Luke Combs covered Fast Car, which earned Tracy Chapman the songwriting credit for #1 Country Song this past year. Beyoncé’s country album was released later. I recommend watching Tracy and Luke sing this as a duet at the Grammy’s. I just looked up which female won Best Video of the Year, and it was Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up.”
More Tracy Chapman, please! “Talkin’ bout a Revolution,” “ Give Me One Reason,” “Baby Can I Hold You,” and “The Promise” are all great songs.

no no towards the end of the song, what she's saying is that her boyfriend doesn't have a job still and goes out drinking every night and she doesn't want to deal with it anymore so she says just take your fast car and keep on driving.

She wasn't turning into her father, she was turning into her mother living with an alcoholic, paying all the bills and taking care of the kids. So she told him to get into his fast car and drive away. She didn't want to end up taking care of another non-working alcoholic. It's a sad song. I love Tracy Chapman.

Yes, it's heartbreaking lyrics which mix the hopefulness of carefree riding in a car with a romantic partner escaping from the problems of her life and being pulled down by the reality that she's being trapped in poverty. First she can't finish her education by having to take care of her father, then she's with someone who's not contributing financially to her new family with children.

Good that you are broadening you musical horizon and you couldn't have done it with a better song. You also did a good job trying to understand its meaning while appreciating the instrumentation and the technicalities of the photography. Thanks for sharing

That's how I always interpreted it. It's a more modern version of "In The Ghetto" by Elvis-- The story of an endless, inescapable cycle of life and death. Poignant and moving every time I hear it.

Saw her in concert in 1996. Best concert I’ve ever seen - just her with her guitar on the stage. She was breathtaking. My favorite song of hers is The Promise.

I've loved this song for many years. Last year I was at the dentist and the Luke Combs version came on the radio station they were playing in the exam room. I was appalled. A white, male country music singer is doing a song that to me is about the life of a black, urban woman? When I got home I looked it up. It turned out that this was one of Combs favorite songs and he couldn't resist doing a cover. And he seemed very respectful. Chapman was OK with it and it earned her a ton of royalties and a song-writing Grammy, plus caused a revival of interest in her music. Combs and Chapman sang it as a duet on the Grammy broadcast.

There is all kinds of folk music, it's cultural depending on the ethnicity & country of origin. For example most of the influences for country music comes from the Scot's Irish musical heritage brought to Appalachia by immigrants. Of course there are different styles of country music as well , some influenced by the blues as well Celtic music. Then there's African folk music, Greek , Polish... the list goes on

You should read the lyrics, cuz you got the story a bit wrong. She’s saying SHE has a job, then she’s paying all the bills, then says her partner spends more time out drinking than they do w/their kids. SHE’s not repeating her Dad’s cycle. Her partner is.
I recommend “Talkin’ Bout a Revolution” “The Promise” is one of the most beautiful love songs ever imo.
Tracy Chapman’s albums are something you can listen to from start to finish. No bad songs, really. She’s incredible. Been one of my favorites since high school.

She's not becoming her father, the person she left with and tried to build a life with is the one in the bottle. He sees more of his friends than he does his kids. But she doesn't have anymore big plans and--unlike her mother, who abandoned her when she left the father--she tells him to take his fast car and go. She stays with her kids and does what she has to, as she's always done.

When this came out, there was so much racism/sexism directed at her appearance - and in all of the reaction videos I've seen to her in the last year or two I haven't heard anyone say similar. It's all be complimentary about not only her appearance but her voice too, and I'm glad to see it.

In MEMORIUM...?!?? YIKES. LOL. Tracy is very much Alive. Probably more than most of us. She has that Humble & Happy Spirit. I was Grinning ear to ear when she appeared strumming her Guitar. Listen to the Audience Reaction when they realize it is Tracy... Even Jaded and sometimes Marginally Talented Entertainers know Greatness when they see/hear it. A Perfect Song. a Song with actual Meaning... Tracy is a Tri-Athlete if you ask Me... Singer/Songwriter/ Musician.

This is one of those songs where you don’t presume that that “I” is the same as the songwriter. She’s singing a story. Tracy Chapman was raised by a single mother in a community of people who were struggling and she said that this was an attempt to capture “the world as I saw it when I was growing up in Cleveland, Ohio.”
