Office Chair: Add More Cushion

  • In this video I show you how I added more cushion/foam to my computer desk swivel chair. it was starting to get very uncomfortable and I decided that I needed to do this- at first I was a bit scared that I might completely ruin my computer chair but I figured that if it got too hard I would stop and put everything back together.
    anyway, turns out it was fairly simple and easy especially since I had somewhat "proper" equipment.
    Definitely recommend doing this if your butt is getting sore and you're sick of using your pillows...
    you can purchase some official high density upholstery foam on Amazon amzn.to/2kIOx6F (affiliate)
    Or (haven't tried with memory foam)
    you could always purchase mattress topper memory foam or just regular foam off amazon

    To remove the staples without tearing the cloth, just use a flat head screwdriver, push the edge of the tip under the middle of the staple, twist the screwdriver until the staple comes out a bit and grab the staple with a pliers and pull it out. Also after you put the new foam in the seat and put the black cover on, before you staple it up put the bolts back in through the holes loosely to hold the cover in its right place, stops the cover moving around and makes sure the holes line up.

    Even expensive office chairs bottom out after 1/2 years ridiculous how these companies still put cheap materials and under engineered products out, so I bought a cheap chair and moded it.

    I did this to my ‘racing/gaming’ chair because it got so bad started brushing my ass. This really helped and made my chair so much more comfortable.
    The only down side is the foam had already worn down in less than a week and I’ve been sitting in my chair less since..

    Encountered your vid while was researching how to reupholster my own dying office. I kinda know what to expect now, thanks. I'd just like to add if anyone's doing the same they should look up foam firmness and foam density to get an idea of what to look for in foam (and to understand the numbers from manufacturer). Rather just using more foam you can dial it down to how hard or soft you want it.

    I'm convinced these computer chairs are a scam. The padding disappears within 6 months and then it's a pain in the ass to add more padding. Most people just end up buying a new chair. And before someone says I'm wearing out my chair with my fat ass, I'm 6' 180lbs. I'm not that fat. This is America where the average office worker is a 220lb female. That's the benchmark, chair manufacturers. Get your shit together.

    I thank you for this video. Not ready to buy a chair and the only one I have right now is one with the same construction as this one. It had no arms so I had to make them out of wood. Not visually impressive but they work fine if you dont mind no movement. That said the seat itself needs more cushion so I plan to do what you have done in this video. Sorry but that yellow foam is also too soft, even with two layers. You need high density foam. That foam will also bottom out when you sit. And, because probably it is old, it will not work as good as brand new one.

    Or, instead of using 4+ inches of soft foam you could use the appropriate 2" of a higher density foam and shit can the old foam. Then the old upholstery would still fit.

    • @TechManZ
      @TechManZ  6 років тому +1

      I just recently purchased some faux leather and will be redoing this. Just gotta find myself some high density foam now.

    • @redwhitentrue
      @redwhitentrue 6 років тому

      Excellent. I'd like very much to see that video and would like to see what materials you use as far as foam. From watching a few videos I've gathered that for cushions of the size we need (1-1/2" to 2-1/4") the density should be at a 26 or better the density the manufacturer uses is about 18. So a density of 26 and firmness of 45 is what I've surmised. Therefore, they say to get a foam rating of 2645. Hope this helps you. When you upload that video I would love it if you reply to this comment so I can view it. If not, I understand. Best of luck and thanks for your videos.

    Use a screwdriver for one thing can be used to bend the staples up so you don't tear up your textiles so bad. I'm sure there are other ways as well. OMG! I came here looking for help?!!!

    • @TechManZ
      @TechManZ  7 років тому +2

      It's easier said than done.
      I've tried all different methods including the screwdriver. Screw driver method is inferior to the method I found on youtube which still did not work. staples were really embedded into the wood.
