I watched Sailor Moon on tv but Kimba was at my local video store and I use to rent and I loved the show and had no idea it came out in the 60s. The White Lion was so cute so is the girl lion. Its a different take from Lion King. They totally copied both the names by making them sound alike and the scenes. I just finally watched the original Astro Boy although its not complete in dubbed and just started Speed Racer. I'm watching the Origins of Both Anime and Cartoon series and movies. Back in the 60's I guess it was, Speed Racer, Gigantor and 8th Man all came on around the same time on TV. If there was any conflict, I always chose 8th man. It had mature themes and just the fact that the guy had been killed and put in a robot was beyond anything they were showing in other cartoons. My friends seemed to prefer the other two shows, and I could never figure out why. The original from Japan was called 8 Man, without the 'th', and as far as I'm concerned this style was the predecessor to modern day Anime.

    Take note, the opening animation sequence and music were done here in the US by Trans-Lux animation and music by Winston Sharples. Think "The Mighty Hercules", "Felix the Cat", etc.
    In LA we got "*8 Man" in '66, along with other anime. The animation and dubbing were crude, but the writing and direction were unique and sophisticated. I used to compare the "new" anime to banal crap like "Johnny Quest" UGH!
    Having grown up in LA, I'd hang out with Japanese and would later meet many of the anime/manga movers and shakers. I purchased my first manga examples as a teen in 1970 and still have them!
    I'll end it here...

      Robert, "Johnny Quest" ruled! As did the '60's era "Astroboy," and other dramatic 'toons of the era. We also grew up watching cartoons from Russia and Europe (I had a short chat with one of the original syndicators about 10 years ago) on local So Cal TV. These shows got on the air because they were usually inexpensive and I think some of the TV station people enjoyed them as well.

    I don’t recall ever seeing this as a kid. The only two cartoons I remember from Japan with similar early Anime styles at this time was Kimba first, then Speed Racer came along. And 8th man reminds me of Racer X (Speed’s secret brother) from Speed Racer. My guess is this was televised on the East Coast which did air unique cartoons compared to the West Coast. I grew up in LA.

    Interesting Remastering. The original vocals are original but the sound effects are actually what has been remastered. Better remember to turn sound volume way down after watching or the speakers will explode!

    • @8thManDVDcom
      @8thManDVDcom  9 років тому +1

      Tim Harper I think we enhanced the sound effects on the first 5 episodes, was for 5.1 on DVD. Yea you can "feel" the power lol We got to many bad reviews and complaints so stopped doing that with future episodes but the first few still remain as I never updated them. Personally it grew on me I like it but that's me.

      Tim Harper Yea this was a 16mm transfer, no idea of the source but think Dave from 8thman.com did it. I have 8 new episodes that someone transferred exclusively for us that I have been meaning to get done. Those are top quality 16mm direct-digital transfers, unedited w/ bumpers intact. The only better quality you can get is 35mm but those are hard to get a hold of. Been so busy with other aspects but hopefully I will get to them soon.

    There is a live action 8th Man. Before VHS tapes became no more I rented a tape from Blockbuster Video and was amazed. The story was basic but the Professor's son was still alive and Tobor had to smoke a special cigarette to cool down his insides. I am going to do some sleuthing to see if I can find the movie. I maybe 66 but still sci fi, live action and aminmated!

    Many years ago, when I was a little kid, I vaguely remember seeing the beginning of the Origin of 8th Man from Professor Genius' point of view!!! I do not remember seeing the entire episode. But it started with Professor Genius talking briefly about his inventions before 8th Man. I believe it was the first episode of the series. Please forgive me the numbers may not be accurate. 1. A small bird 2. A hamster 3. A small dog 4. horse 5. Pounce the Tiger 6. A Car 7. Samantha. (As we know Samantha and Pounce fell into the wrong hands.) Samantha dies in a horrible and very sad battle with 8th man. Sad because after all it was his older sister!!! So 8th Man's life contained great sorrow. I vaguely remember an episode of the car falling into the wrong hands too! These are my vague recollections from when I ten year old so they may not be accurate. Please forgive me.
