Yeah. Like would coming out to someone and them be perfectly supportive be nice? Ya it would! But its 2021 and most people still dont have that. None of my friends were necessarily mean or rude when i came out to them but they definitely responded similarly to buffy in the sense that they werent expecting it and were confused. One of them had some questions lol but they were all okay with it. Buffys reaction is very realistic of someone who is neither a massive ally or a raging phobe.

@@trollingmermaids Exactly. She's someone put in a situation she never expected to be put in and so it's messy, confusing but at the end of the day well intended.

I'll never forget this scene. I was a kid then and it shocked me a lot to see how normal it was how it happened to a character I already knew. Not stereotyped at all. Buffy was just as surprised as we all were. It was like super natural, super real. And I remember how it changed the image I had about gay people (like if they were "different" or "weird" or whatever...). It was Willow, Buffy's best friend, a character full of personality... only that now she was feeling this, which didn't change her other qualities at all...
Years later, when I was 19, one of my two best friends came out to me (she had a relationship with a girl which didn't tell us about for a long time). I was shocked at the beginning, but then occurred the same: She was still the person I knew, with all her characteristics. There was only one thing about her that I didn't knew and now I did. It didn't change anything... Only that now she could be honest and speak frankly about her feelings as we, the other 2 girls, used to do with the boys we were with or we liked...
I think this scene had a lot to do with the way I started opening my mind those years...

I remember as a kid not understanding the coming out scene, I thought they were just surprised because they hadn't seen the chemistry, and hasn't realised that gayness was an important factor here. I'd just accepted Willow and Tara because their story felt very natural and I didn't even question it. Then I realised the oppression gay people face, and now these scenes hit correctly. I'm glad they did this. I'm glad Joss Whedon fought for their relationship.

100% agree. I really hated all the “I’m gay now” remarks/jokes we get season 4 and onwards because that’s not at all how sexual orientation works. Like it would have been fine if they wanted Willow to be in denial about being gay in the earlier seasons, but we would have needed to see that progression on screen and had a conversation about how she feels stronger for Tara than she did for Oz/Xander, because it really made it seem like they just flipped a switch in Willow and pretended like she hadn’t solely been interested in men for 3-4 seasons.

It’s probably because since being straight is considered the “default” sexuality, most gay people mistake their feelings towards other people to be romantic. Willow and Xander are childhood best friends, and they had a pretty close relationship so you can see how that could happen. when they realize that they’re gay, they fully go that rout. Hope that makes sense.

@@nikaxaiauri5169 yeah but that wouldn’t explain her relationship with Oz. I’m not saying it’s not possible for Willow to have been in denial, I just don’t think the writers executed that properly. They made it seem like because she’s dating Tara, she’s automatically gay, which isn’t necessarily true, esp considering her previous relationships with Xander and Oz.

    • @Cassandra765

It irked me as well (and I've personally always considered her either bisexual or pansexual), but I also understand why they did it this way. Being gay was already a hard enough thing for people to accept (and it still is to this day), I don't think the writers were prepared/informed enough to go down the bisexual or pansexual route. I think it was just easier for them to label her as gay. I think if this storyline had had more planning behind it, then they would've changed the way they wrote her relationships with Xander and Oz and this would've made more sense.

I love how the show handled Willow falling for Tara. There was no big panic scene, no moment of Willow running off to "figure things out". She accepted it completely. She fell in love with a woman and didn't blink. Everyone else seemed more shocked about it than Willow was. Tara was her soul mate. Simple as that. Such a revolutionary show.

What will do for the 3rd, bring Tom Cruise? Seriously, get a grip. These animals are not a threat. Why did you use freeze laser to freeze my cat's womb sacs.

As a queer woman growing up in the 2000s, I can't tell you how much the character of Willow means to me. I think people forget what this time was like for people in the LGBTQ+ community in this time; we were more widely accepted than we were in decades prior, but not taken quite as seriously. Queer men were played up as the butt of the joke while queer women were hypersexualized. Willow was the first out lesbian character I saw on TV who WASN'T defined by her sexuality and that was so refreshing for me, as a questioning 13-year-old.

Scream Queen 👑 However This episode I like, A lot actually. Because when Evan told me that he was gay (well he's Bisexual actually) My friends were very supportive because they actually cared about us. That's what I think we should have more on television 📺 Because I don't think that everyone understands that yet, So I think more shows should do things like this. By the way, I know what this month is. Happy Gay Pride guys

I was 14 when I saw this, and I was absolutely obsessed with the show. Willow was already my favorite character, and I was still in the closet. It secretly meant a lot to me at the time and I looked up to Willow so much more for being so brave when I was still so scared.
I told my mom first over the phone long distance, and her reaction was similar to Buffy’s:
“Mom I have to talk to you about something (a guy) but I have to tell you something else first..”
    “What, you’re gay?”
    “…..yeah…..”
    “I don’t care, I still love you”
And then my dad lol I was at dinner with him and my stepmom and my dad got all awkward and said “Boy I have to ask you something and I just want you to be honest cuz it won’t change anything… are you gay?”
“…..yeah….” And then there was the support and hugs and all love.
I got really lucky having them as my parents.
