Should there have been a goalie interference call on Bennett's game-tying goal?

- The Panthers stormed back from a two-goal deficit to beat the Bruins Sunday to take a stranglehold in the series heading back to Florida, but it wasn't without controversy. TSN's Director of Scouting, Craig Button, joins SportsCentre to discuss Sam Bennett's game-tying goal that was challenged by the Bruins for goalie interference but ultimately wasn't overturned.

Craig is the worst....thats why no team hires him... hes a joke
"I don't think it did"
Must be nice to have a job on TV and be high out of your mind
I'm stunned. I never thought a "Button" could think.
I couldn’t care less who wins this series, but that’s an absolutely terrible no call. What exactly is this curly haired dude watching? Is he simply told to reinforce what Toronto says?
Same no dog in this fight but that was terrible
Nah, it’s the NHL telling him what to say. They’re pushing Florida as a team and it didn’t matter how good any team that plays Florida really is, they’re going to go to the finals no matter what.
Goal or no goal it doesn’t really matter. The burins were spent by the third period, Florida would’ve won that game regardless
@@theshawnkelly bro the Bruins are terrible, are you blind? 🤣
He had no chance of getting to that puck and was not trying to slide over. That matters in the call
IF A DEFENDING PLAYER HAS BEEN PUSHED, SHOVED, OR FOULED BY AN ATTACKING PLAYER SO AS TO CAUSE THE DEFENDING PLAYER TO COME INTO CONTACT WITH HIS OWN GOALKEEPER, SUCH CONTACT SHALL BE DEEMED CONTACT INITIATED BY THE ATTACKING PLAYER FOR PURPOSES OF THIS RULE, AND IF NECESSARY A PENALTY ASSESSED TO THE ATTACKING PLAYER AND IF A GOAL IS SCORED IT WOULD BE DISALLOWED.
It does not matter how hard it was the push
That is correct however, however however, it cannot be overturn on a replay. Sam Bennett cross, checked the Boston Bruins into his own goalie. The call was missed. You’re not allowed to call a penalty based on something that happened on the replay so there’s nothing at the NHL can do. Their hands were tied.
If somebody goes into their own goalie, it’s not interference. It would be another penalty like in this case it would be cross checking and other cases it would be an interference call, not a goalie interference. The penalty was not called on the ice therefore they had no choice, but to let the call Stand
This is wrong. If attacking player pushes shoves or fouls defending player into his own goalie it is viewed as attacking player initiating the contact. Here Coyle was already in the crease and would've been in Swaymans way even without the push and also Swayman was way out of position to make it back.
*The penalty was not called on the ice therefore they had no choice, but to let the call Stand*
You are correct that they can't call a penalty based on replay, but interference doesn't require a penalty having been called so the goal could still have been disallowed.
How was that not a penalty???!!!During the regular season that definitely gets called. It’s been such a great playoff year and then you get something like that. What a joke. 🤦♂️ 🤦♂️ 🤦♂️
You must be new to hockey, not everything that gets called in the regular season gets called in the playoffs. If it was called the same we'd be seeing like 8 powerplays per team each game. The intensity is higher, grow a set.
No, you must be new to hockey, blatant goalie interference plays like this one always get called in the playoffs too. Big hits, slashings and maybe some interference plays don’t get called as often in the playoffs, you’re right, but not obvious goaltender interference like this one.
A perfect example where the NHL is a joke with replay challenged calls… A waste of technology and common sense.
Once again, officiating is a joke.
Wasn't going to make the save anyway? Really. You know that? Clear goaltender Interference and the rule has no language in it about the pkayer was going to score anyway. Do better
Exactly. What a profoundly stupid take.
Fucking right? How many goals have we seen taken back because the goalie was lightly brushed but realistically had zero or practically zero impact on the actual play? Now all of a sudden we can deem a play isnt goalie interference because "he wouldnt have stopped it anyway"? At this point just change the rule to "goaltender interference occurs whenever Toronto feels like it"
Dear TSN, please no more Craig Button. He is the only guy on your channel that I will not watch anymore. There has to be so many people out there who can do his job and not sound so arrogant. I did enjoy watching Jay make him look like a fool in their Utah/Arizona debate though. Maybe more Jay and Craig debates then😂
So Tampa has two goals disallowed for interference against Florida but this counts, no consistency.
Tampa did interfere twice
@Tyekiller115 yes and Florida interfered once. But only one team had the rules enforced against them.
@@uppymcdowny58 lol that’s a joke
Nhl sent the message so that everyone’s going to be pushing defenders into their goalie
He interfered with the defenders ability to play the puck with a clear cross check with full extension.
The NHL has become a joke.
The push should be reviewable. Penalty no doubt
Are you high as a kite???? He try stopping a puck on your right side while a large man is laying on your right side of your body???
Bruins shouldn’t be in this series and I’m a Boston fan. Bruins have a Smurf of a GM!!!!!! We have no depth, no centers, no wingers, overpaid and overrated defensive players but this was clearly interference!!!!
I hope they go back and look at all the goalie interference calls over the last 5-10 years and see what’s going on. Refs should not make things harder on a weak team
The sad thing is, the official was 10 feet away and didnt see that? Thats a horrible no call by a on ice official. Then to make things worse, the reviewing booth in toronto got it wrong. The NHL has a real problem with officials and the League has got to do a better job.on who they hire.
Bennett would Score that goal regardless????!!! He had the puck on his stick with no one around him because he cross checked coyle into the goalie. Is this guy insane!
Hmm defender in the crease on his own. Attacker hardly cross-check him or push him in the back. The push wasn't so hard otherwise the attacker would have gone backwards or forwards if he used a lot of force. Defender was out of position on his own. He should have push the attacker away from the crease and not been in the crease with his back turned.
@@dolphins2170huh? I don’t even know how to respond to this ridiculous defense of what happened. Just watch the play my man. if Bennett doesn’t push coyle into the goalie then coyle is there to disrupt the play and swayman wasn’t given the opportunity to even get over there. I agree in general the push wasn’t that bad and if Swayman isn’t there coil probably doesn’t fall but again he was there and that is why it was interference , but you can’t do something like that to get an advantage and then score a goal. That is literally why it is a penalty.
@@JJG85 Defense job to keep the crease clear for the goalie to have free movement. The defender f-ed up he should have played his man and drove him from the top of the crease and tied up his stick or raise off the ice in order to keep him from getting a shot off Hockey 101. Basics
@@dolphins2170I get it you are disappointed that coyle didn’t do what you think he should have. Doesn’t change what Bennett did. That’s like saying a goal should count that was batted in with a clear high stick because the defender wasn’t playing good enough defense.
@@JJG85 like I said it was barely a push or cross-check the defense men was already in the crease next to the goalie the attacker stayed out of the crease. Good Goal no matter how you feel about it. Boston should be playing neutral zone trap or a left wing lock type of defense.
It was absolutley a missed interference penalty that gave the offensive player a competitive advantage
The stupidity of these comments shows why Button doesn't have an NHL job. Blatant crosscheck and interference. Panthers have been the better team in game 2 and 3 but the level of officiating has been terrible
Agree the panthers forechecking has been great , they definitely have outplayed the bruins.but this goal definitely should have not counted.and on top of it florida should have been called for a 2 minute cross checking penalty.
‘Did a 200 pound man falling on you impede your ability to stop the puck’
Button: I don’t think so
Reason: Gary Bettman wants the Panthers to advance against the Rangers.
Unless Bennett does not push Coyle into Swayman, I don't see how it's not goaltender interference.. Why bother having the rule then? Every team should now insert this push play in their playbook. BRUTAL non-call that decides this game!
Useless Sam? And Squirrel Cheeks/MvAvoy the dirtiest scumbag player on the Bruins.....he has always been a P.O. S. and lives in the sin bin. Sam at least SCORES and has talent.
I’m a Redwings fan, no skin in this game. There is a reason why they have prohibited the tune Three Blind Mice from being played. Brutal call from “Toronto”
So you say that was not interference and the call for interference was upheld in Dallas vs Colorado? Outside the blue paint.
Why Craig Button is on TV, and not in an NHL job...anywhere. Just. Plain. Wrong. See 69.7 in the book.
If the ref calls interference or cross check on Bennet, no goal because of the penalty, the whole situation is averted and you don't even need replay. All the replay did is magnify the missed call.
Craig’s description is not the rule. His explanation was as bad as all of his predictions. There’s a reason he’s still working on TV.
> "The essence of it is: was Swayman impeded? [...] I don't think it prevented him. Sam Bennet was going to score that goal regardless."
The fact of impedance has NOTHING to do with the likelihood of the goal being scored. It's not impedance if it "probably" would have went in anyway? Where is that rule? You're an analyst, Craig?
I am a Penguins Fan and i am glad Boston lost as Boston Bruins have taken more cheap shots than i can count over the years. Regardless this goal shouldn't have been allowed and fact it is being defended is ridiculous!
I used this play all the time on NHL 94 on Sega Genesis
Totally disagree. That impeded the goalie. He wasn’t able to come over save the goal.
This is why I don’t watch the playoffs. It’s all decided by dumb refs.
It’s sad that they did a coach’s challenge and nobody in Toronto used their brain. Not only missed initially, but missed by a team of idiots with a clear view of the entire sequence
Also everyone saying it’s a light shove so it doesn’t matter is just not paying attention.
Coyle is in the middle of stopping and this most of his body is leaning back towards Bennett so when Bennett delivers the cross check/shove coyle 1) can’t see it coming to brace for it
2) it goes against coyles momentum
Wasn't a crosscheck dude. In the hockey world it was a love tap. I played for years, you obviously didn't.
@@thebiffer100if its not a crosscheck then why were the Bruins on the penalty kill during this goal for the exact same level of "love tap"? You cant have it both ways
I hate the rule book so much
I think this is how it’s looked at
Would swayman be able to make the save with Bennett having a wide open shot? Probably not so good goal
But it doesn’t take into account that if coyle wasn’t on top of swayman then coyle would be in the lane of Bennett’s wide open shot which would then change the idea of would swayman be able to get over and make the save
Craig makes the point every Bruins fan is ignoring. Even if Coyle isn’t even there….its gonna be a WIDE OPEN net that Swayman is more than likely gonna have 0% chance of getting back on. He’d have to make the BOBROVSKY SAVE with almost a half-second less time to do it. That puck was going in either way
Second…even with the two non-calls on Bennett…any educated hockey fan can see the Panthers are simply better. So this is coming off as fan whining.
@1479thegame so you're saying with 100% certainty that Bennett is still going to score if Swayman can use his stick? Which he can't if you look here 0:59. Is this the reason the Bruins lost no, but don't tell me it's a forgone conclusion the Panthers are the better team. The Panthers had an 0-2-2 record against the Bruins this year and only beat them for the division by 1 point. Please present evidence that the Panthers are head and shoulders better than Boston. Buy hey what do I know I'm just an uneducated whiney Bruins fan who is showing evidence of my argument. As opposed to just saying "more than likely gonna have 0% chance." Also if the hit on Marchand is called correctly Bennett is suspended for at least game 4 since he is a repeat offender, so that means he has 0% chance to score the goal.
@@PatrickBailey525 I guess my response would be to flip the question back around on you. With all of this outrage over that particular call… it would seem that Boston fans seem pretty dead-set that Swayman 100% WOULD have made that save without the interference. And THAT to me is just Boston fan shit. While I can’t say he for sure 100% wouldn’t make the save. I can say it’s more likely that he wouldn’t… than he would.
As far as the better team? I would say a few things. Regular season doesn’t mean shit. Whether it be injuries or just portions of the schedule where teams are trying to just simply get by. It doesn’t mean anything,
Florida would pound Tampa 3-1 or 4-0 in the regular season and then get HOUSED by the Lightning in the playoffs. It’s a completely different game.
I say we are better because Boston was a much better team last year. And we won that series. And aside from all of the noise fans are making about the calls in this series we are out shooting Boston and out playing Boston.
We are suffocating Boston through the neutral zone and your team can barely even get any shots off. Which is what this team does to everyone. So…Unless that changes… my point remains the same.
@1479thegame Where in the rule does it allow for "more than likely that he wouldn't"? Please tell me by the letter of the rule that it wasn't interference? Via Rule 69.1, the NHL rulebook states that "if a defending player had been pushed, shoved or fouled by an attacking player so as to cause the defending player to come into contact with his own goalie, such contact shall be deemed contact initiated by the attacking player. If necessary, a penalty is assessed to the attacking player. If a goal is scored, it would be disallowed." Seems pretty black and white to me. Did Coyle make contact with the goalie? Was he pushed, shoved, or fouled by an attacking player? Note that there is no mention of force, just that he was shoved. Answer those questions for me and say it should still be a good goal.
Now, people are noticing how dirty the game is. Too bad Boston just realized that. 😆
WRONG CONCLUSION if you start with " no way that Sam Bennet WAS'NT scoring this goal" - what totally flawed logic!....By ANY standard of impeding the goaltender from making a save...how do you see this and say, "nah, the goaltender wasn't interfered with?? His ability to cross his crease was physically blocked by his own player being pushed into him PRIOR to the puck going in, case closed. Alternate facts/ realities goin on. Don't justify a missed call just because other bad missed calls also occurred. And this one changed the outcome of a game.
Read the rule book bro. You can sit here and say that Swaymans ability to attempt a save was not altered because of what bennett did. This is laughable who tf is this guy
This call is a stain on the NHL
Good job walking the fence line Craig
If the goal was gonna be scored anyway, why push a defender into the goalie? Shouldn't be necessary unless you needed swayman taken out to score. Bs call.
I agree with the call. The biggest problem for the Bruins getting this called interference is that Coyle was already impeding his goalie before the push. Why was he even straddling him to begin with? Yes, the push effectively knocked Coyle over, but he's already standing OVER his goalie with his goalies right leg in between his legs and nowhere to go to stop that goal. Also, Coyle glided a few feet before falling over. Coyle could've been trying to sell that call too.
100% agree
Coyle was in the crease. That should have been interference.
How the f**k could the goalie try to make a save with a player lying on him. Could he make the save if his team mate wasn’t there? Maybe, maybe not, but I’ve seen more impossible saves made. Not for the refs to say if it was possible. Button afraid to criticize refs.
I have ZERO dog in this fight... That was a terrible call!!! The goaltender had no chance to move to his right with Charlie Coyle in his lap!!! Had Coyle not been there, Swayman(??) would have had the chance to move to his right, and maybe make a save... The NHL blew this call, not once, but twice!!! Bad job by you NHL!
The series is Rigged , the panthers have the refs in their pockets. Garbage officiating
Really? Is that why yall were up 6 players to 4 with 30 seconds and yall still couldn't score? Get a life bro. Nothing is rigged so take off your tin foil hat
We need a clearer interpretation of a lot of rules this is getting ridiculous. Anyone go watch Willy nylander interference vs the Jets from a couple months ago
This was a bad call. No goal allowed. In plain English. Full stop…
how much they paying for u to say this 😭😭
Bs! The shot was blocker high, coyle hit swaymans blocker when he was shoved
It was a cross check, from behind, what is this “push” spin I hear all these “analysts” spewing? Ok suppose it was a push, it was from BEHIND, on a player without the puck. Panthers are better, Bruins have been bad, but this should never been a good goal. Get out
What a friggin joke! Honestly the NHL is the most illegitimate sport of all pro sports due to crap like this! Doesn’t matter if he would have scored or not. Penalty either way!
Hate both of these teams but that should not have been a goal
Swayman was 100% impeded. If you aren’t certain bennet would score, then there should be no goal.
He wouldn’t have made the save regardless
@@Echo227 if you are saying that with 100% certainty, then you need to watch more hockey
@@chrisharmata1797 well if you actually heard what the guy said you would actually understand btw he said that Swayman wasn’t going to make the save anyway

Definitely goaltender interference.
Craig button, notorious bruin hater
I hate the bruins. This was a terrible call.
This dude is smoking some good shit, He's delusional "I don't think it impeded Swayman" 🤣He's blind, that was an obvious penalty and no goal....NHL is fixing games, even after replay they was blind as fuck😮
Coyle embellished and acted like he was shot with a cannon.
Thank you
👌
I think youre confusing Coyle for a Panthers player
There is NO QUESTION that Coyle's big body, lying on top of Swayman because of Bennett's push, prevented Swayman from moving to his right and making a save ...NO QUESTION!!! WHAT A BOGUS CALL, OR NON CALL!!!!!😡😡
This should not have been a goal
Bullshit
good goal, no issues with it.
Craig Button is the most unlistenable guy in all of sports talk my God can someone please alleviate us from having to listen to this to this dwebe. It was an interference call it should have been called the goal should not have been allowed end of story just stop with your nonsense
The rule book says that’s a penalty. Referees don’t call the rule book. That’s the problem.
Best interpretation of the call outta 5 nhl talks another one pointed it out aswell
Swayman coulda got his stick across instead it was crushed against his leg underneath the defence man…. Ya missed this one Craig. Party line?
Goal was good. It's playoff hockey...Coyle iweights 218 pounds
..
is this guy kidding me? He was impeded and could have made the save so easy to see.
Only if he was a magician. Sorry for your precious Bruins.
@@thebiffer100 BALDERDASH. The Right Goalie shinpad was a mere 3 inches

Coyle was going to impede Swayman regardless of the push. The puck was already behind coyle. Swayman wasn't getting to the puck. Good goal!
This clown is in the wrong line of work. He’s a natural politician.
Craig Button doesn't know what he is talking about. Florida Panthers are getting help from the officials and it's destroying the playoffs. Florida can't beat the Boston Bruins man to man and they are proving it. Florida Panthers are a disgrace to the league. I haven't watch another game because of the disgusting officials destroying the game of hockey. I'm embarrassed to have the NHL Network and now I'm trying to get rid of it.
False
What is the big deal. If disallowed, does Barkov tie the game still and who wins? I think the panthers being Bruin’s had two shots on goal in the third period. Is it a missed call yes but to harp on it is wild. Panthers are the far better team and don’t see anyway how the Bruins could knock the Panthers out.
Cry Bruins fans cry😊
