I’m an exiled Essex boy living in Devon. I do miss those flat landscapes, big skies willow trees and weatherboarded buildings . Would be good to see the rest of the trail if you could.

Another great video - wonderful to see the unique Essex countryside. I often cycled around the Ongar area with friends when I was at school in Hornchurch. I remember the incongruity of seeing a tube train waiting at the station. Great that you visited the church (also unique!) at Greensted - on one of our cycle trips there I took a photo from which my dad did a drawing - it's beside me on the wall as I write. Back in the mid 60's there were 2 yew trees in the churchyard - the last time I visited, about 10 years ago, there was only one. Thanks again for another lovely walk!

To misquote John Lydon, "Ongar is an energy." I'm going to show a few minutes of this video to my English 120 class tomorrow. It's a course on the Pastoral tradition in English Literature and your comments around 3:30 to 6:00 are very relevant to our discussion of Shakespeare's "As You Like It"!

I grew up in a village outside Ongar, the high st looks nicer through your lens, l guess we dont appreciate whats under our nose.
Chipping Ongar means market on a wooded slope. There is a Mott & Baily Castle behind the car park thats next to the Cock Tavern, it never had any stone work & just the remains of some small Victorian brick structure remains on top of the Mott.

I love watching your walks John, please keep uploading, not just for the walk, or the chats you have with us, that make us feel we are with you, but also because of the encouragement to get out, walk about, to feel close to the earth again, to be cognisant of the rhythms and times of the earth, the motions of the sun, and the seasons. As you rightly say in your videos, it helps our mental state no end.
I organised a walk with two friends in mid Spring three years ago, 2016, only, we started in Ongar and walked to Epping, then caught the old bus and old train back. An excellent walk, lovely countryside, and the history of Greenstead Church was amazing.
I took my family to Greenstead Church couple years back too, to see it, and this summer, had a short walk from Ongar across the fields to help my wife with some movement (leg) issues, and visited St Martins Church, and looked at the motte and bailey castle site.
I feel it is imperitive, my duty, to pass this love of walking throught the countryside to my daughters, and I feel so pleased they love walking, and connecting to more basic primal yet extremenly deep feelings and thoughts of the nature of our existence.
    All the best!

I used to travel the single track from the Central Line from Epping to Ongar years ago John when it still ran.
We always stopped for a pint and food in that pub on the right of the video before walking through Ongar to Greenstead up to thar Wonderful Church before carrying on.
Did you walk around to the back of it as they still have the openings for the Leper’s to look through to watch the service as they wasn’t allowed to go into it.
Every 2 years they have a little Herb Festival in the Garden Of The Church, worth visiting I think. 😊

Great walk fashioned into a great film. If you manage a multi-day wander next year does it have to be on a designated long distance path?. Why not do it as a sort of off the cuff, random journey? I'm sure it would make a mesmerising film & hopefully be memorable for yourself. Whatever, keep 'em coming.

The tree trunk and bark seen at 5:07 is a "Common Hornbeam" - Carpinus betulus. The pollarded trees viewed are "Common Hornbeam"; the practice of pollarding trees at height was done for firewood and fuel for bakers ovens in London and was a form of woodland management that passed into history with the advent of gas fired ovens. Cutting the limbs off at height prevented deer from eating the fresh soft re-growth in the spring, which is a problem when such native trees are "coppiced" or cut close to ground level. The term for the swelling where the limbs arise is the "pollard head" or "knuckle". The practice of pollarding hornbeam and other native trees has the effect of vastly increasing the age of trees compared to "maiden" or un-cut trees. When re-pollarding trees, the trunk should not be cut below the "pollard head" but some of the younger branches should be left cut short (50cm) like a stubby shaving brush to encourage re-growth. Trees that have not been pollarded for many years may be difficult to bring them back into a pollard regime without incurring losses. In towns it is common to see various species of lime trees (Tilia) managed by pollarding every few years to maintain them at a height and breadth compatible to their surroundings.
