When I bought my (extremely) rural property in 2015, one of the reasons I chose it was for the size and layout of the living quarters (a vintage double-wide mobile home). The master bedroom and bath are at one end and two small bedrooms and second bath are at the other. They open into a great room and kitchen area. This layout is perfect for a live-in caregiver or roommate, with ample private space and a common area big enough for mingling-without-crowding. I'm a devout loner and I love the isolation of this secluded valley -- have NO plans to rejoin civilization in my dotage, lol.
We downsized, moved into a one level townhouse a year ago, it comes with yard care, is energy efficient and very comfortable. We felt it was a good choice for us, easy to stay for the day there is only one of us. Tried to think ahead and have a good plan. I”m a 72-year old widow of 8 years. I live on my children’s property in a “granny’s quarters” at the back of their property. Although it’s great to be near family, they do work and have their lives created for themselves, so that I may not see them very often. I still must make attempts to join others my age, so as to not become isolated. I frequent classes and events at the local senior center, at my church, and also at other events around the city. Right now, I still drive so that I can get out and about easily. I can see myself slowing down, so I consider the next steps, such as at a Continuing Care facility, and I’ve begun looking around in the area. That way, I can still be relatively near my family, too.
Inspired by tiny houses, my sister and I are considering turning my condo unit into two micro or studio apartments with shared kitchen and bathroom. My unit has a foyer with all the rooms off the foyer and the current living room and bedroom have wall length closets.
Great Topic. My husband and I tried to get a tiny house on my son's land but the local government made so many hoops to jump through that we ended up buying a house. Now my husband has passed I will look at this option again. Thank you for the video.

I am currently in the process of selling the large property in a city that I inherited from my mother 3 years ago, when I had been living way back in the mountains near Yosemite. Now I have decided to purchase a small condo in the city, due to my age and dissabilities the city just seems to make more sense, but I never considered shared housing. I guess I am still independent at heart. This chat was so appropriate to me today, thank you for the daily talks.
Hello, former near-Yosemite dweller, from the Southern Sierra Nevadas! I'm sorry you had to leave our glorious mountains, but things do change as we age, don't they! As I commented above, I'm hoping to be able to hang in there on my land, about 20 miles south of Lake Isabella (as a neighbor says, "It's not in the middle of nowhere, but we can see it from here"). Time will tell. Meanwhile, I hope you're transition to city life is going well.

I got a tiny house but it's actually illegal to live in one in Nashville and found it hard to sell afterward. They consider it a "camper" since it's on a trailer.
I am looking forward to moving back to my childhood "neighborhood" in the SFBayArea. A chum from those days has agreed to take me in for a fee that fits my low-income budget. And so this is also my downsizing challenge!

I would love to see a group of women buy five acres and build a circle of tiny houses, sharing cost of a well, driveway, etc.
