  • Derry in Northern Ireland, Londonderry in Northern Ireland - the defensive walls of Derry, the defensive walls of Londonderry in Northern Irealnd. Let's go for a walk and a tour around Derry's (or, Londonderry's) ancient and well maintained defensive city walls in Northern Ireland. Spectacular views all around!!
Derry's defensive walls were originally built by the Irish Society between 1613 and 1619. Derry's defensive walls were built with the intention of protecting the Scottish and English planters that had moved to Ulster as part of the Plantation of Ulster that had been established by James I. It was a direct consequence of the previous settlement being destroyed by Irish chieftain Cahir O'Doherty during O'Doherty's rebellion. As a result of the building of Derry's defensive walls by the Irish Society, which was a consortium of livery companies based out of the City of London, the city was officially renamed Londonderry in the 1613 royal charter. This is what has subsequently led to the naming dispute for the city and county of Derry/Londonderry.
The walls are at the centre of the historic city of Derry and within them are a number of Derry's most important landmarks including the Apprentice Boy's Hall and St. Columb's Cathedral (the first ever purpose build Protestant Cathedral).

there were 4 gates (Bishop's Gate, Butcher Gate, Ferryquay Gate, and Shipquay Gate) in the 1600s (17th century), but in the 1800s (19th century) 3 new gates were built (New Gate, Castle Gate and Magazine Gate). Also following the seige of derry in 1689 and the battle of the boyne in 1690.

1619? Now that's what you'd call history, isn't it? If I may add, Vic, which is off topic, I was overwhelmed that the remains of Richard III were found underneath a garage, of all places, as opposed to Westminster Abbey. For the same concerns over antiquities and their disturbance, Vic, I shuddered at the bombing of Iraq for fear of disturbing or losing completely previous antiquities. In fact, if I were able to, I would rename Iraq Antinquity. Only God Himself knows how many periods of civilization are layered underneath Iraq, the home of monotheism!

Jay Young I have always been fascinated by history (it is obvious, I think) and I had always wanted to visit Iraq and Iran, for the reason that you mentioned, to see some of those ancient sites that would make Ancient Athens look like a city that met its glory only a few years ago. As a matter of fact, in 2016, I am planning on visiting Iran and I cannot wait for that (assuming everything else goes well).. Alas. Iraq will have to wait (I do not see things getting better in the next 5-10 years)..

Vic Stefanu If you final sentence holds true, Vic, and I think it will, please let them not disturb the antiquities. Can you imagine the setback to humankind if, say, the Rosetta Stone, or some such relic with much, much earlier beginnings, had been destroyed?

You need to be very wary visiting that place if you are from the south of Ireland most unfriendly , horrible people around that area especially if they hear your accent.

Vic Stefanu - World Travels and Adventures My aged mother visited the area once and was called every name under the sun...even young shop keeper's were very rude ...I think the bad press they get is justified.
