    Video Series Description -
    Thanks for tuning in to this video series. My name is Chi Chen and throughout the next year, I will be providing weekly updates of my recovery process. The purpose of these videos is to provide a live case study on the surgical rehab process in Canada for someone who is looking to return to competitive sports.
    Summary -
    I ruptured my Achilles Tendon on June 3, 2020 and it took about 3 weeks to go through the hospital system, appointments, scheduling and I finally had my surgery June 26, 2020. I'll be talking about my recovery protocol and removing heel wedges in order to prepare yourself to remove the aircast boot.

    I was put in a boot a week after my injury. I'm non op. Doc wanted 1 lift removed a week. He also told me I could take it off at night and shower. I think maybe he's for surgical repair so he's rooting for a rerupture or for it not too heal. I've watched lots of webinars and advice from patients like you and I suggest for anyone really wanting to heal to do the same. There's still a lot of debate and controversy on this topic. Just a helpful tip 🙂

      Yeah rupturing it the second time was definitely a shock and a reality check. Make sure you don't do what I did. Do all the physio exercises for both your legs when you start PT. It'll help bulletproof the other one so that you don't risk injuring that one as well. Trust me!

    Thanks so much for documenting your journey, Chi!
    I am currently approaching week 9 now, and doing PT three times a week. And I have to say that your videos have been super helpful.
    I wanted to ask however; when you were at this point, were you having some difficulty stretching past the neutral point? I’m sure everyone’s process is alittle different, but I seem to have hit a wall in regards to going past neutral. It almost feels like my Achilles won’t stretch any further, and of course I don’t want to forcefully push through and cause injury.
    I currently have no lifts in my boot, and can say that my achilles has gotten pretty used to being in that neutral position. I guess I’m just worried that it could be more difficult to stretch past that point, because of course, in order to walk you need for the knee to be able to go over the toes (if that makes sense). Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

    • @ChiChen3
      @ChiChen3  Рік тому +1

      It'll naturally stretch past that point when you start walking without the boot. You'll have to consciously walk heel-toe pattern and not sideways like a duck and work on flexing your calves as you step off. This along with knee to wall stretches will help you move past neutral. Don't rush it and it'll all come naturally as you start walking again.

    Just 9 weeks post op. Went for my first aqua therapy session. Walked for the first time without the boot in the pool with no other support. I would recommend aqua therapy. I had a lot worries doing the exercises. I must say the facility here in Beijing is state of the art (and the fee is accordingly). Still with one wedge in the boot and only WB at 30% though but I consider this a big victory. Gait was pretty ok, tendon is still stiff and cramped up. I advise to do all the AROM exercises to loosen your foot and ankle. I hope to be in shoes in 3 to 4 weeks.

    Hey, brother. Awesome video. Helped me feel better during my recover. I am in Week 7 Post-Surgery and right on par with what you are talking about in regards to removing the heels. Quick Question, have you experienced pain/tingliness/weird feeling at the bottom back heel of the foot when you've tried pushing it down? Is that normal at all?

    • @ChiChen3
      @ChiChen3  Рік тому

      Yeah thats completely normal and part of your achilles trying to gain the range of motion and flexibility back. Just ease yourself into, it should feel uncomfortable but not painful. If you feel 6/10 pain level or higher, especially if theres any sharp pains, then ease up on it, let it rest and try it again later.

    When you experience the stretch as you take out a heel lift, did you feel a slight twinge or pull at the top of the heel? My first 2 wedges I didn’t get that much, but I’m on my last wedge and there is more noticeable *twinge* at my lower Achilles/upper heel. Not sure if I should go back a wedge for a few more days. Any advice? TIA!

    • @ChiChen3
      @ChiChen3  Рік тому +1

      Let the pain be your guide. If it feels like there's a noticeable twinge, then I'd say give yourself a few extra days to stretch. Go back a wedge but everyday give yourself a few opportunities to take that wedge out and stretch it a little to see if you can to the next wedge or no wedge without a twinge. Don't need to stay in that position for long or put weight on it as you would if you took the wedge out. But allow your body to get use to it and when you do finally take the wedge out, you shouldnt' get as much of a twinge or discomfort. Hopefully that makes sense.

    • @ChiChen3
      @ChiChen3  2 роки тому

      Totally normal, I had 4 wedges I believe. The boot is going to stretch your achilles for the first time since the cast kept it in a super pronated position. So now you'll start feeling it stretch in the boot as you remove heel wedges each week. The first couple of days are the most uncomfortable but then your achilles starts getting use to the stretch.

    I'm at week 4-5 right now and I already ditched my crutches around the house and I feel great. I actually went out to a ball game without them last night and I felt no pain at all, my body lets me know when I need the rest but like I said for the most part I feel great. I also don't wear my boot all day, what's your take on that

    My boot didn't have heels lifts in it. That's weird to me

      Yeah I've heard this a few times, I'm not as familiar with it because my foot definitely would not be able to stretch to neutral / 90 degrees right after I got out of the cast. I needed to slowly stretch it over the weeks.

    Hello, I'm at week six and have been partial weight bearing for about a week and will start working towards getting off crutches and out of boot by week 7.5. It was my right driving side. I just worry about aggregating it.
    Anyone have a similar schedule of progression?

      That's really good speed to get out of the boot by week 7.5. I'd recommend following a recovery protocol, I have a link to it in my first or second video to the one I'm using. Usually take out one heel wedge per week after you're at 100% weightbearing. You don't want to over stretch your achilles too song as it'll lose tension and power before its given time to heal.

      @@ChiChen3 We were very aggressive with PT about 10 days out and I've been very discipline with doing my prescribed exercises and icing. Your video on walking with boot was very helpful. I got the green light to ween off boot over the next couple of weeks and will exercise caution when transitioning. Once I start walking without boot I will expect to have some discomfort correct?
      Get up the great work!
