    • @TheSteveKinney

      @@EirikHasselberg yeah - I think it’s a great mic with a ton of original character.
      A lot of top end saturation which sounds pretty cool.
      It’s not a u87, it’s not a clone of anything. Not meant to be.
      But what it is, is cool.
      Other mics that are sweet at that price range, some warm audio stuff, like the wa87, Mojave, telefunken tf11, Roswell audio.
      Hope this helps mate!

    I was supposed to get aston origin may be a year ago, but was a bit sceptical as I had not heard the name before so I got lewitt audio mic. But now, the way you are praising it, it seems quite a legit product. Yes, I would definitely love to see a video on how it performs with you current mic. A comparison video would be awesome.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  Рік тому +1

      Truly love it.
      I dig it a lot on singers that hit the mic hard. Rock singers, hip hop, etc.
      Sounds great as drum overheads.
      Killer on an acoustic guitar.
      I don’t like it on overly sibilant vocalists.
      For the money, I don’t think anything really beats it, especially not in the condenser arena.
      You could make an argument for a different type of mic, for a different purpose.
      But yeah - great thing, it’s own character, built like an absolute tank... not much more you could ask for in a mic.

    Hi Steve thanks for nice unboxing video. Have to say I am not an expert in music.I got both the Aston Spirit and Origin. But I can't decide. I feel this Spirit sounds (really) better to my voice. My voice is quite voice. Do you know if this Origin fits more to brighter voices(female) ? Because it gets so much good reviews, but I think it sounds very 'clinical' and not thrilling at all... What would you recommend? Or what mic you could recommend for deep male voice for voice over?
    Thanks :)

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 роки тому +1

      I haven't had a chance to use the Origin so I couldn't really say there - but I can say that you'd probably quite enjoy the Spirit, SM7B, or the Aston Stealth.
      I'd engage the low cut filters on both the preamp, and the mic and then speak right up close - which will likely balance out the proximity effect and make your voice sound really deep and huge once paired with good compression.
      Hope this helps!

    Hy! Glad i found your video! I'm starting to get deeper into music production and i'm looking for a good all around microphone for acoustic guitars and vocals. I have a limited budget and was looking into the wa47jr and the aston spirit. I like the idea of having a warmer/vintage-ish sound, since i have a bright dreadnought and a somewhat bright voice. Would you recommend the Spirit over the 47jr? Thank you!

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 роки тому +1

      Tough choice.
      The Aston is absolutely amazing. Really smooth top end. Not harsh at all, depending on how you eq.
      The wa-47jr is great. It’s not a tube condenser, like the vintage style 47 - but still does a fantastic job.
      I think either way you go here - you’d be happy.
      They have quite similar frequency response - however, the Aston is definitely brighter in the cardioid pattern.
      So if the goal is to keep the ess’s lower - you may be right in thinking the 47.
      Cheers!

      I think they are both fantastic mics. Truly.
      They both will go in the direction your looking to go - sonically speaking.
      I have enjoyed the Aston a lot. Hasn’t disappointed me yet. I like when it saturated a bit. Does a cool thing.
      I don’t have enough nuanced experience with the r2 to be able to pick up any specific quirks.

      @@TheSteveKinney cool thanks so much Steve! Do you find yourself using the Aston over the WA-47 for lead vocals or is it just situation dependent? 🎙

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  2 роки тому +2

      @@craigerwin4007 situation dependent for sure.
      I find that - I like the Aston for male singers that are powerful ... similar to like, old rock singers that can be loud.
      Sounds great with that stuff for sure.
      The 47 is always great on a female voice. Tons of harmonic content.
      47 has no pad on it - so if you overload at the front - it can get distorted.
      Sometimes - in the case of Motown sound - that was always cool... the more you know. 😎
      Where I think the 47 really shines is in a high quality vocal booth - where you can be off of it and not sound super far away.
      There is a sweet spot with it.
      The Aston is a work horse. You can literally be right on before it will crunch up. And with the 20db pad - it’s hard to overload the capsule.
      It sucks finding a mic - because it really is a trial and error thing.
      But that said. Again. Grasping at straws because - you can get a great tone out of any of them.. they are just flavor choices.
      Making tones is a lot like cooking... a little of this... a little of that - and you got something super vibey and cool.
      Another way to think about it...
      If you had a truck - you wouldn’t want to call it an Aston Martin and try to race cars... but a truck is badass in its own right. You can haul shit. Pull shit.
      The trouble I see with producers, and hell even myself when I get a new piece of gear - is trying to turn that piece into something it isn’t. That’s half the battle.
      The Aston is great.
      The 47 is great.
      The 87 is great.
      All awesome mics. Different flavors. Different ways of using that flavor.
      With those mics - there are very few moments where I’d say - no. Absolutely not that mic for that.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 роки тому +1

      @@pedroahets there technically is no such thing as a matched pair.
      What it really amounts to is that each mic was part of the same “batch”. So while they are as close as possible to being sonically “matched”... it’s not to say they are literally the exact same.
      Where this really came about was from before modern production techniques. Now days - the productions are so consistent that really - with most major manufacturers - there isn’t enough of a difference between the units because of this. Unless of course of a supplier change etc.
      Vintage mics - or handmade - this becomes important.
      Hopefully that makes sense.
