This was the best explanation and demonstration of the Salsa "on 2" that I have seen on UA-cam. The Tumbao beat that you were playing with your mouths helped so much too. Made everything crystal clear. Thanks for a great demo.
I've recently started to learn salsa dancing and I'm learning on2 but with numbers. But this tumbao explanation made it much easier to avoid the jerky stop/move movements that can happen counting numbers. Thank you for sharing.
M Morales thank you for your comment! You can learn both ways, counting and with the sound of the tumbao just keep training your ear, it's the most important part since you are dancing to the sounds of the tumbao when you practice this way. Try to practice when you are social dancing. We have more videos with tips hope those help you as well to help you to learn on2. Salsaludos. Joel
Back to basics! This makes sense in the context of the music or in the context of songs that call "you" to dance this way. If you are lucky enough to dance with sometone who gets it then great.
onBeat thank you for your comment, in part this is our goal, that we help people to dance more to the music than the numbers, dancing with Feeling is the best way to express on the dance floor. Let's Dance With Feeling! Thank you!Joel
+pickleMTV Thank you! Please watch our last video it's an invitation to join 2 Live Salsa Classes Online on Sat, Jan 30th 2016 or find us at MySalsaOnline, we will have great information for you!
Muy bien! Pueden bajar los demás vídeos que nos confunden. The ' Pause' in the middle with the TumTum indicates a smoother tranfer of weight and allows the time to initiate a lot of other moves. Thus, the dance would not look like a '100 meters' sprint! I've also noticed that when they teach 1,2,3; 5,6,7 there isn't a real pause. Rather, it's just a 6-count redistributed in the space(time) of 8 beats!
muy bueno la música y el baile no solo mueve los sentido sino que realiza grandes bibramientos emocionales que es capas de transformare en el hilo conducto de los grandes sensazione
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I've been learning salsa/mambo for a few years and have been trying my best to explain dancing to the tumbao to some friends. i will show them this video. please keep sharing the knowledge and love of salsa/mambo!
+CoffeeMakerFilms Hello thank you for your comment, happy to hear that you like our video. Hope to see you in our Live Classes on Jan 30th 2016 - you can reserve your space at MySalsaOnline we will keeping sharing the love of Salsa/Mambo =)
Great explanation. I like the fact that you will be on the center on 4&5 but so it means that you'll reach the the center on the first of the two tum-tum of the conga. What about reaching the center on the second tum-tum of the conga. How do you find this version compared to the other one? Thank you
Hi, just curious. Why does the male start with right foot back on 2 . Most videos I have seen start with the male stepping left foot forward on 2. Thanks
I love this explanation but without the music playing I can’t quite tell whether this is Eddie Torres Mambo Tipico 2 or Palladium 2. I’m thinking its more palladium than Torres. Both break on 2 but Torres style goes break (2) step (3) override (4) step (5) break (6) and in palladium style it goes break (2) step (3) step (4) pause (5) break (6). However watching how they start seems to say it’s more Torres style as they don’t start with the break. They start pre break on the cun cun. In the end it’s just a minor detail.
Isn't it the "Palladium" style? Around Europe I see dancers traveling on 4 and stepping on 1 or & (123 567 or &23 &67). The video is stepping on 4 instead (234 678).
I'm in México City. I'm trying to learn salsa On1. Would it be sensible if I dance like this to the Congo?: Slap - on 1 2, Tum-tum - 3, 4 & Slap - on 5 6 Tum-tum - 7, 8& The slap sound would be my move on beat 1, 5. The tum-tum, I'd be at 3, 4 &; 7, 8 &
thanks for the video! In my opinion it's better say that on1 we dance in quick quick slow, on2 we dance quick quick quick! this is that says Eddie Torres!
Joel
Hello Guys! thank you for your videos, I´m also subscribed to your online lessons I really like your classes :). I have a question, I understand that the way you teach is also called the power2 when you step on "234 678". Why then for the shine you use the count 123 567 instead of keep counting "234 568". Thank you!
Hello! Good question! We really don't step the "power 2" since we step on the "8 and 1" first. We do follow the break step on the slap of the conga also which is similar to the power 2. But when we do shines, depending on the shine, its just easier to count with numbers since we don't always land on the "cun-cun", it is sometimes in the air and we would land on the 2 or the 3 or kick on the 8. It varies. I hope that helps and makes sense!
Justin Gayle thank you for your comment, yes we will make some videos on1 as well since more people like you are learning on1 and it can be musical as well. For on1 Dancers we will follow the cowbell, piano, etc... Please stay tuned for more videos. Thank you. Joel
@@V21IC , I thought the Tum-Tum is only on the 4& and the 8& (with the "&" being the halve measure), not on the 4&5 and 8&1. I do agree with the slap being on the 2 and 6 though.
Thank you for your comment! We also can dance landing on 1&5 as well, I will do that if I was dancing a Charanga that hits more on those beats (1&5). But for me if the accent is on the conga, I will step on those sounds. It's about the musicality and the freedom of dancing to the sounds of the instruments. Just preference!
+Myrecks Hodge Thank you for your comment, it's a process to train the ear and be able to listen and separate every instrument on each song. To start please try music from Tromboranga, they have good salsa music that is so clear to listen the tumbao Don't give up, like I said is a process and takes time, but with practice you will be able to do it!
Hodge, you are not the only person with the same problem, Salsa is very complicated/syncopated music; it takes a lot of time and listening. I teach ballroom dancing and the Classic Mambo movement is hard to teach to break ON 2. The Above explanation was very "Good". I am always looking for pointers to make my instruction easier.
making traditional count look ugly on purpose is like telling the creator of the on2 Eddie Torres is a crazy guy, I can't see the real difference if you don't dance properly on2 with counting, as of 2019 nobody dance on tumbao so all your's students now are learning to dance with the count, what a joke.
This was the best explanation and demonstration of the Salsa "on 2" that I have seen on UA-cam. The Tumbao beat that you were playing with your mouths helped so much too. Made everything crystal clear. Thanks for a great demo.
Wow! Thanks guys..... Clear, concise, compelling and all with great humility... Marvellous!
Finally an explanation that tells how it really works! Thanks guys! From now on this is my go-to video for teaching beginners.
Dan Aldridge thank you for your comment! We are happy that you are going to teach like this your beginner classes. Salsaludos from NYC
I'm still confused. I need to see it with music
I grew up hearing and feeling the beat not counting, so I really appreciate this type of explanation. Thank you guys! ♡ :)

@Zev Draven no problem :)
Thank you Joel, I just subscribed, thanks for the help.
Good Job..all done👍

No. I thought it was for On2, it's Slow, Quick-Quick, SLOW, Quick-Quick.
On1, it's quick-quick-quick & quick-quick-quick!
My experience

Is this not the power 2 style? When I hear On 2 New York style, I think ET2
ET dances on the tumbao too
+Bernard Morrison You are correct, Bernard. ET2 starts on the second open tone. So: ku KU, PA
Eddie Master is dancing on count 123 567, breaking on2 and 6. While contratiempo using 234 678

Well, the steps are the same as salsa on1 just the counting is different.
Leads step back on 2 with right foot
or Leads step 2 forward with left?
Ciro Vi leads step back with right foot on 2. Step forward with left foot on 6.
