's much to see. Do you have one?!?!?
Cool find. Most likely used as an engineering mockup for the actual satellite.
Great video. Many thanks!
The odd screw threads may be a British association thread
Yeah, such screws are not made anymore it seems, in particular not from affordable sources as chinese manufacturers. I have the same issues for Smiths and Elliott aircraft instruments.
@@msylvain59 they are still in use in model steam building but not very cheap indeed
Nice, just a satelite part, from gold era of space exploration 😊.
Tubes where beter option then, transistors and ICs where much more sensitive to radiation back then.
Perhps it was meant to go thru Van Alen belts, it whoud fry everything.
Since its a ionised oxigen detector its likley.
Wow! What a find!
Where did you get it?

@@msylvain59 wow, that’s cool, too bad I don’t live in the uk
@@msylvain59 Interesting web site. I just wish my house was bigger!
finds one of a kind historic satellite part - rips it to bits like an idiot
It was already half taken apart when it arrived, it is all back together as goood as possible now.
A real colector puts it back together, dont make a wrong conclusion on the go.
We shoud be gratefull for effort put thru the years.
