If you know the books then the end of the film is a key event. It is the nexus point that decides the possible future selected. If Paul dies then the future is lost, if he survives all of human kind is affected. It is the first example in the story of his visions relating to his person future, were he has to pick the one history to take place, i.e. get killed by Jamis, become friends with Jamis or kill Jamis. The decision made with the help of the "other memories" voice means he fulfills his vision of Chani from the beginning of the film. So the ending confirms the beginning. I hope that helps.

A beautiful interpretation of the novel. The scenes sacrificed gave room to a deep world full of nuance, detail and intensity. A profound visual and auditory experience on iMax.

The pacing was how the book was written. Although the book/movie is sci-fi, it's not the typical run-out-the-mill sci-fi. It's more philosophical and requires the audience/reader to think on a deeper level.
So the movie was perfect. Even with that ending, it fits perfectly with the book that's divided into three parts, not two.
To be honest, the movie is intended more for fans of the book.
