As an 80's kid I can't even count how many times I've watched this movie.
No on demand..
This was back when you had to catch it at the right time on TV
@@soularbeing6942 I had it on VHS and my older brothers and I watched it all the time.
You know what Jack Burton always says...
💯
What the hell?
Kurt Russel's character always struck me as a protagonist for an entirely different film who wound up in the wrong movie. He has no idea what's going on 90% of the time and ends up getting slapped around more than he doe the slapping, it's wonderful.
Jack Burton is Robin to Wang Chi's Batman. He's the sidekick who doesn't realize he's the sidekick in the duo.
His character doesn't fight once, lol
@@David_Lo_Pan The knife in your head argues otherwise, David.
@@MrHarbltron
That wasn't fighting.....
That was all in the reflexes, lol
You can tell everyone was having a blast shooting this. And I love the John Wayne impression Kurt Russell was doing the whole movie. This is a favorite of mine, as I watch this once every six months.
exactly! singing nothing but damn good fun shooting this
@@JamesVSCinema you should watch the directors commentary with Carpenter and Russel. Just cracking up the whole time
You know. Funny you should mention Kurt doing a John Wayne impression. :) John very early on in his career actually met Wyatt Earp when Earp was living in hollywood and would visit film sets as a consultant. John would proceed to create his entire persona and acting style based off of what he observed of Wyatt during the time he was able to see him. So Kurt is doing an impression of John, who was doing an interpretation of what he saw Wyatt do, and Kurt would later go on to play Wyatt in Tombstone. Boom. Mind fucking blown. Lol
@@MrRimant There is a fictional movie about his time in Holltwood where he teams up real western actor Tom Mix to solve a murder. It is called Sunset (1988) and stars James Garner as Earp and Bruce Willis as Tom Mix.
This is my favorite film of all time, it’s just such a fun time front to back!
Also love that the main character is actually just his friends sidekick the whole time, it’s a fun flip on the genre!
Hilarious hahaha
Yeah! And how it makes fun of the white savior trope by him just bumbling around confused, but supremely confident
@@maladjustedmoon5200 Jack Burton has that good ole American confidence and Kurt Russell plays it perfectly
It may not be my favorite film-OAT but it is my favorite Carpenter film-OAT, with They Live coming in second.
@@maladjustedmoon5200 Anyone can be a savior.
You nailed it: what makes this movie work is that everyone understands the assignment. everyone knew the mood and aesthetic the film was going to have. Jack Burton is a great character - Kurt Russell kills it. I've loved this film since it was released. It still holds up.
U had me crying laughing James .that don’t y’all have jobs line ended me lol 😂 great reaction man .this move is truly a gem 💎 I’ve seen it countless times and it never gets old. it’s just 80s perfection .
I remember watching the commercial for this as a kid and thinking the eyeball monster was a beholder. This was the same time Dungeons and Dragons first edition was really big, and this movie sort of feels like it. A dungeon crawl. Somebody took their own campaign, combined it with a sort of Indiana Jones hapless adventurer type protagonist, and voila.
I used to love watching this film with my dad, like you pointed out, it doesn't take itself too seriously, some nice action moments and lots of laughs.
Jack Burton, America's first podcaster. May this movie never get remade 🤞🤞
Hahahaha this is so true wtf
I never wanted to be on set SO BADLY xD

Lo Pan is James Hong, who only has over 450 acting credits on the IMDB. Recently including Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Kurt Russell is playing the sidekick who is convinced he is the hero. And being the star, we think he is as well. This movie is totally WTF, but a whole lot of fun.
Doesn't matter no one will vote for my movie request because nobody knows it exists it's the greatest unknown movie TWIN TOWN it's Welsh cost 1.7 million to make in 1997 89% audience score on rotten tomatoe it's a cult classic in the UK
@@nothernmonkey8612 Rhys Ifans I see. Cool.
A genuine classic right there. I love that Jack has no idea what's going on for the first half of the movie.
One of my favorite flicks of all time. IMO they missed a great opportunity for a TV series featuring Jack driving his truck from place to place getting into adventures along the way.
Cheers man.
Honestly I think Kurt Russell could still pull it off.
Script was co-written by the director of "Buckaroo Banzai". Have you seen it? Now there's a great double feature!
What's that watermelon doing there?
This is one of my very favorite movies; I've seen it more than a hundred times. It is a relentlessly ENTERTAINING movie. And as many have noted, one of the key things is that the main character is so obviously the sidekick and not the protagonist. I've been having fun watching this movie for almost 40 years now; it's always great to see someone watch it for the first time.
DUDE! I am so happy that you watched and LOVED this movie! It's been my go-to when I just want to watch something fun and silly for decades. I've literally lost track of how many times I've laughed my ass off and recited nearly every line while drinking a bottle of wine and/or smokin' a bowl. The action is fantastic, the dialogue is terrific, and the story itself, full of ancient Chinese mythology and magic, is amazing - especially for us old D&D campaigners. The cast is perfect, especially Kurt Russell as Jack "It's all in the Reflexes" Burton and the great James Hong as Lo-Pan - "Shut up, Mister Burton! You were not put upon this Earth to 'get it!'" You most likely recognize Mr Hong from Everything Everywhere All At Once as Evelyn's father, or maybe Blade Runner as Chu, the eye guy "You Nexus. I make your eyes!". Between TV and film, he has over 600 screen credits. The scenery chewing, the dialogue..."Okay, you folks sit tight, hold the fort, and keep the home fires burning. If we're not back by dawn (wink), call the President."...everything about this film is perfect. And don't even get me started on how it completely turns the Hero/Sidekick trope inside-out. I predict that you'll be watching it again in a few months, and 2 or 3 times a year from then on. You'll start quoting along by your third or fourth viewing. I promise. Share it with your friends. They'll thank you.
The alley fight scene is my favourite scene. From start to finish, that scene is so damn cool and insane.
My favorite little detail is that they are going in pretending to be phone repairmen and Jack is carrying just a normal phone receiver lol.
Just the biggest smile on my face watching your reactions. This flick was undoubtedly the one I rented the most from the town library when I was a kid. I've seen it at least 100 times. It's just a really fun movie and Russell as the reluctant, slightly incompetent hero of the film works SO well. Glad you liked it!
I always wondered what it would be like if this movie had a prequel, featuring Eggshen as the main character.
I watched this on VHS in '87 with a friend, having no idea what type of film it was. By the time it was over, we looked at each other with our jaws wide open.
Jack is a sidekick that thinks he's the main character. And Raiden is 100% inspired by this.
I'm an actor that worked in L.A. for years. I had gotten cast in an episode of a short-lived sit com called Regular Joe that starred Daniel Stern and Judd Hirsch. When I checked in in the morning I realized I was standing next to James Hong who plays the villain in this film. He has been in tons of films before and after this film. As we walked to our dressing rooms Mr. Hong turned to me and said "We have worked together before". I told him no we hadn't, I would certainly remember that. He stopped for a second and then said "You interviewed me then." He didn't wait for my answer, he just turned and walked into his dressing room. I have a familiar looking face and always had people thinking they knew me.
Loving your reactions takes me back to being a kid listening to my brother cracking up to every other line. great show keep it up.
“Henry Swanson’s my name and excitement’s my game” I remember first time I saw this movie and flinching when he said that because it’s basically my name xD
Funny how you say the three storms are like Raiden, they were actually the inspiration for the character!
Another fun fact, as you said it gave you TMNT vibes:The cg animated series of TMNT had an episode based on it, with James Hong returning as pretty much Lo Pan(and giving superpowers to three common crooks that mimic the three storms powers).
Love how Thunder/ Carter Wong inflates to the point he explodes into coleslaw.
Great reaction! When I was a kid I spent the weekend at my Grandparents. I watched this movie with my Uncle (who was only 5 yrs older than me) & my Grandpa. Well Grandpa kept falling asleep 1/2 way through the movie but wanted to finish it when he woke up. Me & my uncle insisted we start the movie at the beginning & Grandpa was like OK fine. Me & my uncle would just look at each other like YES! WE GET TO WATCH IT OVER AGAIN! We got to watch it 3 times that weekend. This movie was made for a couple of teen boys with action & comedy blended perfectly together. Glad you had fun watching the movie. We sure did!
"Big Trouble in Little China", "The Man with One Red Shoe", "Showdown in Little Tokyo", "Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man". Those 80s and 90s movie titles were really quirky and catchy back then. You never knew what you were gonna get plot or storywise, but dang they're really fun.
Seeing this movie as a kid is a big part of why I love Asian fantasy, but also underrated is the Tec-9 that Jack uses for a chunk of the movie. Something about it as a kid just made it one of my favorite guns to see in media. Any time a game has a Tec-9, you better BELIEVE I'm using it.
John Carpenter does the music for most, if not all, his films (Halloween theme is his masterpiece). Check out the music video for this movie in all its 80’s glory. Looks like a bunch of dads. It’s tremendous.
Also, I’m sure someone else will mention that Jack isn’t the main character. We’re meant to think he is, but it’s Wang who saves the day and gets the girl. Best duo ever.
My partner and I always quote “Shut up, Mr. Burton! You are not brought upon this world get it!” plus the “Just remember what Ol’ Jack Burton says..” and then we usually make something up. Great film.
Late to the showdown, but this is one of my all-time favourite movies from the 80s.. that "feeling kinda invinsible" scene in the elevator.. 😂 and all the other gems.
I've never been so excited for you. I figured this was a fun rewatch of a classic but FIRST TIME!? hooo boy you about to light up!!
I love how they thought barging into the Wing Kong Exchange waving around a rotary phone all came down to "timing"
one of my favorites from childhood. watched it countless times. great job dude.
6:15 "Those pigeons almost got absolutely clapped" HAAA!
I love this hilarious 80’s classic! Plus, I’m from Charlotte, NC and you roasting the murky ass water in Myrtle beach was fucking great!!! Thank you.
gonna show my age here but I saw this in the theater when it came out and it is still just as glorious now as it was back then....good memories
"That's my mom if I closed my door, let alone lock it"
Damn, I feel you, that shit gave me a whole complex about feeling watched, lol
😭😭😭 ptsd my man
One of my all-time favorite films. When Kurt Russel was cast as Starlord's dad in Guardians 2 I immediately thought of Jack Burton.
Location, Set Design, Conan The Barbarian. Best Musical Score in a film also.
This movie, my favorite :
"It will come out no more"
"What? What will come out no more?!"
Didn't see this in the theaters, but saw it on VHS before 1990. "Honey, I never drive faster than I can see; besides it's all in the reflexes." One line, 3 minutes into the movie. Bang. I was sold, mark me down for the whole ride. One of my favorite John Carpenter films. This, Escape from New York and Starman...tough for me to pick the winner between the three. Three very different movies but love 'em all.
A true classic. I watched this a million times back in the day. Kurt is Perfect for Jack.
You can tell where Mortal Combat got it’s inspiration from.
It's all in the reflexes. Freaking classic movie
Only halfway through, great vid, lmao! I didn't realize how influential it was when I first watched it a few years back. Must see.
One of the funniest things about the sequel comic book series is when you find out that Lo Pan was sent to "the Hell of those Killed by Idiots" 😆
One of my favorite movies.
A movie with fantasy, wit, and action.
And those one liners!
😂
This is one of your best reaction bro, I was dying multiple times during this hahaha
20:43
LOL bruh i can't lmao. That thing went thru that guys skull like it had been shot out of a crossbow looool.
Big Trouble is an all-time great classic. I have to watch it, at least, once a year.
One of my favorite 80's movies. The most fun movie ever.
this movie starts and it DOESN'T STOP
This is my favorite movie. It is just pure fun. It was fun to see almost every Asian character actor is this movie. Lo Pan was James Hong who played the eyeball guy in Bladerunner. Victor Wong was in The Golden Child. Suzee Pai appeared in Penthouse magazine and was both a model and an actress. Even the guy in the alley fight with the cleaver, Al Leong, played the Asian terrorist in Die Hard.
YESSSSSS I've been waiting so long for you to react to this Gem of a film!!!!!
Jack Burton's the sidekick. Need to see more of that kind of dynamic in movies!
FUN FACT:
John Tobias, one of the co-creators of MORTAL KOMBAT, did in fact take inspiration from Lightning for Raiden's character concept.
Being 65 years old, I have grown up watching Kurt Russell in the movies all my life, this is my second favorite film of Kurt’s, “3000 Miles to Graceland”, is my favorite….
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) is an excellent example of location. Hollywood 1969, looks amazing
Fun fact, the creators of the first Mortal Kombat game were inspired by the lighting dude to start creating their game in college. So we have John Carpenter for fatalities lol
Yeah, you go into thinking this movie is a fever dream after a bit, then Sasquatch pops out and you throw your hands up and just accept the ride lol
Exactly hahahaha
This and they live are my favorite carpenter movies. Can’t wait to see this reaction.
This is much better than "EEAAO". James Hong was great in this.
This makes me SOOOO happy. I LOVE this movie so much!!!!
This reaction will appease my Emperor indeed!
So odd this popped up in my feed. My father and I made plans to watch this tonight after dinner. Great movie!
One of my all time favorite movies. Also between this The Thing, and Bone Tomahawk, Kurt Russell is my guy.
One of my favorite movies of all time!!
Lol😂😅. "BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA " Is totally off the chain. I haven't seen it in 40 years, but damg. FUN AF WHEN I WAS 9-10.
There is a really good interview, if you search for 'Carter Wong Interview - "Thunder" from Big Trouble in Little China' Some Chinese folks who reacted to this film interviewed one of the Chinese actors and it was so cool to see how John Carpenter treated the Chinese martial artists in this film so much better then any of the other directors of the time, he actually wanted to make a film staring a Chinese actor but couldn't get funding, so he made Kurt Russell l be an incompetent lead who gives most of the comic relief while the Chinese sidekick did all the heavy lifting. The whole film holds up pretty well and I am pretty happy I can proudly be a John Carpenter fan, he seems like a good person who treated his whole crew well.
Sheesh, took you long enough to get to this masterpiece!
James: "Don't y'all have jobs, man?!"
Wing Kong: "The dental plan is better, here."
"wtf was that" is the main theme of this movie.
Yes! Still my favorite movie of all time!
A classic! Haven't seen this in a while.
When you say "I've seen him before" about an actor who has 600+ acting credits 😂
Yeah, James Hong is King That Guy!
Plus voice acting in hundreds of cartoons.
"I wouldn't want to live here"
SF was not like this in the 80's. It was like that in the *18* 80's when the original script was set. It was going to be a Western, Jack was cowboy looking for his horse, not his truck. The "Tong Wars" were a bloody conflict between criminal factions in Chinatown around that time. The Showtime series "Warrior" is about those events.
They decided to set in the modern day to make the descent into the fantasy realm a bigger removal from a more familiar "reality"
"Don't you have jobs?"
The tongs were nominally organizations set up to help immigrants assimilate. The idea was that successful Chinese American businesses would support orginazations that set up FOB immigrants with jobs, places to live, English language classes, and Chinese language resources. But of course, they were often perfect covers for criminal operations. These guys in this scene would be "upstanding" members of the community who do in fact have jobs, at least on paper, and the "good guys" would be a legit community org, but the "bad guys" are actually gangsters.
John Carpenter makes all his own music, you have him to thank for that Halloween track ... the soundtrack to his 'Ghost from Mars' movie is epic ;)
I loved this oviedo in my teens. Watched it A LOT
Unfortunately my favorite line didn't make the edit. Jack: "how did you get up there?" Egg Shen: "It wasn't easy!"
Just skip the establishing shot or the exposition. 🤣🤣🤣
I always lol at the floppy feet of that hairy monster 😂
"Ol' Jack Burton always says, What The Hell".
It's all in the relexes! This movie is so quotable.
This is also the inspiration for Raiden and fujin from MK and blanka from street fighter
This film is someone's D&D session
Such a silly fun movie, basically an 80's action flick but filmed with a focus on the comedy sidekick as if they were the protagonist :)
this movie came on tbs and tnt all the time when i was growing up. i still watch this movie like once a year. now that you mention the whole teenage mutant turtle vibes, i do see it lol.
Myrtle Beach catching strays.
I love Myrtle Beach but yooo..that beach is murkyyy
@@JamesVSCinema I'm from Virginia Beach, so dunking on Myrtle is a time honored tradition.
Messes me up, I just now realized that is "deep throat" from X-Files season one at the beginning of the film.
I saw this as a young marine in 87.
We took shots every time someone said China, LoPan, girl with green eyes, magic etc.
Got polluted pretty fast.
this movie is too funny. glad you did this one
One of my personal favorites!
The best part is that Kurt russel literally never does one thing right in the entire film until the end. All he does is complain and it’s hilarious
Now, 5 years before this, John Carpenter made one of my absolute favorite films, also starring Kurt Russell, except this one was more serious. That movie was Escape From New York. I highly recommend you watch it, the longer cut would be better, but doesn't change the outcome of the film, so whichever one you get to see is fine (directors cut - wink wink nudge nudge 😂). I'm sure you'll enjoy it
This movie’s great! One of those have to watch when it’s on TV films!
Great movie. Another good Kurt Russel movie that doesn't get enough love is Soldier. Not sure which filmography poll it should in, but it's definitely worth a watch.
This film got me into monster makeup and martial arts films.
Dude! when you talk about cult classic.. this is the epitome of it. It was just so different, even when it released. it stands the test of time. So good...
I LOVE this movie!!!
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!
Some of my favorite lines, even if I don't write them exactly verbatim:
"It worked at home..."
"I'm gonna tell you about something, and I don't wanna hear anything about 'Act of God.'"
"Two thousand years and you can't bag one chick with green eyes? Come on, Dave, you gotta be doing something seriously wrong."
"Which David Lo Pan? Little ol' basket-case on wheels or ten-foot roadblock?"
"It's the Underwater Hell Of The Upside-Down Sinners."
"Just how many hells have you all got?"
"China's got a lot of hells."
"If we're not back by dawn, call the President."
"You will come here no more!"
"What?! WHAT will come here no more?"
(The best euphemism for WTF was that?!?)
"I don't know about you guys, but I'm feeling kinda... invincible."
"I took something, it makes me see what no one else can see. Why are you dressed like that?"
"It's all in the reflexes."
Great reaction video! Best to you-
Kurt Russell's character was like a screwup version of a John Wayne character where it is all about bravado, but when push comes to shove, most of the time he fires into the ceiling and knocks himself out with debris. He even screws up the initially intended throwing of the knife to kill Lo Pan and it is only when his reflexes kick in where he pulls through.
I have heard that Jack Burton was supposed to be a bit like John Wayne actually. If you have seen the Escape from NY/LA movies, Kurt's character in those, Snake Pliskin, is supposed to be more like a Clint Eastwood character. At least that is what I read.
If you haven't watched it already, you may want to check out the Eddie Murphy movie The Golden Child. It's another 80s fantasy movie featuring Egg Shen actor Victor Wong, with Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones) and even a voice cameo from Frank Welker. His voice is in most of the cartoons I watched as a kid. If you don't know the name, you should check out his credits on IMDB, he's up there with Mel Blanc in my book.
