Like they were just programmers that got hired from some corporate job where they made accounting software or some shit. So they had no idea how a game should feel. I ran into this once with a guy I met who was trying to make a game engine of sorts for iOS games. He was trying to make something that any non-programmer could use to release an iOS game. It was actually decent. Except that he coded the button presses so that things don’t happen on “button press” but on “button release” and he did not fucking understand when I explained the difference. When you press A you want Mario to jump. You don’t want Mario to jump after you press and then release A. No matter how many times I explained it and even had him play Super Mario to demonstrate it, he did not get it. He was never a gamer, just a programmer who decided one day that maybe he should jump on the iOS video game bandwagon.
Swamp Thing has the same taken damage noise as Bart vs the Space Mutants, was driving me crazy thinking where I heard that noise from. EDIT: It has the exact same SFX for everything...
Based on the Swamp Thing ranking, there's going to be a big stack of Imagineering titles down near the bottom, from when they were churning out Bart Simpson vs X games.
Good to see Chip ´n Dale ranked that high, I loved that game as a kid and now I have scientific proof, that I had impeccable taste in video games. Emphasis in had.
The underwater bomb defusal is as far as I ever made it in TMNT as a kid. Navigating the electrified seaweed seemed impossible to my brain. The dread of it is the main thing I associate with that game. Somehow, I didn't even remember the absurdity of that ceiling hit jump.
I've got a weak spot for TMNT 1. My childhood best friend owned it and we played it all the time. Even the underwater section of the dam gets easy with a little practice, though you're basically saving Raph for that 'cause he can't do shit in any other situation. Until you get subweapons, anyway. Get Raph some boomerangs and you're golden. That said, the furthest we ever got as kids was stage 4 of I think 6? And we didn't get there often. Stage 3 was long and fairly complex, with some tough sections throughout. We didn't know anyone who actually beat it (with proof, of course. Several kids _claimed_ to have beaten it) and watching a full run of it these days it's easy to see why. There are a few good commentated runs here on YT if you'd like to see the best way to get through it. I can't hate TMNT 1. Nostalgia's a hell of a drug. And I was never good at beat-em-ups so I'm one of the rare people who prefer it to 2 and 3, even if they're objectively the superior entries on the NES. But yes, it was very much a 'keep Donatello alive' game. Leonardo could do in a pinch but they made Donnie so god damn strong that it didn't take long to realize he was gonna be your go-to turtle.
I know this doesn't matter and I'm probably 1 of only 3 or 4 losers in the world who know, remember, or care about it, but the clones of Dale and weird aliens in that level of Rescue Rangers were a reference to an episode where aliens (specifically the one in the game) cloned Dale. I think the rocket ship was also in the episode.
yes, so many interesting military sims on the Genesis. While I of course appreciate Top Gun, Flight of the Intruder and F-15 Strike Eagle, the Genesis has near PC quality ports of LHX Attack Chopper and 688 Attack Sub
Sky Kid is my jam, but that was the first time I ever saw Swamp Thing. Decided to go look up a speedrun of it, and boy, that's almost a completely different game than what we saw here. Swamp Thing can run like the wind if you know what you're doing. It doesn't make it look like a better game, mind you, but he sure can haul ass.
When he jumps, Dino Riki borrowed the "throwing the ball" SFX from Bases Loaded..... and the Rescue Rangers throwing and taking damage sound straight out of Atari 2600...
In Flight of the Intruder, the take-off and first-person view sections are in the F4 Phantom, while the surface-attack and landing sections are the A6 Intruder.
yeah, the game could be clearer on that (though the briefing does mention that the different aircraft have different missions). In the PC version you get 8 aircraft, four of each type and switch manually between them, so there's not that odd mid-mission forced switch. Of course, the PC version is quite different in almost every other regard as well, being a considerably more realistic flight sim where the F-4 lacks a machine gun and has unreliable missiles, and you have to identify targets before attacking them.

Boy oh boy, this was a group of games, huh. Like many, many others of TMNT-loving kids in the 80s, I played the game, but never got far in it. And you hit the nail on the head where it was like a punch in the gut to get that kind of game as a fan of the Ninja Turtles. That being said, there are speedruns here on YT of people beating the game just using Raphael, without using subweapons, and without dying. Psychopaths, I tells ya. Dino Riki's platforming segments can be frustrating for sure, but it's still a fun game! I beat it years ago. I can appreciate Flight of the Intruder's changes in perspective, but it still looks clunky as hell to play. Sky Kid looks super fun, as does Chip 'n Dale, but Swamp Thing...yeah. The thing that caught my attention almost immediately is it uses sound effects and similar animations from The Simpsons games and Home Alone 2, so not only is it a ghastly experience in its own right, it has to rip-off other bad games to boot! Onto Episode 27!
Donatello's bo in Turtles in Time etc was like the go to turtle, but he's also slower and doesn't do as much damage. Raph and Michelangelo are faster and hit harder but with less range. I always gravitated towards the latter two later on.
That TMNT game holds a special place in my mind. The only TMNT game I had was the side scrolling beat em up arcade port, so I only saw the other one when I went over to someone else's house. It had so much more going on and such great music, it seemed so cool to me. Thank god I never really got to play it.

Flight of the Intruder is strange, not sure why it changes planes on you without landing the first one, but the jet you take off in is an F-4 Phantom, the landing one is the titular Grumman made Intruder. The game is actually based on a PC game that was based on a novel that got turned into a movie around the time the NES port was coming out. Based on the Wikipedia article, the movie bombed (sorry for the pun) and was also poorly receive by critics.
I mean, I mostly get it, but also I played the hell out of the turtles and enjoyed it. The gap jumps were bad and the sudden difficulty ramp at the pre Technodrome level is pretty rough. I guess the children would say git gud.
The moment I heard the sound effects in Swamp Thing, I knew it was going to be shitty because it sounded exactly like the awful NES Simpsons games. Probably built on that same engine.
Of all the games on the NES that clearly has contempt for children, TMNT is pretty high up there. If you're 7 and stoked for the turtles, you're about to get an abject lesson on managed expectations.

Ughh… I have terrible memories of leaving my Nintendo on because TMNT didn’t have any progress saves- and the game was so terrible and frustrating that you couldn’t endure playing for more than 5 minutes.
It gives me no end of relief to hear Jeff giving it to the Turtles game. Ever since I was a kid I absolutely hated it but everyone else around me not only loved it, but were kind of experts at it. I just hated the way it played and felt.
The thing about the Dam level in TMNT is that if you stick to a turtle until he dies then start again with a new turtle 4 times, it's really hard. If you swap turtles when the one you are controlling is low on health, then you have 4 lifebars of health with no starting over, and some room to brute-force the hardest parts.
I feel like I need to go watch a Swamp Thing movie now. It’s been at least 35 years since I’ve seen one. Were there robot mice and were his arms really short but only when he punched things? Ok in reference to my other comment about non gamer programmers… yeah who the fuck makes sense super long scrolling fall to your death like that second part? Why would you do that?
i've only read Alan Moore's Swamp Thing (and only a little bit of that tbh). I assume it used to be different, because in those comics it seemed really unsuited to be turned into a platformer lol

There's also a video out here on the You-ter-webs (maybe the same one) that breaks down the code for the Dam level, and how the developers basically janked the shit out of the movement mechanics until they ended up with something kind of, but not totally, like swimming, and then said "that's probably as good as it's ever going to get."

I always had zero friction getting my fave Donatello, who no one wanted because he had a stick (boring) and was purple (gay color). Michelangelo came second for everyone as he was the most stoned
